how to extract the hostname from a https/tls request in NEFilterSocketFlow
Hi guys, I try to create a content filter app by using network extension api. When it comes to a https/tls remote endpoint, the remoteEndpoint.hostname will always be "" instead of the actual hostname. Getting WIFI SSID
Greetings I'm trying to get on iPad the SSID from the wifi I'm connected to. For that, I added the wifi entitlement and I'm requesting permission to the user for Location. Once I have it, I'm using the function CNCopySupportedInterfaces to get the interfaces, but I can only receive the en0, which using the method CNCopyCurrentNetworkInfo returns nil. I also tried using the NEHotspotNetwork.fetchCurrent and the SSID keeps being nil. So right now I'm drawing a blank. Is there any way to make it work? Thanks.

Transparent proxy crash on macOS 15.5
Hello! I develop transparent proxy based application, and I'm receiving a lot of crash reports from macOS 15.5 for crash in __88-[NEExtensionAppProxyProviderContext setInitialFlowDivertControlSocket:extraValidation:]_block_invoke.90 when stopping. Even very old versions of my software started crashing on macOS 15.5. I checked my extension that it correctly calls setTunnelNetworkSettings:nil on proxy stop, but crash is still here. Does anybody else have this problem? Do you know any workaround for it?

URLSessionDownloadTaskDelegate functions not called when using URLSession.download(for:), but works when using URLSession.downloadTask(with:)
I'm struggling to understand why the async-await version of URLSession download task APIs do not call the delegate functions, whereas the old non-async version that returns a reference to the download task works just fine. URLSession download looping indefinitely until it times out
Hi, I’m trying to download a remote file in the background, but I keep getting a strange behaviour where URLSession download my file indefinitely during a few minutes, without calling urlSession(_:downloadTask:didFinishDownloadingTo:) until the download eventually times out. To find out that it’s looping, I’ve observed the total bytes written on disk by implementing urlSession(_:downloadTask:didWriteData:totalBytesWritten:totalBytesExpectedToWrite:). Note that I can't know the size of the file. The server is not able to calculate the size. Below is my implementation. The download works fine in Chrome/Safari/Chrome or Postman. My code used to work a couple of weeks before, so I expect something has changed on the server side, but I can’t find what, and I don’t get much help from the guys on the server side. Has anyone an idea of what’s going on?

How to Keep Cellular Data Active While Connected to a Local Hotspot for File Transfer?
Hi all, I’m developing a companion iOS app that connects to a device-created Wi-Fi hotspot to transfer videos or other files WebSocket. The challenge is: once the iPhone connects to this hotspot, it loses internet access because iOS routes all traffic through Wi-Fi. However, I’d like to keep the iPhone’s cellular data active and usable while staying connected to the local hotspot — so the app can access cloud APIs, or the user can continue using other apps that require internet access. I understand that iOS prioritizes Wi-Fi over cellular, but are there any supported workarounds or patterns (e.g., MFi programs, local-only Wi-Fi access, NEHotspotConfiguration behavior, etc.) that : • Using Wi-Fi only for local communication; • cellular to remain active for internet access. Any insights or Apple-recommended best practices would be greatly appreciated — especially any official references regarding MFi Accessory setup or NEHotspotConfiguration behavior in this context. 5G Network Slicing and NetworkExtension
Hello, I am writing a NetworkExtension VPN using custom protocol and our client would like to able to use 5G network slice on the VPN, is this possible at all? From Apple's documentation, I found the following statement: If both network slicing and VPN are configured for an app or device, the VPN connection takes precedence over the network slice, rendering the network slice unused. Is it possible to assign a network slice on a NetworkExtension-based VPN and let the VPN traffic uses the assign network slice? Many thanks

