Driverkit driver hangs on macOS
Hello, I have crated a DriverKit driver for macOS and iPad M-series if I ever get the mac driver working. I have the correct entittlements, and matching provisioning profile downloaded manually. The driver loads (no errors!), and is visible in ioreg below the usb device (when plugged). The issue is that I never get any log from the driver, have reduced to minimal working code (below). When I debug with lldb, I load the symbols for my driver and break on init and Start - but lldb never triggers == never calls start or init. This is also why no logs. When I unplug the device, the driver process (ps aux) keeps running, causes a hard crash of the Mac with dext remove/or kill driver.dext process. I have asked Claude - but its just running in circles: check Info.plist=ok, check entitlements=ok, check code (minimal)=ok, check iig=ok, check provisioning profile=ok, check build settings=ok, check ioreg=ok, check code signature=ok, start over I don't get any log from my driver, which is consistent with init() not being called. All logs from kernel & friends (AMFI) do show the driver loading - no errors. Any tips appreciated! // USBDriver.iig #ifndef USBDriver_h #define USBDriver_h #include <USBDriverKit/IOUSBHostInterface.iig> class USBDriver: public IOService { public: virtual bool init() override; virtual void free() override; virtual kern_return_t Start(IOService * provider) override; virtual kern_return_t Stop(IOService * provider) override; }; // USBDriver.cpp #include <os/log.h> #include <DriverKit/DriverKit.h> #include "USBDriver.h" bool USBDriver::init() { if (!super::init()) return false; os_log(OS_LOG_DEFAULT, "terminal.driver: init()"); return true; } kern_return_t IMPL(USBDriver, Start) { os_log(OS_LOG_DEFAULT, "terminal.driver: Start()"); kern_return_t ret = super::Start(provider); if (ret != kIOReturnSuccess) { os_log(OS_LOG_DEFAULT, "terminal.driver: super::Start failed: 0x%08x", ret); return ret; } os_log(OS_LOG_DEFAULT, "terminal.driver: Start() success"); return super::Start(provider); } kern_return_t IMPL(USBDriver, Stop) { os_log(OS_LOG_DEFAULT, "terminal.driver: Stop()"); return super::Stop(provider); } void USBDriver::free() { os_log(OS_LOG_DEFAULT, "terminal.driver: free()"); super::free(); }

Approval of first in-App purchase
I am looking for some insight and an assist (planning to test in-app purchase with TestFlight) - all works in Xcode. I have created my very first in-App purchases App (I have other paid apps in App store) Under Distribution tab in the Monetization section i created the in-app purchases item. I completed all fields and the status is now changed from waiting fior metadata to ready to submit.. Per my readings the in-app purchase item would be reviewed with a new version of the App. I uploaded a new version, added sandbox tester and submitted it for review.. My App in TestFlight now shows status of Testing, but the in-App purchase still shows waiting for review. On the Distribution tab the "Add for Review" button is active but it seems a bit illogical for me to click it as the in-App purchases is the only completed item on my App's distribution tab (I am not ready to submit for review yet..) So as illogical as it appears, is this the way to get your first in-App purchase approved?

StoreKit Config file Options Grayed Out
I have a question concerning Xcode version 26. Ever since I installed this version on my Mac, I have been experiencing issues with the StoreKit configuration file. The Simulated StoreKit Failures check boxes and selections are all grayed out. Once in a while, I see a pop-up stating "The document 'TaConfig.storekit' could not be autosaved. The file has been changed by another application. The pop-up Save as... points to where my config file is located, but the config file is grayed out. I thought maybe the directory where the file is located is write protected, but I have been able to save other files to the same directory. The Edit Scheme... -> Run -> Options has the StoreKit Configuration set for my file TaConfig.storekit. It feels like there is an option somewhere that I'm missing.

