Safari Web Extension - ES6 Module Imports Not Working After Enabling "type": "module"
I'm trying to use ES6 module imports in a Safari Web Extension, but despite enabling "type": "module" in the manifest, imports are not functioning as expected. Specifically when working with a project structure that includes multiple directories. A root directory containing the manifest.json and main entry point scripts A scripts/ folder housing core functionality modules A common/ directory for shared utilities, constants, and helper functions A background.js file in the root that attempts to import from these various directories When trying to import modules from the scripts/ and common/ directories into my background.js, I'm encountering complete import failures. How can I correctly implement cross-directory module imports in Safari Web Extensions?

In Safari's JavaScript geolocation, is altitude based on MSL or WGS84 ellipsoid?
Hello all, I'm trying to retrieve geolocation data on the web, but I'm having trouble with the altitude value, which seems to differ from what I get on Android. When using navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition in Safari, is the altitude value based on mean sea level, or is it ellipsoidal altitude based on the WGS84 ellipsoid? altitude (WebKit JS): https://developer.apple.com/documentation/webkitjs/coordinates/1631861-altitude altitude (Core Location): https://developer.apple.com/documentation/corelocation/cllocation/altitude ellipsoidalAltitude (Core Location): https://developer.apple.com/documentation/corelocation/cllocation/ellipsoidalaltitude If anyone has any insight into this topic I would greatly appreciate it!

Unable to Add Non-Standard Headers Using Declarative Net Request Rule (DNR) in Safari
We’re encountering an issue when trying to add non-standard headers to outgoing requests using Declarative Net Request (DNR) rules in our Safari Web Extension. Tested on macOS 15.4 with Safari 18.4. Specifically, when attempting to add a custom header such as "X-Custom-Header" using a DNR rule, the header does not appear in the request. We are able to add standard headers like "Authorization" and "Cookie" to the request successfully using the same method. This behavior suggests that Safari may be filtering or blocking non-standard headers when set via DNR rules, unlike other browsers. In Chrome and Firefox, the same rule adds the "X-Custom-Header" header without any issue. We are looking for assistance in fixing these issues and having our Safari Extension function the same as it does in Firefox and Chrome.

Extension in Safari Fails Auth in Non-Default Profile When Using Cookie-Based Mechanism
Hello, We are developing a Safari Web Extension that uses a cookie-based authentication mechanism. The extension makes a request to an endpoint e.g. /login, and this endpoint expects a cookie (e.g., sessionId) to be included with the request. Everything works correctly when running in the default Safari profile. However, when I install and run the same extension in a new, non-default profile, the behaviour changes: The request to /login is still made The cookie sent is not as expected As a result, the response returns null user data I confirmed that logging into the site in the new profile (in a tab) works, but the extension does not appear to share the session/cookie state with the login tab We’ve tried explicitly setting "credentials": "include" in the request but that still didn’t share the cookie in the extension context in the non-default profile. My questions: Is there away to allow cookie-based session sharing between a tab and an extension in non-default profiles in safari? Would switching to a token-based auth mechanism (e.g., Bearer tokens ) be the recommended workaround? I’d appreciate any insights or guidance from those who’ve run into similar issues.
 Thanks in advance!

Safari doesn't seem to respect cache-control on fetch redirects
I am calling fetch with a POST on page1 in Safari. No special cache parameters on the fetch call. The response from the server is a 303 redirect to page2 The second page -- page2 -- is in my browser's cache with cache-control "public, max-age=31536000, immutable". For some reason, the page2 redirect is causing a server hit to re-GET the second page every time instead of pulling from cache. If I instead directly get the second page by doing a fetch on page2, there is no server hit. If I do this on Chrome or Firefox, it behaves as I would expect, pulling page2 from the cache with no server hit. In case it matters, the fetch is coming from within an iFrame. Also, if I change the original POST to a GET, the problem still happens. I am using a pretty old version of Safari on my Mac, so I could chalk it up to that, but I am getting the same behavior with Safari on my iPhone with iOS 18.3.2 Any ideas? Thanks.