NEHotspotNetwork headaches
I'm trying to use NEHotspotNetwork to configure an IoT. I've read all the issues that have plagued other developers when using this framework, and I was under the impression that bugs were filed and fixed. Here are my issues in hopes that someone can catch my bug, or has finally figured this out and it's not a bug in the framework with no immediate fix on the horizon. KiniStatusBanner.shared.dismiss(after: 2.5) self.cleanupHotspot() } As you can see, one can't just use NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.apply and has to double-check to make sure that it actually succeeds, by checking to see if the SSID desired, matches the one that the device is using. Ok, but about 50% of the time, the call to NEHotspotNetwork.fetchCurrent gives me this error: NEHotspotNetwork nehelper sent invalid result code [1] for Wi-Fi information request Well, there is a workaround for that randomness too. At some point before calling this code, one can: let locationManager = CLLocationManager() locationManager.requestWhenInUseAuthorization() That eliminates the NEHotspotNetwork nehelper sent invalid result code [1] for Wi-Fi information request BUT... three issues. The user is presented with an authorization alert: Allow "Kini" to use your location? This app needs access to you Wi-Fi name to connect to your Kini device. Along with a map with a location pin on it. This gives my users a completely wrong impression, especially for a device/app where we promise users not to track their location. They actually see a map with their location pinned on it, implying something that would freak out anyone who was expecting no tracking. I understand why an authorization is normally required, but since all we are getting is our own IoT's SSID, there should be no need for an authorization for this, and no map associated with the request. Again, they are accessing my IoT's network, NOT their home/location Wi-Fi SSID. My app already knows and specifies that network, and all I am trying to do is to work around a bug that makes it look like I have a successful return from NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.apply() when in fact the network I was looking for wasn't even on. Not only do I get instances where the network doesn't connect, and result codes show no errors, but I also get instances where I get an alert that says that the network is unreachable, yet my IoT shows that the app is connected to its Wi-Fi. On the iOS device, I go to the Wi-Fi settings, and see that I am on the IoT's network. So basically, sometimes I connect, but the frameworks says that there is no connection, and sometimes it reports a connection when there is none. As you can see in the code, I call cleanupHotspot() to make the iOS device get off of my temp Wi-Fi SSID. This is the code: func cleanupHotspot() { NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.removeConfiguration(forSSID: ssid) } That code gets called by the above code when things aren't as I expect and need to cleanup. And I also call it when the user dismisses the viewcontroller that is attempting to make the connection. It doesn't always work. I get stuck on the tempo SSID, unless I go through this whole thing again: try to make the connection again, this time it succeeds quickly, and then I can disconnect. Any ideas? I'm on iOS18.5, and have tried this on multiple iPhones including 11, 13 and 16.

