input type="number" not mapped to spinbutton role
input[type=number] mapped to AXTextField instead of AXIncrementor/UIAccessibilityTraitAdjustable in Safari (macOS and iOS). According to ML-AAM 1.0, <input type="number"> is required to map to the ARIA spinbutton role, but it is not being mapped as expected on WebKit (macOS and iOS) to the platform accessibility APIs: the element is reported as AXTextField on macOS and lacks UIAccessibilityTraitAdjustable on iOS. As a consequence, VoiceOver announces the element as a textfield rather than a spinbutton, does not increment with arrow keys on macOS, and does not respond to the swipe up/down gesture on iOS. This affects every <input type="number"> on the web (quantity steppers, age inputs, year pickers, etc). Authors are currently forced to work around it by reimplementing the spinbutton with role="spinbutton", which force the authors to emulate the native HTML solutions with JavaScript, contradicts the First Rule of ARIA Use and presents another interaction issues in WebKit (will create an issue about this and update this post later). iOS Safari keyboard shifts entire viewport and moves fixed header
Hi, I’m experiencing a persistent issue with the iOS on-screen keyboard in mobile Safari. My website (built with PHP, but the issue is clearly on the frontend) has a fixed header (position: fixed; top: 0). However, when a user focuses on an input field and the keyboard opens, the entire viewport shifts upward. No matter what I try, the keyboard seems to push everything up: The header does not stay fixed at the top of the screen In some cases, it briefly stays, then animates/jumps as if trying to reposition itself It feels like the whole layout is being moved rather than just the visible area adjusting I’ve already tried: Removing transforms on the header Forcing position: fixed with top: 0 Avoiding 100vh Testing without custom JavaScript related to viewport handling But the behavior remains the same: opening the keyboard causes the entire layout to shift. Is this expected behavior due to how iOS handles the visual viewport? Is there a reliable way to keep a fixed header truly fixed when the keyboard appears? Any insight or recommended approach would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

How to detect iPadOS Slide Over (floating window) from a browser-based web app using JavaScript?
What I am trying to do I am building a browser-based exam proctoring platform that runs in Safari and Chrome on iPad. I need to detect when a candidate opens another app or browser tab in Slide Over (the floating panel) while the exam is running in the background. This is a pure web app - no native wrapper, no MDM. What I've already tried I tried listening to window blur and focus events neither fires when Slide Over is triggered on Chrome. I tried document.visibilitychange - same result, it never fires during Slide Over. I tried the resize event but it is completely inconsistent on iPadOS Chrome. For Split View I am computing the ratio of window.innerWidth to window.screen.width and flagging below 0.80 as a likely split. That works. But Slide Over doesn't change the viewport at all - the exam tab stays full width in the background. So my ratio check is completely blind to it. My question Is there any JavaScript API, browser event, visualViewport property, or any other web-accessible signal that fires or changes when iPadOS enters Slide Over mode — specifically from a page running inside Safari or Chrome (WKWebView)? Even an indirect signal would help. If there's truly no way to detect this from a web page today, is there a recommended pattern or workaround that others have used? I've seen the interaction heartbeat approach (flagging when no pointerdown arrives for N seconds) but that's too noisy for an exam context where a candidate may be reading a long question.

Issue where images from local paths cannot be retrieved in Cordova Webview starting from iOS 26.4
Hello. I am using Cordova Webview to select a photo from the album, save it locally, and then pass the saved path to the web for display. It displayed correctly up to OS 26.3.x, but starting from OS 26.4.x, I am unable to retrieve images from local paths. Part displayed in Cordova Webview I have also confirmed the existence of the corresponding file in the src path. Are there any known bugs or solutions? Thank you.

In the iOS 26.4 beta version of WKWebView, it is impossible to establish an IP type WebSocket connection!
In iOS 26.4 beta, I noticed that when loading pages using WKWebView and using WebSocket to establish IP type addresses, the connection duration was several seconds and sometimes even failed to connect (normally, the connection duration should be in milliseconds). However, when establishing WebSocket connections using domain names, the connections were normal. Additionally, I discovered a special scenario: When directly establishing WebSocket connections using IP type addresses, it remained in the "connect" state. At the same time, based on Wireshark packet capture, it was found that no TCP connection was sent at this time. However, if two connections with the same address were established simultaneously, those two connections could successfully connect. This bug has seriously affected the use of my application service. Is there a chance that this version will solve the problem?

