QuickLook Thumbnailing returns stale macOS 26 folder icon
On macOS 26, I've run into a situation when a user “customizes” a folder icon with Finder by assigning/changing an SF Symbol or an emoji, QLThumbnailGenerator keeps returning the stale initially retrieved folder icon (no matter whether it had been customized or not) until my app quits. After the app is re-launched, the icon is correctly retrieved once again. let generator = QLThumbnailGenerator.shared let size: CGSize = CGSize(width: 64, height: 64) let request = QLThumbnailGenerator.Request(fileAt: url, size: size, scale: NSScreen.main!.backingScaleFactor, representationTypes: .icon) request.iconMode = true do { let thumb = try await generator.generateBestRepresentation(for: request) thumb.nsImage.size = size return thumb.nsImage } catch { print("generateThumbnail: \(error)") return nil } It seems like the QuickLook Thumbnailing cache does not invalidate automatically upon folder customization. Is there any way to manually invalidate the QuickLook Thumbnailing cache?

Memory consumption of apps under macOS 26 "Tahoe"
macOS 26 "Tahoe" is allocating much more memory for apps than former macOS versions: A customer contacted me with my app's Thumbnail extension allocating so much memory that her 48 GB RAM Mac Mini ran into "out of application memory" state. I couldn't identify any memory leak in my extension's code nor reproduce the issue, but found the main app allocating as much as 5 times the memory compared to running on macOS 15 or lower. This productive app is explicitly using "Liquid Glass" views as well as implicitly e.g. for an inspector pane. So I created a sample app, just based on Xcode's template of a document-based app, and the issue is still showing (although less dramatically): This sample app allocates 22 MB according to Tahoe's Activity Monitor, while Sequoia only requires 16 MB: macOS 15.6.1 macOS 26.2 Is anyone experiencing similar issues? I suspect some massive leak in Tahoe's memory management, and just filed a corresponding feedback (FB21967167).

Finder tag colors and folder icons become gray for iCloud Drive items (URLResourceValues / xattr / QLThumbnailGenerator)
Hi, I’m working on a macOS app that includes a file browser component. And I’m trying to match Finder’s behavior for color tags and folder icons. For local files/folders everything works fine: Tag color key returns the expected label number via NSColor * labelColor = nil; [fileURL getResourceValue:&labelColor forKey:NSURLLabelColorKey error:nil]; NSNumber * labelKey = nil; [fileURL getResourceValue:&labelKey forKey:NSURLLabelNumberKey error:nil]; QLThumbnailGenerator obtains the expected colored folder icon (including emoji/symbol overlay if set) via QLThumbnailGenerationRequest * request = [[QLThumbnailGenerationRequest alloc] initWithFileAtURL:fileURL size:iconSize scale:scaleFactor representationTypes:QLThumbnailGenerationRequestRepresentationTypeIcon]; request.iconMode = YES; [[QLThumbnailGenerator sharedGenerator] generateBestRepresentationForRequest:request completionHandler:^(QLThumbnailRepresentation * _Nullable thumbnail, NSError * _Nullable error) { if (thumbnail != nil && error == nil) { NSImage * thumbnailImage = [thumbnail NSImage]; // ... } }]; However, for items on iCloud Drive (whether currently downloaded locally or only stored in the cloud), the same code always produces gray colors, while Finder shows everything correctly: NSURLLabelNumberKey always returns 1 (gray) for items with color tags, and 0 for non-tagged. Folder icons returned via QLThumbnailGenerator are gray, no emoji/symbol overlays. Reading tag data from xattr gives values like “Green\1” (tag name matches, but numeric value is still "Gray"). Also, if I move a correctly-tagged local item into iCloud Drive, it immediately becomes gray in my app (Finder still shows the correct colors). Question: What is the supported way to retrieve Finder tag colors and the correct folder icon appearance (color + overlays) for items in iCloud Drive, so that the result matches Finder? I am on macOS Tahoe 26.2/26.3, Xcode 26.2 (17C52). If you need any additional details, please let me know. Thanks!