Can I use allowFileAccessFromFileURLs to access local html file in my Project and not get appStorereview
We are currently implementing the payment flow, and for handling payment details — including card entry and validation — we are utilizing a WKWebView. The webview securely loads the payment provider’s page, ensuring sensitive information such as card numbers are entered and validated directly within the web context. I’d like to clarify that this change has not yet been released to Production. As part of a feature enhancement to our existing payment flow, we are transitioning to a new payment vendor, SnapPay. While trying to load the SnapPay URL embedded within an iFrame in our iOS app, I observed the following error in the Xcode console. While this error may be generic, I wanted to highlight it: 825a18 - [pageProxyID=7, webPageID=8, PID=67346] WebPageProxy::didFailLoadForFrame: frameID=24, isMainFrame=0, domain=NSURLErrorDomain, code=-999 Upon investigating, we compared the headers from our existing payment URL and SnapPay's URL, and found that SnapPay includes the following Content-Security-Policy (CSP) header: Content-Security-Policy: frame-ancestors ... "Content-Security-Policy" value="default-src 'self'; script-src 'self' https://hcaptcha.com https://.hcaptcha.com https://code.jquery.com https://www.gstatic.com https://code.jquery.com/jquery-3.3.1.min.js https://test.lightbox.cardx.com/v1/lightbox.min.js https://www.ssa.gov/accessibility/andi/ https://c.evidon.com 'unsafe-inline' 'unsafe-eval'; style-src 'self' https://hcaptcha.com https://.hcaptcha.com https://fonts.googleapis.com/css https://stage.snappayglobal.com/Resource/ https://www.ssa.gov/accessibility/andi/andi.css 'unsafe-inline'; img-src 'self' data: https:; font-src 'self' *.googleapis.com *.gstatic.com ; connect-src 'self' https://demo1.cditechnology.com https:; form-action https://hcaptcha.com https: 'self' *.ipg-online.com secure.bluepay.com https://test.api.lightbox.cardx.com https://3ds-acs.test.modirum.com/ https://demo1.cditechnology.com/; frame-ancestors https://snappaydirect-perf.fiserv.com 'self' file: https: http; frame-src .snappayglobal.com 'self' https://hcaptcha.com https://.hcaptcha.com https: https://www.google.com .ipg-online.com secure.bluepay.com https://.cardconnect.com https://test.api.lightbox.cardx.com/ https://test.lightbox.cardx.com https://paywithcardx.com/payment/auth.cgi securepayments.cardpointe.com *.cardpointe.com https://3ds-acs.test.modirum.com/ https://www.yokohamatire.com http://uat1-txt.ad.portal.texas.gov https://uat1-txt.ad.portal.texas.gov " After multiple working sessions with the SnapPay team, we were able to confirm that when they disable CSP or remove the frame-ancestors directive, the iFrame loads successfully within our app. However, SnapPay cannot change on their CSP. To enable the iFrame to load in the iOS app, we added the following line of code: webView.configuration.preferences.setValue(true, forKey: "allowFileAccessFromFileURLs"). This resolved the issue with loading the iFrame. Note: the file being loaded is a local .html file,. Before submitting this update to the App Store, I’d like to confirm whether this usage of allowFileAccessFromFileURLs is acceptable for App Store review. I wanted to confirm that with this change is there a security concern for WKWebview?