Safari “Prevent Cross‑Site Tracking”: Request for guidance on domain‑specific query parameter stripping and tracker classification criteria
Background We are investigating Safari’s Prevent Cross‑Site Tracking feature (part of Intelligent Tracking Prevention / Link Tracking Protection) on iOS and macOS (latest versions). We fully understand and respect Safari’s privacy objectives and are not requesting any whitelisting or relaxation of protections. Our goal is to understand how Safari determines when and where query parameter stripping is applied, so we can design a compliant and predictable implementation. Based on public WebKit and privacy documentation, it is understood that Safari’s tracking prevention behavior may be influenced by: Tracker classification sources such as: DuckDuckGo Tracker Radar https://github.com/duckduckgo/tracker-radar EasyList / EasyPrivacy https://easylist.to/easylist/easyprivacy.txt WebKit privacy architecture and heuristics, including behavior described in: WebKit “Private Browsing 2.0” / Link Tracking Protection documentation https://webkit.org/blog/15697/private-browsing-2-0/ Request for Guidance To help us align fully with Safari’s privacy model, we respectfully request guidance on: How Safari determines, at a domain or subdomain level, when to apply query parameter stripping under Prevent Cross‑Site Tracking. Whether evaluation may be influenced by: Tracker classification sources (e.g., domain reputation or known tracking endpoints) Runtime network behavior (such as cross‑site analytics requests) Subdomain‑specific context or historical behavior Whether Prevent Cross‑Site Tracking is evaluated: Per navigation event Per domain or subdomain Based on cumulative or runtime signals Whether Apple recommends specific design patterns or alternatives for handling essential, non‑tracking URL data in a way that is compatible with Safari’s privacy protections. Our objective is to design a solution that respects Safari’s intent and avoids reliance on fragile or unpredictable URL‑based behavior.

IOS Safari support for WebTransport
We're developing a service that requires webtransport support in the browser. Currently, the only browser that doesn't provide support is the IOS version of Safari. Our current way forward for client use is to flag iphone and ipad as non compliant and recommend either desktop use or android. Is there any ballpark date as to when WebTransport will be included in IOS Safari (- webkit supports webtransport)?

Cross-domain issue in wkwebview
Subject: Cross-Domain Access Behaviour in WKWebView – Clarification Required Description: We are facing a cross-domain issue in our iOS application where WKWebView loads content from one domain and attempts to access resources/data from another domain. Current Setup: App Platform: iOS WebView: WKWebView iOS Version: 26 Primary Domain: *.franconnectqa.net Data/Analytics Domain: analytics.franconnectdev.net SSL: Valid certificates configured ATS: Enabled Issue: When WKWebView loads content from franconnectqa.net, it attempts to access resources or analytics from analytics.franconnectdev.net, resulting in cross-domain restrictions. We would like to understand: Does WKWebView support cross-domain resource access by default? Are there any configuration settings that allow controlled cross-domain access? Are there known limitations regarding cookies, local storage, or session sharing across domains? Does WKWebView enforce additional restrictions beyond standard browser CORS policies? Are there recommended best practices for handling cross-domain scenarios in WKWebView? Expected Behavior: We want to determine whether: Cross-domain access is supported under certain configurations, OR The recommended approach is to align all resources under the same domain. Kindly provide guidance on the supported architecture and any configuration recommendations.