Liquid Glass App Icons without Icon Composer
We have found that on iOS 26 beta some of our app icons built from an Xcode 16 asset catalog containing a single 1024x1024 .png file have a Liquid Glass effect applied to them while others have not. The documentation states that If you choose not to use Icon Composer, you can still use an AppIcon asset catalog in your project containing individual app icon images and let the system apply the Liquid Glass material. and If you prefer, you can take advantage of the system’s automatically generated treatment that is applied to all app icons. Is there any insight into how the system treats app icons that have not yet been updated with Icon Composer?

DeviceActivityMonitor extension rejected by App Store Connect validator — NSExtensionPointIdentifier "com.apple.deviceactivity.monitor" invalid (IrisAPI -19241)
Hi everyone, I'm building an iOS app that uses a DeviceActivityMonitor app extension as part of the Screen Time / Family Controls API. Every time I try to upload my IPA to App Store Connect, the validation fails with this error: "Invalid Info.plist value. The value of the NSExtensionPointIdentifier key, com.apple.deviceactivity.monitor, in the Info.plist of 'Alexandria.app/PlugIns/AlexandriaActivityMonitor.appex' is invalid." Error Domain=IrisAPI Code=-19241, iris-code=STATE_ERROR.VALIDATION_ERROR What I have verified (everything looks correct): NSExtensionPointIdentifier = com.apple.deviceactivity.monitor NSExtensionPrincipalClass = AlexandriaActivityMonitor.AlexandriaActivityMonitorExtension (correctly resolved in the compiled binary, verified with plutil -p) The Swift class correctly subclasses DeviceActivityMonitor CFBundleShortVersionString matches the main app Both the main app and extension provisioning profiles explicitly contain com.apple.developer.family-controls = true (verified by inspecting embedded.mobileprovision inside the IPA) The binary code signature itself contains com.apple.developer.family-controls = true (verified with codesign -d --entitlements :-) Family Controls entitlement was requested and approved in the Developer Portal for both App IDs Tested with both Xcode 26.2 (iOS 26 SDK) and Xcode 16.4 (iOS 18 SDK) — same error in both cases The IPA is structurally correct. The error comes purely from Apple's server-side IrisAPI validator and does not correspond to anything I can identify or fix in the code or configuration. Has anyone successfully submitted an app with a DeviceActivityMonitor extension to App Store Connect recently? Is there a backend approval requirement for com.apple.deviceactivity.monitor beyond the standard Family Controls entitlement approval? Could this be a known validator bug for this specific extension type? Any help appreciated.

VoiceOver is interrupted/disabled when running XCUITest (WDA). Request guidance for accessibility research automation on iOS.
Hello, I am working on a research project focused on creating accessible interactions for visually impaired users. I need to verify some automated assistance processes in a real-world usage environment where VoiceOver is enabled. However, I have encountered a blocking issue: When I connect the device through Xcode UI Test / WebDriverAgent (or Appium + WDA) and perform operations, VoiceOver gets interrupted (sometimes it is even directly turned off), preventing blind users from continuing to use the narrator. Replication steps (stable replication)    On iPhone, enable VoiceOver (Settings → Accessibility → Narrator), and keep the device unlocked and the screen on. On Mac, start [Xcode UI Test / WebDriverAgentRunner / Appium+WDA] and establish a session with the device (XCTest session). Perform any operation: read the accessibility tree (/source), take screenshots, or click/slide. Observe the phenomenon: VoiceOver will [automatically turn off / reading interruption / focus jumping / unable to continue reading the new interface]. Expected behavior VoiceOver, as the core accessibility capability, should remain running and be able to continue reading the interface; the automation/assistance process should not "steal" and cause the narrator to fail. Actual behavior VoiceOver is [turned off / interrupted], and even after interface changes, it cannot read normally, affecting the use of blind users. I would like to ask: Non-jailbroken or external hardware-free methods Is this a known limitation (such as the mutual exclusion between XCTest and VoiceOver as Accessibility clients)? Is there an officially supported way to allow the automation/assistance program to safely read necessary information and trigger operations while VoiceOver is enabled, without disrupting the narrator (such as App Intents, Shortcuts, or other API/framework suggestions)? If it is necessary to avoid XCTest/WDA: In the research prototype stage, what is the recommended "reproducible, measurable" alternative technical route?