Safari Extension Error: “Non-persistent background content cannot listen to webRequest events.” after macOS 15.4 / Safari 18.4 Update
Safari Extension Error: “Non-persistent background content cannot listen to webRequest events.” after macOS 15.4 / Safari 18.4 Update We’re seeing the following error in the Safari Extensions tab after updating to macOS 15.4 and Safari 18.4: “Non-persistent background content cannot listen to webRequest events.” This error did not appear prior to the update, and we haven’t found any official documentation stating that webRequest API is no longer supported in Safari. In our extension (Manifest V3), we are using the webRequest.onHeadersReceived callback to intercept response headers and read updated cookies. While the functionality itself still works as expected. we’re able to access the response headers and this error is now shown in the Extension settings page. We are not seeing this issue in other browsers (Chrome, Firefox) using the same Manifest V3 setup. Is there any plan to deprecate webRequest support in Manifest V3 for Safari? We’d appreciate any clarification or guidance on how to handle this going forward.

TLS re-negotiation fails with ios18.4
I'm running apache with following configuration. /cc require TLS client certificate / not require TLS client certificate Starting with ios 18.4, accessing /cc after / fails with following error: AH02261: Re-negotiation handshake failed, referer: https://www.example.com/... SSL Library Error: error:1417C0C7:SSL routines:tls_process_client_certificate:peer did not return a certificate -- No CAs known to server for verification? It seems like ios 18.4 does not support TLS re-negotiation. (It worked with ios 18.3 and before) Is this an expected behavior or a bug?

Preventing JavaScript from Stopping in Safari When It Goes into the Background
From a mail app or similar, when opening a webpage in Safari as an external browser, JavaScript on the webpage stops running if Safari goes into the background. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Sample code for the counter: Behavior: Upon returning from the background, the counter continues for about 7-8 seconds but does not progress further. For example, if Safari is kept in the background for about 20 seconds and then brought back, the counter stops at around 7-8 seconds and only resumes counting after returning to the foreground. Expectation: The counter should continue running even if Safari goes into the background.

iOS26 Safari rendering bug even on latest beta 3
I am testing stuff on a website, and it worked well on any mobile browser till iOS18. Now that I am testing iOS26, even with the latest BETA (3) everything works smoothly on any other mobile browser but Safari. Previously I had the bug, which now has been patched, for status-bar, which was flickering too, but popover and page issue seems still there. I have persistent popover and ajax navigation, and both are rendering with bugs and fouc while view/page changes. Example: If I have an element which must stay on its place and its width is 100vw: while page changes it blinks, shrinks, flicker and jumps on rendering, while it simply must stay as is.. Animations and page transitions work smoothly on Chrome mobile (latest iOS 26 beta 3) , while breaking on Safari. I did open a feedback FB18328720, but seems no one caring. Any idea guys? ** Video of the bug (which is huge!) : ** https://youtube.com/shorts/rY3oxUwDd7w?feature=share Cheers

iOS share extension cannot open app from Chrome
Our UI-less share extension (com.apple.services) appears in Safari and Chrome. We raise a popup "Open in (app)..." via the Action.js script document.location.href = urlScheme://... in Safari. However, in Chrome, while our extension executes, parses the URL item attachment from Chrome, it never triggers that popup or opens our app. How can a UI-less share extension open our app from Chrome? Is the accepted practice, despite guidelines, turning the com.apple.ui-services view controller invisible and auto-openURLing? Several apps on the store appear to do this, immediately popping their app without any confirmation dialog or UI in both Safari and Chrome. https://stackoverflow.com/a/79369242

ASWebAuthenticationSession cookies and Safari
Hi! I'm trying to implement ASWebAuthenticationSession to log in to my app via the web app backend. However, I'm a bit confused about the cookies that this has access to. When I set prefersEphemeralWebBrowserSession=false it does not seem to use the cookies from Safari. Or at least, I'm logged into my web app in Safari, but when I use ASWebAuthenticationSession I still have to log in again. Does it not share session cookies with Safari? I did notice that if I don't use an ephemeral session, once I log out and try to log back in my app does automatically log me in but that's actually unhelpful in my opinion because now I have no way to clear that session because it only lives in the ASWebAuthenticationSession context. If that's the case I may as well use the ephemeral session then because it seems to have only drawbacks.