Testing/debugging QLThumbnailProvider on macOS
I'm implementing the 'new' QLThumbnailProvider for our macOS app... So I just created the skeleton from Xcode, added our QLSupportedContentTypes in Info.plist, and have the skeleton code like below: import QuickLookThumbnailing class ThumbnailProvider: QLThumbnailProvider { override func provideThumbnail(for request: QLFileThumbnailRequest, _ handler: @escaping (QLThumbnailReply?, Error?) -> Void) { // cannot trigger break point here! } I understand I should test the Thumbnail Extension by using: $ qlmanage -t my_file.ext Testing Quick Look thumbnails with files: my_file.ext But I don't know what process to attach to in the Xcode debugger... a bit clueless... I've skimmed relevant parts of https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2019/719, but there is no real debug tips... Does anyone know if it is possible to debug with Xcode or not? And if possible, then how? 😅

How to debug Quick Look Preview Extension
I'm facing the same problem as addressed in this discussion: After switching from legacy QLGenerators to Preview extensions on macOS I cannot debug the extensions' code in Xcode, anymore: I launch the app with the embedded appex from Xcode in debug mode. When trying to attach to the appex process the following error is reported: Code: 6 Failure Reason: Ensure “AppName Preview” is not already running, and matthias has permission to debug it. User Info: {... } System Information macOS Version 15.4.1 (Build 24E263) Xcode 16.3 (23785) (Build 16E140) Timestamp: 2025-05-12T14:07:14+02:00 I'm using a standard user account (no admin) and might miss some obvious steps. Can someone detail the steps to debug a Preview (or Thumbnail) extension with Xcode 16? For legacy Quick Look plugins I was using "qlmanage", but that's not working on extensions. All the best, Matthias P.S.: Pardon me re-posting my reply as a separate thread, to increase visibility, but I'm quite desperate and couldn't find any solution on the web...

iOS 18.3.1 - QLPreviewControllerView closing triggers AX Lookup problem - errorCode:1100 error:Permission denied portName:'com.apple.iphone.axserver' PID:1022
Since iOS 18.3.1, In lower iOS versions it works fine though. QLPreviewController shows a blank white screen instead of showing the document. Additionally, it does not display the 'Done' option at the top-right to close the view. Presenting the QLPreviewController works fine to display the document, but for the second time, it renders the blank white screen as described. While launching QLPreviewControllerView for the first time. I'm receiving the following message in the console and it displays the document. QuickLook Library updated text tampered on PDF
We were using below delegate methods from QuickLook to get modified PDF file URL after the sketching But we are not able see the multi line text properly laid out on PDF and part of text missing. Same time Other pencil kit tools are working as expected. `func previewController(_ controller: QLPreviewController, didSaveEditedCopyOf previewItem: QLPreviewItem, at modifiedContentsURL: URL) func previewController(_ controller: QLPreviewController, didUpdateContentsOf previewItem: any QLPreviewItem)` We tested all code in iOS 18.2. Please let us know if the text edited URL on PDF can be retrieved in any possible way without tampering text

QLPreviewingController can access previewed file, but cannot load files referenced by the previewed file
I have an app on the Mac App Store (so sandboxed) that includes a QuickLook Preview Extension that targets Markdown files. It established a QLPreviewingController instance for the macOS QuickLook system to access and it works. I'm in the process of updating it so that it displays inline images referenced in the file as well as styling the file's text. However, despite setting Downloads folder read-only access permission (and user-selected, though I know that shouldn't be required: no open/save dialogs here) in the extension's entitlements, Sandbox refuses too allow access to the test image: I always get a deny(1) file-read-data error in the log. FWIW, the test file is referenced in the source Markdown as an absolute unix file path. I've tried different signings and no joy. I’ve tried placing the referenced image in various other locations. Also no joy. All I can display is the error-case bundle image for 'missing image'. Question is, is this simply something that QuickLook extensions cannot do from within the sandbox, or am I missing something? Is there anything extra I can do to debug this?