vCard (.vcf) import on iOS not preserving PHOTO and X-SOCIALPROFILE — expected behavior?
I’m running an experiment around generating and importing .vcf files on iOS and wanted to sanity check expected behavior with others who may have explored this deeper. Goal Programmatically generate a vCard (v3.0) that, when imported into iOS Contacts, includes: Standard fields (name, phone, email, organization, etc.) Contact photo (PHOTO) Social profile (e.g., LinkedIn via X-SOCIALPROFILE) What I tested I tried to eliminate formatting issues by using iOS itself as the source of truth. Steps: Created a new contact directly in iOS Contacts Added name, phone, email Added a contact photo Added a social profile (LinkedIn) Exported that contact as a .vcf Deleted the contact from the device Re-imported the exported .vcf Result Core fields (name, phone, email, etc.) are restored correctly Contact photo is NOT restored Social profile is NOT restored as a native social entry This happens even though: The exported .vcf clearly contains a PHOTO field The exported .vcf includes X-SOCIALPROFILE;type=linkedin:... Additional testing I also generated my own .vcf files that closely mirror the structure produced by iOS (field order, encoding, etc.), and observed the same behavior: Photo does not reliably import Social profiles do not appear as native social entries in Contacts Question Is this expected behavior on iOS? More specifically: Are PHOTO fields intentionally ignored (or restricted) during .vcf import? Is X-SOCIALPROFILE supported for import, or only used internally/exported by Contacts? Is there any supported way to programmatically create a contact with: a photo social profile entries via .vcf import? Current understanding Based on testing, it appears that: iOS may export more data than it will accept on import Some fields (like social profiles and possibly photos) may only be fully supported when created via native APIs (e.g., Contacts framework) rather than .vcf Would appreciate confirmation or any documentation pointers if this is known behavior or if there are recommended alternatives. Closing thought If this is by design, it would be helpful to know which vCard fields are officially supported for import vs. export on iOS, since the current behavior is not entirely symmetric.

iOS 26 UITabBar Layout Glitch: Custom Appearance vs. Liquid Glass Effects during Rotation
Hello, I am encountering a UI layout issue on iOS 26 where UITabBar items become squashed or overlapping during device rotation (from Portrait to Landscape). This glitch occurs specifically when a custom UITabBarAppearance is applied. 1. "Liquid Glass" and UITabBar Customization According to TN3106, Apple states: "Starting in iOS 26, reduce your use of custom backgrounds in navigation elements and controls. While the techniques in this document remain valid for iOS 18 and earlier, prefer to remove custom effects and let the system determine the navigation bar background appearance. Any custom backgrounds and appearances you use in the navigation bar might overlay or interfere with Liquid Glass or other effects that the system provides, such as the scroll edge effect." Does this guidance also apply to UITabBar? Specifically, could setting a custom background color via UITabBarAppearance interfere with internal layout constraints required for the Liquid Glass effect to adapt correctly during orientation changes? It appears that the internal UIStackView may fail to recalculate width in time when these system effects are active. 2. Validation of the Layout Workaround To maintain our app's visual identity while resolving this squashing issue, I implemented the following fix within the transition coordinator of my UITabBarController: Code Implementation (Objective-C) [coordinator animateAlongsideTransition:^(id<UIViewControllerTransitionCoordinatorContext> _Nonnull context) { // Forcing a layout refresh to synchronize with the rotation animation [weakSelf.tabBar invalidateIntrinsicContentSize]; [weakSelf.tabBar setNeedsLayout]; [weakSelf.tabBar layoutIfNeeded]; } completion:nil]; Is manually invalidating the intrinsic content size an acceptable practice for iOS 26? Or is there a more "system-native" approach to ensure UITabBar layout remains stable and compatible with Liquid Glass, especially when custom appearances are necessary?