The first four tab bars of Safari are hidden
There is no problem with the content display of each tab, but the tab bar is completely buggy. If you open 5 or more tabs and browse tabs after the 5, the first 4 tab bars will be completely blacked out, and you don't even know how many tabs you have. If you click on the place where the tab title probably exists, the tab is displayed as if the partial display of the tab bar has been restored. There is no problem with content display. But because it is unclear what tab is open, the browsing experience is at its lowest. If you switch to the tab after the 5th, the first 4 will return to the blackout state again. Of course, it is the latest software configuration at the moment. There is no shortage of memory at 24GB. I recently started developing a Safari extension with AppExtension, but is that due to it?

iOS Safari - Input element is unresponsive when modifying DOM via a touch event (touchstart, touchmove, touchend, etc)
This is a really strange issue on iOS Safari. Under certain conditions a basic input element will not be focusable or show the on screen keyboard. I can reproduce the issue with a very simple HTML file by dynamically adding an anchor element with an href during a touch event. If you add a different element or an anchor without an href, there is no issue. Similarly, if you apply the same listener to a click event there is no issue. Reproducible in iOS Simulator 17.2 and 18.1 This HTML/JS showcases the problem: <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="utf-8" /> <title>InputIssue</title> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1" /> </head> <body> <div id="parent"> <input type="text" name="test" /> <div id="child"></div> </div> <script> document.addEventListener("touchstart", () => { const child = document.getElementById("child"); if (!child) return; while (child.firstChild) { child.removeChild(child.firstChild); } const link = document.createElement("a"); link.href = "https://test.com"; link.textContent = "test"; child.appendChild(link); }); </script> </body> </html>

Notification sound (Web or PWA)
Good morning fellow developers, For a while i am struggeling with providing sound to my users on IOS (Safari on Mac is no problem and every other device is not a problem) (we have an existing phone system and made a chat as well), the case is very simple: the notification sound is only for users who are logged in and online for chat. i have tried multiple things: Audio play with javascript (start with mute, play when user clicks a button so the sound is familiar, play when user clicks a button and directly pause it and continue when needed) PWA: the dashboard has been made available as pwa and notifications using google firebase. The popup does show for notifcations to be allowed (and receiving the notifications does work on any other device) But any IOS device cannot register. The information i find is that notifications were supported with 16.4 or higher but also have been deprecated around IOS 17, auto play is not allowed. We have an app in development for our product as well were we will have a notification which will handle this, but that is not the solution we can use now. Long story, short question: is it still somehow possible to push a notification to the user when using the PWA or play a sound in the browser (based on an ajax function). The app/website wont be in the background, so it will always be on the screen. Languages we use: html/javascript (mostly vanilla)/php

This is generated in the onvalidatemerchant event handler, and passed into session.completeMerchantValidation. Using a sandbox account with linked cards, the next thing that happens is a "payment not completed" message in the ApplePay popup on the page, and the oncancel event is hit Inspecting the event, I don't see anything that hints at the issue. There is a sessionError object, but its code is "unknown" and the info object is empty.

ssl error iPadOS 18.4 for self-signed certificate
Our app is an enterprise app via MDM. We are experiencing an issue in iPadOS 18.4 when loading an internal HTTPS server via WKWebView in a hybrid iOS app. Our server uses a self-signed certificate but lacks the digitalSignature usage in its Key Usage extension. (Currently we have no chance to change the server's certificate) We override webView:didReceiveAuthenticationChallenge:completionHandler: to trust the certificate: completionHandler(NSURLSessionAuthChallengeUseCredential, credential); This "completionHandler" works in previous 18.3.2 , but not work in 18.4. May I know is there any changes in 18.4 for the https certification? Why this delegate not work? What we can do to ignore this ssl error and get connection? Thanks in advance, look forward for your reply.

On Safari the search bar does not update after downloading a file
The icon (new file downloaded) inside the search bar on Safari does not display after downloading a file. To update the search bar and display the icon you have to open the search bar and then close it again to see that a new file was downloaded.