Finder File Previews lock files on SMB shares
I've developed a new Quicklook data-based preview extension for a custom file type that generates an image preview of the file. I previously used a Quick Look generator plug-in but support for it was deprecated and now removed in macOS Sequoia. My app opens files using a open(url.path, O_RDWR | O_NONBLOCK | O_EXLOCK) call. The locking flags are used to prevent other clients from writing the file if it's already open. I discovered that when Finder is showing the “large” file previews (such as when in column or gallery modes) from a SMB share, the open call fails with EWOULDBLOCK as if the file is locked. It does work just fine on local files. Opening with O_SHLOCK also has the issue. Surprisingly it does work just fine for previews that return Plain Text data instead of Image data. Using the lsof command, it seems like the Quicklook process has some kind of lock on the file. This is the output of the lsof command: COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE QuickLook 48487 XXXX txt REG 1,15 125000611 3161369 Attached is a test project that tries a few different opening and locking functions. It also includes a test file and a sample image preview extension that displays a red square. When everything is working, regular console messages show the progress of the tests. When the file is on a SMB share and selected in Finder Gallery mode, the open test will fail with a fault message in the console. Notably, locking with flock works, which is weird because it should have similar semantics according to the man page for open(2). Filed this as FB15051186

Thumbnails for images saved in core data
I'm trying to look at what the best way to do thumbnails for images that are saved in core data, which are being synced across multiple devices. I know I can save a lower quality version into core data, but I'm wondering if there's a better way of doing it. I've come across quick look thumbnailing which looks like what I want, but I'm not sure if it can be adapted for core data as its using file paths, whereas the images are stored in a data type property in core data. From what I can tell, I'd have to save the image locally, produce the thumbnail, then delete the local image

QLPreviewController Blinks on Previewing Some PDF files
QLPreview keeps blinking and stops previewing the file when opening some high-resolution PDF files with heavy content. This can only be simulated in a real device built in xcode simulators cant simulate the issue. Tested in Xcode Version 15.4 (15F31d) and iPadOS Version 17.5.1. How to stop Finder from triggering full file download of a file on network share to generate the thumbnail
Default behaviour of the macOS when interacting via Finder with a network share is to create thumbnails to provide a nice user experience. This behaviour is implemented by QuickLook framework. This triggers the full file download and quickly lead to cache using large disk space and even cache trashing. We can disable QuickLook selectively by injecting specially prepared .DS_Store file with instruction/setup to disable thumbnails in that directory but still degrades user's experience only in the network share ecosystem. Is there any way we can provide our own thumbnails or ask Finder to not download full file to generate the thumbnail?

Is there any way to provide our own thumbnails for the file types that the system already supports?
I want to provide my own thumbnails for the file types which System already provides thumbnails for. I tried using QLThumbnailProvider however it works only when the file type is custom. For system supported file types it doesn't allow me to override my own thumbnails. Is there any alternative to this?

Accesing Files in Thumbnail Extension and Quick Look Extension
I am developing Thumbnail Extension. To prepare a graphic (in .dylib) for file specified in URL.path I need to access second file, which has the same filename, but different extension. For example, I have "data" in file.xxx and "colors" in file.yyy. Is it possible to read data from this second file while processing the first file in my extension? In my current implementation it sometimes works, but most of the time it doesn't work - it is not possible to read data from file.yyy when preparing thumbnail for file.xxx, causing exception in my .dylib routine. Is there some setting which would allow me to do this?