Folder-level image access permissions for browser-only web apps in iOS Safari
We are developing a mobile-first, browser-only web application that requires users to upload 20–200 images stored inside a single folder (for example, a merchant product directory). On iOS Safari: window.showDirectoryPicker() is not supported. is not supported. File System Access API is not available. Users must manually multi-select images from the Photos picker. This creates significant friction for bulk upload workflows. We are NOT requesting unrestricted file system access. We are asking whether a privacy-preserving, user-granted folder-scoped permission model is being considered for web applications. For example: User explicitly selects a folder. The web app receives scoped access only to that selected folder. Access is session-bound and revocable. No background or global storage access is required. Questions: Is folder-level access for web apps being considered for iOS Safari? Does installing a PWA provide any enhanced file access capability? Are there recommended best practices for handling bulk image uploads in browser-only iOS applications? Is there any roadmap alignment with the File System Access API standard? Our goal is to remain browser-only and maintain strict user privacy while improving usability for high-volume image workflows. Any clarification on intended platform direction would be appreciated.

Handling input type=date on iOS
I created a form field using: On Safari and Chrome desktop, it behaves as expected. Safari shows the current date in grey by default, and Chrome displays a format hint like dd.mm.yyyy, which is perfectly fine. On iOS, however, the field appears completely blank. I understand that the placeholder attribute is not part of the iOS date input behavior, which is technically fine. Still, it would be helpful if developers had the option to define a default display value. In the past, browsers prefilled date inputs, but many developers objected because they needed the field to be empty by default. I have searched extensively and tried several AI tools, and everywhere it says that this cannot be changed. Am I missing something, or is there any way to display a placeholder, the current date, or some kind of visual hint in iOS Safari? Right now, the empty field creates poor UX because users may overlook it. Since the field is required, this can easily lead to validation errors and additional friction. As a workaround, I used a CSS hack with input[type="date"]::before and a content attribute. I also added JavaScript to toggle a pseudo-placeholder value specifically for iOS. Is there a cleaner solution that avoids this workaround? Thanks in advance for your guidance.

evaluateJavaScript callback is significantly slow on macOS 26.2 for iOS App on Mac
Hello, After upgrading to macOS 26.2, I’ve noticed a significant performance regression when calling evaluateJavaScript in an iOS App running on Mac (WKWebView, Swift project). Observed behavior On macOS 26.2, the callback of evaluateJavaScript takes around 3 seconds to return. This happens not only for: evaluateJavaScript("navigator.userAgent") but also for simple or even empty scripts, for example: evaluateJavaScript("") On previous macOS versions, the same calls typically returned in ~200 ms. Additional testing I created a new, empty Objective-C project with a WKWebView and tested the same evaluateJavaScript calls. In the Objective-C project, the callback still returns in ~200 ms, even on macOS 26.2. Question Is this a known issue or regression related to: iOS Apps on Mac, Swift + WKWebView, or behavioral changes in evaluateJavaScript on macOS 26.2? Any information about known issues, internal changes, or recommended workarounds would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Test Code Swift class ViewController: UIViewController { private var tmpWebView: WKWebView? override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() // Do any additional setup after loading the view. setupUserAgent() } func setupUserAgent() { let t1 = CACurrentMediaTime() tmpWebView = WKWebView(frame: .zero) tmpWebView?.isInspectable = true tmpWebView?.evaluateJavaScript("navigator.userAgent") { [weak self] result, error in let t2 = CACurrentMediaTime() print("[getUserAgent] \(t2 - t1)s") self?.tmpWebView = nil } } } Test Code Objective-C - (void)scene:(UIScene *)scene willConnectToSession:(UISceneSession *)session options:(UISceneConnectionOptions *)connectionOptions { NSTimeInterval startTime = [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970]; WKWebView *webView = [[WKWebView alloc] init]; dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{ [webView evaluateJavaScript:@"navigator.userAgent" completionHandler:^(id result, NSError *error) { NSTimeInterval endTime = [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970]; NSLog(@"[getUserAgent]: %.2f s", (endTime - startTime)); }]; }); }

window.opener is null with WKWebview
My iOS app uses a WKWebView with a WKUIDelegate method (webView:createWebViewWithConfiguration:forNavigationAction:windowFeatures:) to handle popup windows. This works for most cases, but during OAuth flows on certain sites (e.g., canva.com), the popup WKWebView attempts to send results back to the main WKWebView using JavaScript like window.opener.postMessage(...). However, window.opener is always null in the popup, preventing the message from being posted and blocking login completion.I've researched this and found suggestions that it's by design, as WKWebView instances are isolated for security reasons. Has anyone encountered this and found a reliable workaround (e.g., bridging communication between the main and popup WKWebViews without relying on window.opener)?