On FTP
Questions about FTP crop up from time-to-time here on DevForums. In most cases I write a general “don’t use FTP” response, but I don’t have time to go into all the details. I’ve created this post as a place to collect all of those details, so I can reference them in other threads. IMPORTANT Apple’s official position on FTP is: All our FTP APIs have been deprecated, and you should avoid using deprecated APIs. Apple has been slowly removing FTP support from the user-facing parts of our system. The most recent example of this is that we removed the ftp command-line tool in macOS 10.13. You should avoid the FTP protocol and look to adopt more modern alternatives. The rest of this post is an informational explanation of the overall FTP picture. This post is locked so I can keep it focused. If you have questions or comments, please do create a new thread in the App & System Services > Networking subtopic and I’ll respond there. Don’t Use FTP FTP is a very old and very crufty protocol. Certain things that seem obvious to us now — like being able to create a GUI client that reliably shows a directory listing in a platform-independent manner — aren’t possible to do in FTP. However, by far the biggest problem with FTP is that it provides no security [1]. Specifically, the FTP protocol: Provides no on-the-wire privacy, so anyone can see the data you transfer Provides no client-authenticates-server authentication, so you have no idea whether you’re talking to the right server Provides no data integrity, allowing an attacker to munge your data in transit Transfers user names and passwords in the clear Using FTP for anonymous downloads may be acceptable (see the explanation below) but most other uses of FTP are completely inappropriate for the modern Internet. IMPORTANT You should only use FTP for anonymous downloads if you have an independent way to check the integrity of the data you’ve downloaded. For example, if you’re downloading a software update, you could use code signing to check its integrity. If you don’t check the integrity of the data you’ve downloaded, an attacker could substitute a malicious download instead. This would be especially bad in, say, the software update case. These fundamental problems with the FTP protocol mean that it’s not a priority for Apple. This is reflected in the available APIs, which is the subject of the next section. FTP APIs Apple provides two FTP APIs: All Apple platforms provide FTP downloads via URLSession. Most Apple platforms (everything except watchOS) support CFFTPStream, which allows for directory listings, downloads, uploads, and directory creation. All of these FTP APIs are now deprecated: URLSession was deprecated for the purposes of FTP in the 2022 SDKs (macOS 13, iOS 16, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16, watchOS 9) [2]. CFFTPStream was deprecated in the 2016 SDKs (macOS 10.11, iOS 9, iPadOS 9, tvOS 9). CFFTPStream still works about as well as it ever did, which is not particularly well. Specifically: There is at least one known crashing bug (r. 35745763), albeit one that occurs quite infrequently. There are clear implementation limitations — like the fact that CFFTPCreateParsedResourceListing assumes a MacRoman text encoding (r. 7420589) — that won’t be fixed. If you’re looking for an example of how to use these APIs, check out SimpleFTPSample. Note This sample hasn’t been updated since 2013 and is unlikely to ever be updated given Apple’s position on FTP. The FTP support in URLSession has significant limitations: It only supports FTP downloads; there’s no support for uploads or any other FTP operations. It doesn’t support resumable FTP downloads [3]. It doesn’t work in background sessions. That prevents it from running FTP downloads in the background on iOS. It’s only supported in classic loading mode. See the usesClassicLoadingMode property and the doc comments in <Foundation/NSURLSession.h>. If Apple’s FTP APIs are insufficient for your needs, you’ll need to write or acquire your own FTP library. Before you do that, however, consider switching to an alternative protocol. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of importing a large FTP library into your code base, you might as well import a library for a better protocol. The next section discusses some options in this space. Alternative Protocols There are numerous better alternatives to FTP: HTTPS is by far the best alternative to FTP, offering good security, good APIs on Apple platforms, good server support, and good network compatibility. Implementing traditional FTP operations over HTTPS can be a bit tricky. One possible way forward is to enable DAV extensions on the server. FTPS is FTP over TLS (aka SSL). While FTPS adds security to the protocol, which is very important, it still inherits many of FTP’s other problems. Personally I try to avoid this protocol. SFTP is a file transfer protocol that’s completely unrelated to FTP. It runs over SSH, making it a great alternative in many of the ad hoc setups that traditionally use FTP. Apple doesn’t have an API for either FTPS or SFTP, although on macOS you may be able to make some headway by invoking the sftp command-line tool. One of FTP’s implicit design goals was to provide cross-platform support that exposes the target platform. You can think of FTP as being kinda like telnet. When you telnet from Unix to VMS, it doesn’t aim to abstract away VMS commands, so that you can type Unix commands at the VMS prompt. Rather, you’re expected to run VMS commands. FTP is (a bit) like that. This choice made sense back when the FTP protocol was invented. Folks were expecting to use FTP via a command-line client, so there was a human in the loop. If they ran a command and it produced VMS-like output, that was fine because they knew that they were FTPing into a VMS machine. However, most users today are using GUI clients, and this design choice makes it very hard to create a general GUI client for FTP. Let’s consider the simple problem of getting the contents of a directory. When you send an FTP LIST command, the server would historically run the platform native directory list command and pipe the results back to you. To create a GUI client you have to parse that data to extract the file names. Doing that is a serious challenge. Indeed, just the first step, working out the text encoding, is a challenge. Many FTP servers use UTF-8, but some use ISO-Latin-1, some use other standard encodings, some use Windows code pages, and so on. I say “historically” above because there have been various efforts to standardise this stuff, both in the RFCs and in individual server implementations. However, if you’re building a general client you can’t rely on these efforts. After all, the reason why folks continue to use FTP is because of it widespread support. [2] To quote the macOS 13 Ventura Release Notes: FTP is deprecated for URLSession and related APIs. Please adopt modern secure networking protocols such as HTTPS. IOS App tcp connect and local network permission
Recently, my application was having trouble connecting socket using TCP protocol after it was reinstalled. The cause of the problem was initially that I did not grant local network permissions when I reinstalled, I was aware of the problem, so socket connect interface worked fine after I granted permissions. However, the next time I repeat the previous operation, I also do not grant local network permissions, and then turn it back on in the Settings, and socket connect interfcae does not work properly (connect interface return errno 65, the system version and code have not changed). Fortunately, socket connect success after rebooting the phone, and more importantly, I was able to repeat the problem many times. So I want to know if the process between when I re-uninstall the app and deny local network permissions, and when I turn it back on in Settings, is that permissions have been granted normally, and not fake, and not required a reboot to reset something for socket coonnect to take effect.