QLSupportedContentTypes cannot contain system-supported types (UTIs)
Hi folks, My app is reading proprietary files with the file name extension .JPX - which is out of my control. In addition I’m providing QuickLook and Thumbnail extensions, used system-wide and in my app. Unfortunately iOS is assigning the JPEG-2000 file type (UTI „public.jpeg-2000“) to this file extension, and therefore - to work with associated files - my app is importing this UTI and both extensions are listing „public.jpeg-2000“ in their info.plist as QLSupportedContentTypes. This works to some extent in simulators and when debugging from Xcode on a device: Files with the file extension „.JPX“ are listed with thumbnails provided by my extension, although the preview seems to invoke the system-provided viewer and fails. Not perfect, but good enough as my app requires an icon preview (aka thumbnail) in its UIDocumentBrowserViewController. But when I try to submit my app incl. extensions to the Apple App Store / TestFlight asset validation is reporting an error: „Asset validation failed. Invalid Info.plist value. The value for the key ‚QLSupportedContentTypes‘ in bundle … is invalid. [public.jpeg-2000] are system-supported types.“ How to assign QuickLook / Thumbnail extensions to 3rd party files types whose extension is conflicting with a system-supported UTI? I just spent one of my TSIs for this question - as my Apple developer membership is renewed shortly - but maybe this community as some smart tip to share... Appreciate any help, Mattes

Embed external binary in QuickLook Preview application
Hello, I am trying to write a simple QuickLook generator, which takes a file, runs an external binary to produce the data, and then creates and shows an image in a preview. The input files are uncommon data formats, and the binary in this case converts these to PNG. I have tried multiple methods and followed many discussions on these forums and StackOverflow, but unfortunately I am yet to get it working. That said, the program I have builds and runs using the qlmanage tool, however when running in Finder or on the server qlmanage -x the program fails. As I understand, it when using QuickLook in Finder it calls the QuickLook daemon quicklookd which is also called when using the qlmanage -x CLI command, but please correct me if I am wrong about this. The basic idea for all generator functions is: create NSTask or Process and run the third-party binary, using the requested file path as input run the task, pipe output, and read output convert the piped output to NSImage show image Attempt 1 (old-style qlgenerator plugin in Obj-C): Initially I tried adding the binary as an asset to the QuickLook Preview target and the generator would work as mentioned using qlmanage, however it would not work using qlmanage -x or from Finder. Here is the preview function: OSStatus GeneratePreviewForURL(void *thisInterface, QLPreviewRequestRef preview, CFURLRef url, CFStringRef contentTypeUTI, CFDictionaryRef options) { NSLog(@"QuickLook plugin started"); NSInteger width = 512; NSURL *fileURL = (__bridge NSURL *)url; NSString *escapedFilePath = [fileURL.path stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@" " withString:@"\\ "]; NSLog(@"Original Path: %@", fileURL.path); NSLog(@"Escaped Path: %@", escapedFilePath); NSBundle *bundle = [NSBundle bundleWithIdentifier:@"com.pjharrison.qlgwyddion"]; NSURL *nsURLExecutable = [bundle URLForAuxiliaryExecutable:@"gwyddion-thumbnailer"]; if (nsURLExecutable) { // The resource was found, and nsURLData is not nil. // Proceed with using nsURLData. NSLog(@"Resource 'gwyddion-thumbnailer' found in the bundle."); } else { // The resource was not found. Handle the situation accordingly. NSLog(@"Resource 'gwyddion-thumbnailer' not found in the bundle."); } NSTask *task = [[NSTask alloc] init]; NSLog(@"Pathhhh %@", nsURLExecutable.path); [task setExecutableURL:nsURLExecutable]; [task setArguments:@[@"kde4", [@(width) stringValue], escapedFilePath]]; NSLog(@"Task set"); NSString *argumentString = [task.arguments componentsJoinedByString:@" "]; NSLog(argumentString); NSPipe *pipe = [NSPipe pipe]; NSFileHandle *file = pipe.fileHandleForReading; [task setStandardOutput:pipe]; NSLog(@"Pipe set"); [task launch]; NSLog(@"Task launched"); NSData *data = [file readDataToEndOfFile]; NSLog(@"Got data"); [task waitUntilExit]; NSLog(@"Task completed"); NSInteger taskStatusCode = [task terminationStatus]; NSLog(@"Task finished with status code %ld", taskStatusCode); NSString *dataLength = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%lu", data.length]; NSLog(dataLength); CGDataProviderRef imageDataProvider = CGDataProviderCreateWithCFData((CFDataRef)data); CGImageRef cgImage = CGImageCreateWithPNGDataProvider(imageDataProvider, NULL, true, kCGRenderingIntentDefault); if (cgImage) { CGFloat height = CGImageGetHeight(cgImage); CGFloat width = CGImageGetWidth(cgImage); CGSize size = CGSizeMake(width, height); // Preview will be drawn in a vectorized context CGRect rect = CGRectMake(0, 0, width, height); CGContextRef cgContext = QLPreviewRequestCreateContext(preview, size, true, NULL); CGContextDrawImage(cgContext, rect, cgImage); NSLog(@"Image drawn"); QLPreviewRequestFlushContext(preview, cgContext); NSLog(@"Flushed"); // release resources if (cgContext) { CFRelease(cgContext); NSLog(@"Context released"); } CGImageRelease(cgImage); NSLog(@"Image released"); } else { NSLog(@"cgImage is NULL"); } return noErr; } Inspection console logs would give various Operation not permitted errors when run from the quicklookd server. I suspect that possibly this is due to App Sandboxing issues. Attempt 2 After coming across various articles online by @eskimo and others, including the official docs and various other posts, I have tried to sign the binary executable as described in the documentation and embed it in the project. Unfortunately after signing the app I have not been able to get the executable to run. When called from the QuickLook Preview function, the process returns with an error code. Perhaps the issue is here and the executable has not been signed properly? Attempt 3 I have also tried to create a Swift-based app and add a QuickLook Extension to the app (creating an app with a .appex) using a similar flow as tried in Attempt 1. Also no luck here so far. At this point I am stuck and would appreciate any help or pointers! Many thanks in advance.