Enrollment stuck on "Pending complete your purchase" for 6 days, payment confirmed
Hello, I enrolled in the Apple Developer Program as an individual and my account has been stuck in a pending state for 6 days with no progress. What I'm seeing: Account status shows Pending in the top-right dropdown The portal displays a banner: "Purchase your membership. To continue your enrollment, complete your purchase now. Your purchase may take up to 48 hours to process." It has now been well past 48 hours (6 days) Payment status: Payment was successfully charged confirmed on my bank statement I received an official receipt from Apple with an order number No refund or reversal has been issued What I've tried: Waiting the advertised 48 hours (now 6 days past) Signing out and back in Opened a case via Account Help no response yet I'd prefer not to click "complete your purchase now" since payment has already been captured and I don't want to risk a duplicate charge. I have raised ticket on 12th of April and received no reply. Requested call backs waited almost 2+ hours across 3 calls no agent connected. Has anyone experienced this specific state where payment is confirmed on Apple's side but enrollment remains pending indefinitely? Any staff member who can point me toward the right resolution path would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

NSFileWrapper data loss bug in Foundation on macOS Tahoe 26.4.1
There appears to be a data loss bug in NSFileWrapper on macOS 26.4. It may have been around longer but I just never noticed ... So I write a RTFD file wrapper: NSFileWrapper *rtfd = [attributedString RTFDFileWrapperFromRange:NSMakeRange(0, attributedString.length) documentAttributes:@{NSDocumentTypeDocumentAttribute:NSRTFDTextDocumentType}]; Now IF I use -writeToURL:options:originalContentsURL:error: without using the NSFileWrapperWritingAtomic option and I pass in an existing URL, the followings happens: -The method returns NO and populates the NSError with NSFileWriteFileExistsError, as expected. This is what I want. -BUT the existing file is nuked. It just disappears. Foundation kills it. Poof. Another thing I gotta workaround. Getting pretty ridiculous, I must say. Just my lucky day I guess. It would be wonderful if I could work on my own features and fixing my own bugs.

My VPN client has troubles being uploaded.
Hello Apple Developer commuinty! We have been developing a VPN client app with unique protocol for quite a while, and now it have come to publishing it in App Store/Google play. I know that publishing a VPN service requires organization(which i cant register because of my life situation), that why i have choosen to make a client. User is NOT necessarily required to use official hosting, theres an option of importing external key. App itself, doesnt contain any hardcoded server credentials and such, but it does have option to get free config from website by click. For some reason, my app review have not gone well. Apple have claimed my app have violated Guidelines 4.3(a) and 5.4. In all of my respect for App Review Team, but claim on Guideline 4.3(a) - Spam is completely ridiculous! App was completely written from the ground, not only including protocol, but the design itself. The "MONOGON" style, is unique application style which no other app on app store have seen(featuring dotted ASCII style, with blooms and contrast colors). In a million years, i would never guess what they have seen "identical to other apps on app store". Claim on Guideline 5.4 though, is a lot more reasonable, yet still not exactly correct. My app is mainly a client, not a service. The main function of it - bringing secure d1mension protocol to live on iOS and iPadOS platforms. The first setup, has both link to get official config(completely free without login, similar to AmneziaWG app), or to import own config. The code secures and encrypts packets such a way, that no external server could listen/decrypt it except for the original user destination, which makes it completely secure for the user. The main goal of DrochVPN app, is to bring users freedom in how they connect, to which server they connect. Any sort of help with publishing our app would be greatly appreciated, and we are ready to introduce changes, if they are required. App review identificator: 2f59adfb-ec49-4431-91c0-8e9b1984ad2e