Request for Native AJAX API Request Interception Support in WKWebView
Hello WebKit Team, I’m writing to ask if iOS provides a native way to intercept AJAX (XMLHttpRequest or fetch) calls inside WKWebView. On Android, this is handled via: shouldInterceptRequest(WebView view, WebResourceRequest request) but iOS currently seems to have no equivalent. We’ve tried: WKURLSchemeHandler → works only for custom schemes URLProtocol with WKProcessPool → unreliable for AJAX in WebView JavaScript injection → partial and unofficial Could you please clarify: Is there a recommended native approach to intercept AJAX requests? If not supported, is it planned for future releases? Any official workaround or guidance? This is critical for debugging, analytics, and compliance in hybrid apps.

How to debug ios Webkit crash

iOS26 WKWebView:Remote page becomes unresponsive after loading local file
Subject: iOS 26 WKWebView: Remote Pages Become Unresponsive After Loading Local HTML Files Description We're experiencing a critical issue with WKWebView in a React Native 0.64.3 application where remote web pages become completely unresponsive after loading local HTML files in iOS 26. It works well before iOS26. Environment: React Native 0.64.3 iOS 26.0 Xcode 26.0.1 Using custom WKWebView implementations in Native modules Problem Details App loads local HTML files using loadFileURL:allowingReadAccessToURL: Later, when loading remote pages via loadRequest:, the remote pages load successfully but become unresponsive to user interactions This occurs even when using different WKWebView instances The issue is reproducible 100% of the time once a local file has been loaded Restarting the app and loading remote pages directly works fine Code Example: // Loading local file (works fine) [self.webView loadFileURL:localFileURL allowingReadAccessToURL:accessURL]; // Later, loading remote page (loads but becomes unresponsive) NSURLRequest *request = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:remoteURL]; [self.webView loadRequest:request]; What We've Tried: Using different WKWebView instances for local vs remote content Comprehensive cleanup in dealloc (removing all user scripts and message handlers) Loading blank HTML before switching to remote content Using shared WKProcessPool (understanding its limitations in iOS 15+) Ensuring proper decisionHandler management in navigation delegates Resetting WKWebView configuration settings Clearing cookies and cache between loads Using loadFileRequest:allowingReadAccessToURL: instead of loadFileURL: Key Observations: The remote page renders correctly and network requests complete No JavaScript errors in console The view hierarchy appears normal in Debug View Hierarchy Touch events seem to be delivered but not processed by the web content Questions: Has Apple introduced new security restrictions in iOS 26 that affect the transition from file:// URLs to http:// URLs? Are there specific WKWebView configuration changes required for React Native applications in iOS 26? Could this be related to the React Native bridge or JavaScript context persistence? Any insights or workarounds would be greatly appreciated, as this is blocking our iOS 26 compatibility.

WKWebView Crashes on iOS During YouTube Playlist Playback
I’m encountering a consistent crash in WebKit when using WKWebView to play a YouTube playlist in my iOS app. Playback starts successfully, but the web process terminates during the second video in the playlist. This only occurs on physical devices, not in the simulator. Here’s a simplified Swift example of my setup: import SwiftUI import WebKit struct ContentView: View { private let playlistID = "PLig2mjpwQBZnghraUKGhCqc9eAy0UbpDN" var body: some View { YouTubeWebView(playlistID: playlistID) .edgesIgnoringSafeArea(.all) } } struct YouTubeWebView: UIViewRepresentable { let playlistID: String func makeUIView(context: Context) -> WKWebView { let config = WKWebViewConfiguration() config.allowsInlineMediaPlayback = true let webView = WKWebView(frame: .zero, configuration: config) webView.scrollView.isScrollEnabled = true let html = """ <!doctype html> <html> <head> <meta name="viewport" content="initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0"> <style>body,html{height:100%;margin:0;background:#000}iframe{width:100%;height:100%;border:0}</style> </head> <body> <iframe src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/videoseries?list=\(playlistID)&controls=1&rel=0&playsinline=1&iv_load_policy=3" frameborder="0" allow="encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; fullscreen" webkit-playsinline allowfullscreen ></iframe> </body> </html> """ webView.loadHTMLString(html, baseURL: nil) return webView } func updateUIView(_ uiView: WKWebView, context: Context) {} } #Preview { ContentView() } Observed behavior: First video plays without issue. Web process crashes when the second video in the playlist starts. Console logs show WebProcessProxy::didClose and repeated memory status messages. Using ProcessAssertion or background activity does not prevent the crash. Only occurs on physical devices; simulators do not reproduce the issue. Questions: Is there something I should change or add in my WKWebView setup or HTML/iframe to prevent the crash when playing the second video in a playlist on physical iOS devices? Is there an officially supported way to limit memory or prevent WebKit from terminating the web process during multi-video playback? Are there recommended patterns for playing YouTube playlists in a WKWebView on iOS without risking crashes? Any tips for debugging or configuring WKWebView to make it more stable for continuous playlist playback? Thanks in advance for any guidance!