Quick looks not working with old configuration/ code.
Hello, I am experiencing an issue with a piece of JavaScript code that I use for triggering Quick Look on iOS devices. This functionality was working fine until the recent non-beta updates of iOS 17. It still functions as expected on older iOS versions and some beta versions of iOS 17, but not on the latest update. Here's the original code snippet: anchor.setAttribute('rel', 'ar'); anchor.appendChild(document.createElement('img')); anchor.setAttribute("id", "charpstar"); return (usdzSrc) => { anchor.setAttribute('href', usdzSrc + "#allowsContentScaling=0"); anchor.click(); }; With this code, the Quick Look feature used to work directly without navigating to an intermediary page. However, after the update, it ceased functioning. The error I am getting is "Object needs new version of iOS" To troubleshoot, I modified the code as follows: anchor.href = `${realityFileUrl}#allowsContentScaling=0`; anchor.addEventListener('click', (event) => { event.preventDefault(); window.open(anchor.href, '_blank'); }); // Append the anchor element to the document body. document.body.appendChild(anchor); // Click the anchor element to open the .reality file. anchor.click(); This revised approach does open the file, but it first navigates to an intermediary page, which is not acceptable for our client's user experience. Could you provide guidance on how to resolve this issue? Specifically, I'm looking for a way to use Quick Look on iOS 17 (non-beta versions) without being redirected to an intermediary page. Any insights or updates regarding changes in iOS 17 that might affect this functionality would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your assistance.

Should I register(?) my app extension?
Hi, I'm developing quick look extensions of my app's custom files to display previews and thumbnails in the finder. When I developed and debugged these extensions, they were listed on the "added extensions" in the System Settings > Privacy and Security > Extensions. And They worked. But, they don't appear on the list when I made a package and install it on my mac or testing machine. And the quick look didn't work at all. Should I configure build settings or packaging options to make them register(?) or work?