Kernel panic when using fclonefileat from ES
Hi, I am developing instant snapshot backup solution for macOS using Endpoint Security. We have stumbled upon a Kernel Panic when using "fclonefileat" API. We are catching a kernel panic on customer machines when attempting to clone the file during ES sync callback: panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe002c495508): "apfs_io_lock_exclusive : Recursive exclusive lock attempt" @fs_utils.c:435 I have symbolized the backtrace to know it is related to clone operation with the following backtrace: apfs_io_lock_exclusive apfs_clone_internal apfs_vnop_clonefile I made a minimal repro that boils down to the following operations: apfs_crash_stress - launch thread to do rsrc writes static void *rsrc_write_worker(void *arg) { int id = (int)(long)arg; char buf[8192]; long n = 0; fill_pattern(buf, sizeof(buf), 'W' + id); while (n < ITERATION_LIMIT) { int file_idx = n % NUM_SOURCE_FILES; int fd = open(g_src_rsrc[file_idx], O_WRONLY | O_CREAT, 0644); if (fd >= 0) { off_t off = ((n * 4096) % RSRC_DATA_SIZE); pwrite(fd, buf, sizeof(buf), off); if ((n & 0x7) == 0) fsync(fd); close(fd); } else { setxattr(g_src[file_idx], "com.apple.ResourceFork", buf, sizeof(buf), 0, 0); } n++; } printf("[rsrc_wr_%d] done (%ld ops)\n", id, n); return NULL; } apfs_crash_es - simple ES client that is cloning the file (error checking omitted for brevity) static std::string volfsPath(uint64_t devId, uint64_t vnodeId) { return "/.vol/" + std::to_string(devId) + "/" + std::to_string(vnodeId); } static void cloneAndScheduleDelete(const std::string& sourcePath, dispatch_queue_t queue, uint64_t devId, uint64_t vnodeId) { struct stat st; if (stat(sourcePath.c_str(), &st) != 0 || !S_ISREG(st.st_mode)) return; int srcFd = open(sourcePath.c_str(), O_RDONLY); const char* cloneDir = "/Users/admin/Downloads/_clone"; mkdir(cloneDir, 0755); const char* filename = strrchr(sourcePath.c_str(), '/'); filename = filename ? filename + 1 : sourcePath.c_str(); std::string cloneFilename = std::string(filename) + ".clone." + std::to_string(time(nullptr)) + "." + std::to_string(getpid()); std::string clonePath = std::string(cloneDir) + "/" + cloneFilename; fclonefileat(srcFd, AT_FDCWD, clonePath.c_str(), 0); { dispatch_after(dispatch_time(DISPATCH_TIME_NOW, 1 * NSEC_PER_SEC), queue, ^{ if (unlink(clonePath.c_str()) == 0) { LOG("Deleted clone: %s", clonePath.c_str()); } else { LOG("Failed to delete clone: %s", clonePath.c_str()); } }); } close(srcFd); } static const es_file_t* file(const es_message_t* msg) { switch (msg->event_type) { case ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_OPEN: return msg->event.open.file; case ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_EXEC: return msg->event.exec.target->executable; case ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_RENAME: return msg->event.rename.source; } return nullptr; } int main(void) { es_client_t* cli; auto ret = es_new_client(&cli, ^(es_client_t* client, const es_message_t * msgc) { if (msgc->process->is_es_client) { es_mute_process(client, &msgc->process->audit_token); return respond(client, msgc, true); } dispatch_async(esQueue, ^{ bool shouldClone = false; if (msgc->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_OPEN) { auto& ev = msgc->event.open; if (ev.fflag & (FWRITE | O_RDWR | O_WRONLY | O_TRUNC | O_APPEND)) { shouldClone = true; } } else if (msgc->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_UNLINK || msgc->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_RENAME) { shouldClone = true; } if (shouldClone) { if (auto f = ::file(msgc)) cloneAndScheduleDelete(f->path.data, cloneQueue, f->stat.st_dev, f->stat.st_ino); } respond(client, msgc, true); }); }); LOG("es_new_client -> %d", ret); es_event_type_t events[] = { ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_OPEN, ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_EXEC, ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_RENAME, ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_UNLINK, }; es_subscribe(cli, events, sizeof(events) / sizeof(*events)); } Create 2 terminal sessions and run the following commands: % sudo ./apfs_crash_es % sudo ./apfs_crash_stress ~/Downloads/test/ Machine will very quickly panic due to APFS deadlock. I expect that no userspace syscall should be able to cause kernel panic. It looks like a bug in APFS implementation and requires fix on XNU/kext side. We were able to reproduce this issue on macOS 26.3.1/15.6.1 on Intel/ARM machines. Here is the panic string: panic_string.txt Source code without XCode project: apfs_crash_es.cpp apfs_crash_stress.cpp Full XCode project + full panic is available at https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/0f215KkZffPOTLpETPo-LdaXw#apfs%5Fcrash%5Fes