IOS 26 new Feature Flag? What is a „related quirk“?
It‘s called Track Configuration API found in the iOS 26.0 Public Beta 5. No explanation anywhere on the web Or release notes, it’s not mentioned anywhere. I‘m very interested in new tracking innovations. And another small thing I‘ve never found out, what is „fingerprint related quirk“ is that an insider joke Or something? I don‘t know it‘s actions. MediaRecorder as PWA on iOS
Hey, very strange problem I have on iOS when shared web as an app (pwa) to home screen. Whenever I use it via safari browser on iPhone, it works 100% fine every time. However, when I put it as an app on home screen, first time I open it it works fine, when i close it and reopen again, it just doesnt start recording. I have to restart my phone for it to work. So it works one time, I guess somehow it doesnt end stream or something, but in code I've tried all the possible ways to close and clean the track. tried GPT, Claude, Gemini solutions. nothing worked, it just works 1 time as PWA. my last hope is someone else encountered this issue and may try to help me ? https://pastebin.com/85i2L2vH

Hello, After upgrading to macOS 26.2, I’ve noticed a significant performance regression when calling evaluateJavaScript in an iOS App running on Mac (WKWebView, Swift project). Observed behavior On macOS 26.2, the callback of evaluateJavaScript takes around 3 seconds to return. This happens not only for: evaluateJavaScript("navigator.userAgent") but also for simple or even empty scripts, for example: evaluateJavaScript("") On previous macOS versions, the same calls typically returned in ~200 ms. Additional testing I created a new, empty Objective-C project with a WKWebView and tested the same evaluateJavaScript calls. In the Objective-C project, the callback still returns in ~200 ms, even on macOS 26.2. Question Is this a known issue or regression related to: iOS Apps on Mac, Swift + WKWebView, or behavioral changes in evaluateJavaScript on macOS 26.2? Any information about known issues, internal changes, or recommended workarounds would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Test Code Swift class ViewController: UIViewController { private var tmpWebView: WKWebView? override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() // Do any additional setup after loading the view. setupUserAgent() } func setupUserAgent() { let t1 = CACurrentMediaTime() tmpWebView = WKWebView(frame: .zero) tmpWebView?.isInspectable = true tmpWebView?.evaluateJavaScript("navigator.userAgent") { [weak self] result, error in let t2 = CACurrentMediaTime() print("[getUserAgent] \(t2 - t1)s") self?.tmpWebView = nil } } } Test Code Objective-C - (void)scene:(UIScene *)scene willConnectToSession:(UISceneSession *)session options:(UISceneConnectionOptions *)connectionOptions { NSTimeInterval startTime = [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970]; WKWebView *webView = [[WKWebView alloc] init]; dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(), ^{ [webView evaluateJavaScript:@"navigator.userAgent" completionHandler:^(id result, NSError *error) { NSTimeInterval endTime = [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970]; NSLog(@"[getUserAgent]: %.2f s", (endTime - startTime)); }]; }); }