This attempt will not be retried. Closing the QLPreviewController with the help of the 'Done' option from top-right or swipe to close triggers the following message in the console. Connection to appex interrupted AX Lookup problem - errorCode:1100 error:Permission denied portName:'com.apple.iphone.axserver' PID:1022 ( 0 AXRuntime 0x00000001d2cd7758 _AXGetPortFromCache + 796 1 AXRuntime 0x00000001d2cdd02c AXUIElementPerformFencedActionWithValue + 700 2 UIKit 0x0000000258cdf488 7F0274D9-D3C9-3193-B606-1C74BE53B86C + 1537160 3 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000101bb888c _dispatch_call_block_and_release + 32 4 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000101bba578 _dispatch_client_callout + 20 5 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000101bc2454 _dispatch_lane_serial_drain + 840 6 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000101bc325c _dispatch_lane_invoke + 408 7 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000101bd06fc _dispatch_root_queue_drain_deferred_wlh + 328 8 libdispatch.dylib 0x0000000101bcfd0c _dispatch_workloop_worker_thread + 580 9 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x0000000225ea4680 _pthread_wqthread + 288 10 libsystem_pthread.dylib 0x0000000225ea2474 start_wqthread + 8 ) Trying to open he document again, Ultimately results in the white blank screen to be displayed with no options to close.

QLPreview keeps blinking and stops previewing the file when opening some high-resolution PDF files with heavy content. This can only be simulated in a real device built in xcode simulators cant simulate the issue. Tested in Xcode Version 15.4 (15F31d) and iPadOS Version 17.5.1. Following is My Sample code : import UIKit import QuickLook class ViewController: UIViewController { var currentViewFilePath = "" let preview = QLPreviewController() override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() self.setupQLPreview() loaddata() // Do any additional setup after loading the view. } func loaddata(){ if let fileURL = Bundle.main.url(forResource: "CD28048D", withExtension: "pdf") { self.currentViewFilePath = fileURL.relativePath self.preview.reloadData() // Use the fileURL here print("File URL: \(fileURL)") } else { print("File not found") } } } extension ViewController:QLPreviewControllerDelegate,QLPreviewControllerDataSource{ func setupQLPreview(){ preview.delegate = self preview.dataSource = self self.view.addSubview(preview.view) let previewhight = (UIScreen.main.bounds.height - ((self.navigationController?.navigationBar.frame.height ?? 0))) preview.view.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false preview.view.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.view.topAnchor).isActive = true preview.view.leftAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.view.leftAnchor,constant: 4).isActive = true preview.view.rightAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.view.rightAnchor,constant: -4).isActive = true preview.view.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.view.leadingAnchor,constant: 4).isActive = true preview.view.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.view.trailingAnchor,constant: -4).isActive = true preview.view.widthAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: self.view.frame.width-8).isActive = true preview.view.heightAnchor.constraint(equalToConstant: previewhight-4).isActive = true preview.view.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: self.view.bottomAnchor).isActive = true preview.navigationController?.isNavigationBarHidden = true self.addChild(preview) preview.didMove(toParent: self) } func numberOfPreviewItems(in controller: QLPreviewController) -> Int { if self.currentViewFilePath.isEmpty || self.currentViewFilePath == ""{ return 0 }else{ return 1 } } func previewController(_ controller: QLPreviewController, previewItemAt index: Int) -> QLPreviewItem { let fileUrl = URL(fileURLWithPath: self.currentViewFilePath) return fileUrl as QLPreviewItem } } while running the above code Xcode debugger prints following errors: View service did terminate with error: Error Domain=_UIViewServiceInterfaceErrorDomain Code=3 "(null)" UserInfo={Message=Service Connection Interrupted} #Remote Preview collection viewServiceDidTerminateWithError: Error Domain=_UIViewServiceInterfaceErrorDomain Code=3 "(null)" UserInfo={Message=Service Connection Interrupted} #Remote [u 0AA9D4C5-BBA1-56F6-8FFF-F5F56B99399A:m (null)] [com.apple.quicklook.extension.previewUI(1.0)] Connection to plugin invalidated while in use.