Bug: Finder/AppleScript interaction
I have created a simple AppleScript that makes a folder named with today’s date. For many years, it has worked fine except: If I run the script (from a script app in the menu bar), then dump files into the folder, then change the colored “Tag” on the folder, I get a Finder error - An unexpected error occurred (error code -8076) - and I have to force-quit the Finder to complete the color tagging. If it change the tag before dumping the files, no error occurs. (Please hold the “Doctor, it hurts when I do this …” jokes.) This error has persisted through many macOS major iterations, including Tahoe 26.4.1. Prolly a Finder bug, but not sure. Here’s the source, for anyone interested. set dateStr to getDate() --display dialog dateStr tell application "Finder" activate try --set thisFolder to (the target of the front window) as alias set thisFolder to (the target of the front window) as string make new folder at thisFolder with properties {name:dateStr as string} on error errMsg display dialog "ERROR: " & errMsg end try end tell on getDate() set theDate to current date set theYear to year of theDate as string set theNewYear to third character of theYear & fourth character of theYear set theMonth to month of theDate as number as string if length of theMonth = 1 then set theMonth to "0" & theMonth as string end if set theDay to day of theDate as string if length of theDay = 1 then set theDay to "0" & theDay as string end if return theNewYear & " " & theMonth & " " & theDay as string end getDate

KDK for recent MacOS Sequoia versions (15.6, 15.7RC)
The most recent KDK for MacOS Sequoia that appears in the Downloads is for MacOS 15.5 (24F74), but the current version of MacOS Sequoia is 15.6 (24G84) and 15.7 (24G207) is in RC. Is there an ETA for the KDKs for 15.6 (24G84) and 15.7 (24G207) to be made available to download? Many thanks for any help.

Error Domain=IrisAPI Code=-19241, iris-code=STATE_ERROR.VALIDATION_ERROR What I have verified (everything looks correct): NSExtensionPointIdentifier = com.apple.deviceactivity.monitor NSExtensionPrincipalClass = AlexandriaActivityMonitor.AlexandriaActivityMonitorExtension (correctly resolved in the compiled binary, verified with plutil -p) The Swift class correctly subclasses DeviceActivityMonitor CFBundleShortVersionString matches the main app Both the main app and extension provisioning profiles explicitly contain com.apple.developer.family-controls = true (verified by inspecting embedded.mobileprovision inside the IPA) The binary code signature itself contains com.apple.developer.family-controls = true (verified with codesign -d --entitlements :-) Family Controls entitlement was requested and approved in the Developer Portal for both App IDs Tested with both Xcode 26.2 (iOS 26 SDK) and Xcode 16.4 (iOS 18 SDK) — same error in both cases The IPA is structurally correct.