iOS 26 WKWebView renders same HTML with smaller font size [closed]
I have an iOS app that generates and renders a custom HTML document inside a UIWebView. After updating a device to iOS 26, the same HTML is rendered with noticeably smaller fonts compared to previous iOS versions. No code or HTML changes were made. Context HTML is generated dynamically and rendered in a UIWebView The HTML is embedded inside a custom XML wrapper The issue happens only on iOS 26 Earlier iOS versions render the font size correctly

window.opener is null with WKWebview

We have an iphone app that has an embedded webview using webkit, and we found the app crashes when we navigate to an specifc internal website. When I opened the ips file I see this stacktrace on the com.apple.main-thread WebCore::JSDOMRect::subspaceForImpl(JSC::VM&) WebCore::JSDOMRect::create(JSC::Structure*, WebCore::JSDOMGlobalObject*, WTF::Ref<WebCore::DOMRect, WTF::RawPtrTraits<WebCore::DOMRect>, WTF::DefaultRefDerefTraits<WebCore::DOMRect>>&&) WebCore::toJSNewlyCreated(JSC::JSGlobalObject*, WebCore::JSDOMGlobalObject*, WTF::Ref<WebCore::DOMRect, WTF::RawPtrTraits<WebCore::DOMRect>, WTF::DefaultRefDerefTraits<WebCore::DOMRect>>&&) JSC::JSValue WebCore::CloneDeserializer::readDOMRect<WebCore::DOMRect>() WebCore::CloneDeserializer::readTerminal() WebCore::CloneDeserializer::deserialize() WebCore::SerializedScriptValue::deserialize(JSC::JSGlobalObject&, JSC::JSGlobalObject*, WTF::Vector<WTF::Ref<WebCore::MessagePort, WTF::RawPtrTraits<WebCore::MessagePort>, WTF::DefaultRefDerefTrait WebCore::SerializedScriptValue::deserialize(JSC::JSGlobalObject&, JSC::JSGlobalObject*, WebCore::SerializationErrorMode, bool*) WebCore::SerializedScriptValue::deserialize(OpaqueJSContext const*, OpaqueJSValue const**) API::SerializedScriptValue::deserialize(WebCore::SerializedScriptValue&) ScriptMessageHandlerDelegate::didPostMessage(WebKit::WebPageProxy&, WebKit::FrameInfoData&&, API::ContentWorld&, WebCore::SerializedScriptValue&) WebKit::WebUserContentControllerProxy::didPostMessage(WTF::ObjectIdentifierGeneric<WebKit::WebPageProxyIdentifierType, WTF::ObjectIdentifierMainThreadAccessTraits<unsigned long long>, unsigned lon WebKit::WebUserContentControllerProxy::didReceiveMessage(IPC::Connection&, IPC::Decoder&) IPC::MessageReceiverMap::dispatchMessage(IPC::Connection&, IPC::Decoder&) WebKit::WebProcessProxy::dispatchMessage(IPC::Connection&, IPC::Decoder&) WebKit::WebProcessProxy::didReceiveMessage(IPC::Connection&, IPC::Decoder&) IPC::Connection::dispatchMessage(WTF::UniqueRef<IPC::Decoder>) IPC::Connection::dispatchIncomingMessages() WTF::RunLoop::performWork() WTF::RunLoop::performWork(void*) __CFRUNLOOP_IS_CALLING_OUT_TO_A_SOURCE0_PERFORM_FUNCTION__ __CFRunLoopDoSource0 __CFRunLoopDoSources0 __CFRunLoopRun CFRunLoopRunSpecific GSEventRunModal -[UIApplication _run] UIApplicationMain main start I assume something is crashing after deserializing a JSDomRect. This is crashing on an Iphone 13 with os 18.6.2 but this doesn't crash on iphone 11 os 26.0 I'm executing the app from xcode and I'm not able to see the stacktrace listed before in xcode, to be able to see variables and to understand what is being deserialized. I've also tried using safari mac develop, but safari stops debugging as soon as the app crashes. I've also tried attaching a remote process into the webkit I've downloaded from here https://webkit.org/getting-the-code/ but didn't have luck so far. Do you know how can I debug what's causing the crash?

iOS26 WKWebView:Remote page becomes unresponsive after loading local file