Hi, I am developing instant snapshot backup solution for macOS using Endpoint Security. We have stumbled upon a Kernel Panic when using "fclonefileat" API. We are catching a kernel panic on customer machines when attempting to clone the file during ES sync callback: panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffe002c495508): "apfs_io_lock_exclusive : Recursive exclusive lock attempt" @fs_utils.c:435 I have symbolized the backtrace to know it is related to clone operation with the following backtrace: apfs_io_lock_exclusive apfs_clone_internal apfs_vnop_clonefile I made a minimal repro that boils down to the following operations: apfs_crash_stress - launch thread to do rsrc writes static void *rsrc_write_worker(void *arg) { int id = (int)(long)arg; char buf[8192]; long n = 0; fill_pattern(buf, sizeof(buf), 'W' + id); while (n < ITERATION_LIMIT) { int file_idx = n % NUM_SOURCE_FILES; int fd = open(g_src_rsrc[file_idx], O_WRONLY | O_CREAT, 0644); if (fd >= 0) { off_t off = ((n * 4096) % RSRC_DATA_SIZE); pwrite(fd, buf, sizeof(buf), off); if ((n & 0x7) == 0) fsync(fd); close(fd); } else { setxattr(g_src[file_idx], "com.apple.ResourceFork", buf, sizeof(buf), 0, 0); } n++; } printf("[rsrc_wr_%d] done (%ld ops)\n", id, n); return NULL; } apfs_crash_es - simple ES client that is cloning the file (error checking omitted for brevity) static std::string volfsPath(uint64_t devId, uint64_t vnodeId) { return "/.vol/" + std::to_string(devId) + "/" + std::to_string(vnodeId); } static void cloneAndScheduleDelete(const std::string& sourcePath, dispatch_queue_t queue, uint64_t devId, uint64_t vnodeId) { struct stat st; if (stat(sourcePath.c_str(), &st) != 0 || !S_ISREG(st.st_mode)) return; int srcFd = open(sourcePath.c_str(), O_RDONLY); const char* cloneDir = "/Users/admin/Downloads/_clone"; mkdir(cloneDir, 0755); const char* filename = strrchr(sourcePath.c_str(), '/'); filename = filename ? filename + 1 : sourcePath.c_str(); std::string cloneFilename = std::string(filename) + ".clone." + std::to_string(time(nullptr)) + "." + std::to_string(getpid()); std::string clonePath = std::string(cloneDir) + "/" + cloneFilename; fclonefileat(srcFd, AT_FDCWD, clonePath.c_str(), 0); { dispatch_after(dispatch_time(DISPATCH_TIME_NOW, 1 * NSEC_PER_SEC), queue, ^{ if (unlink(clonePath.c_str()) == 0) { LOG("Deleted clone: %s", clonePath.c_str()); } else { LOG("Failed to delete clone: %s", clonePath.c_str()); } }); } close(srcFd); } static const es_file_t* file(const es_message_t* msg) { switch (msg->event_type) { case ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_OPEN: return msg->event.open.file; case ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_EXEC: return msg->event.exec.target->executable; case ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_RENAME: return msg->event.rename.source; } return nullptr; } int main(void) { es_client_t* cli; auto ret = es_new_client(&cli, ^(es_client_t* client, const es_message_t * msgc) { if (msgc->process->is_es_client) { es_mute_process(client, &msgc->process->audit_token); return respond(client, msgc, true); } dispatch_async(esQueue, ^{ bool shouldClone = false; if (msgc->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_OPEN) { auto& ev = msgc->event.open; if (ev.fflag & (FWRITE | O_RDWR | O_WRONLY | O_TRUNC | O_APPEND)) { shouldClone = true; } } else if (msgc->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_UNLINK || msgc->event_type == ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_RENAME) { shouldClone = true; } if (shouldClone) { if (auto f = ::file(msgc)) cloneAndScheduleDelete(f->path.data, cloneQueue, f->stat.st_dev, f->stat.st_ino); } respond(client, msgc, true); }); }); LOG("es_new_client -> %d", ret); es_event_type_t events[] = { ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_OPEN, ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_EXEC, ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_RENAME, ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_UNLINK, }; es_subscribe(cli, events, sizeof(events) / sizeof(*events)); } Create 2 terminal sessions and run the following commands: % sudo ./apfs_crash_es % sudo ./apfs_crash_stress ~/Downloads/test/ Machine will very quickly panic due to APFS deadlock. I expect that no userspace syscall should be able to cause kernel panic. It looks like a bug in APFS implementation and requires fix on XNU/kext side. We were able to reproduce this issue on macOS 26.3.1/15.6.1 on Intel/ARM machines. Here is the panic string: panic_string.txt Source code without XCode project: apfs_crash_es.cpp apfs_crash_stress.cpp Full XCode project + full panic is available at https://www.icloud.com/iclouddrive/0f215KkZffPOTLpETPo-LdaXw#apfs%5Fcrash%5Fes