Could not delete cookies on IOS18
Hello, I have encountered an issue with an iPhone 15PM with iOS 18.5. The NSHTTPCookieStorage failed to clear cookies, after clearing them, I was still able to retrieve them. Missing flows for content filter on macOS 15 Sequoia
We use as content filter in our app to monitor flows, we gather data about the flow and block flows deemed suspicious. Our content filter is activated/deactivated by a UI app but the flows are reported via XPC to a separate daemon process for analysis. As of macOS 15, we are seeing cases where flows are missing or flows are not received at all by the content filter. The behaviour is not consistent, some devices seem to receive flows normally but others don't. It appears Intel devices are much less prone to showing the problem, whereas Arm devices routinely exhibit missing flows. On macOS 14 or earlier, there is no sign of missing flows. Testing on earlier beta versions of macOS 15 did not appear to show the problem, however I can't rule out if issue was present but it wasn't spotted. Experimenting with simple examples of using a content filter (e.g. QNE2FilterMac) does not appear to reproduce the issue. Questions, What has changed between macOS 14 and 15 that could be the cause of the lack of flows? Is our approach to using an app activated content filter reporting to a daemon connected via XPC unsupported?

Extracting IP with swift on visionOS
Hey everyone, I’m developing an app for visionOS where I need to display the Apple Vision Pro’s current IP address. For this I’m using the following code, which works for iOS, macOS, and visionOS in the simulator. Only on a real Apple Vision Pro it’s unable to extract an IP. Could it be that visionOS currently doesn’t allow this? adhoc ipa, installed on iOS 18 devices, udp and tcp cannot access the local network, such as 17.25.11.128
I have read all the information and forum posts about local network, such as TN3179, etc., and have added NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription, but it does not solve my problem. The problem I encountered is described as follows: Device: iOS18.1.1 Signing method: automatic Xcode debug directly runs, and the app can access 17.25.11.128 normally. However, relase run or packaged into adhoc installation, this IP cannot be accessed. There is a phenomenon that the app package of the App Store can also be used. Our test team has few iOS18+ devices, and internal testing is not possible. Unable to Intercept Inbound Traffic on macOS Using Network Extensions
Hi all, I have a requirement to intercept and modify inbound connections on macOS. For example, if I’m running a server on TCP port 8080 on macOS, I want to intercept all traffic to and from this port. I’m open to working at the level of TCP flows or even raw Ethernet packets, depending on what’s feasible. I’m already successfully using NETransparentProxy to intercept outbound traffic, but I haven’t found a way to handle inbound connections using any of the Network Extension APIs. Is there any supported or alternative approach for intercepting inbound traffic (via NE, NKEs, PF, or something else)? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Ping without CFSockets
All of our uses of CFSockets have started causing crashes in iOS 16. They seem to be deprecated so we are trying to transition over to using the Network framework and NWConnection to try to fix the crashes. One of our uses of them is to ping a device on the local network to make sure it is there and online and provide a heartbeat status in logs as well as put the application into a disabled state if it is not available as it is critical to the functionality of the app. I know it is discouraged to disable any functionality based on the reachability of a resource but this is in an enterprise environment where the reachability of this device is mission critical. I've seen other people ask about the ability to ping with the Network framework and the answers I've found have said that this is not possible and pointed people to the SimplePing sample code but it turns out our existing ping code is already using this technique and it is crashing just like our other CFSocket usages, inside CFSocketInvalidate with the error BUG IN CLIENT OF LIBPLATFORM: Trying to recursively lock an os_unfair_lock. Is there any updated way to perform a ping without using the CFSocket APIs that now seem to be broken/unsupported on iOS 16?

Getting WIFI SSID
Greetings I'm trying to get on iPad the SSID from the wifi I'm connected to. For that, I added the wifi entitlement and I'm requesting permission to the user for Location. Once I have it, I'm using the function CNCopySupportedInterfaces to get the interfaces, but I can only receive the en0, which using the method CNCopyCurrentNetworkInfo returns nil. I also tried using the NEHotspotNetwork.fetchCurrent and the SSID keeps being nil. So right now I'm drawing a blank. Is there any way to make it work? Thanks.

Transparent proxy crash on macOS 15.5
Hello! I develop transparent proxy based application, and I'm receiving a lot of crash reports from macOS 15.5 for crash in __88-[NEExtensionAppProxyProviderContext setInitialFlowDivertControlSocket:extraValidation:]_block_invoke.90 when stopping. Even very old versions of my software started crashing on macOS 15.5. I checked my extension that it correctly calls setTunnelNetworkSettings:nil on proxy stop, but crash is still here. Does anybody else have this problem? Do you know any workaround for it?

URLSessionDownloadTaskDelegate functions not called when using URLSession.download(for:), but works when using URLSession.downloadTask(with:)
I'm struggling to understand why the async-await version of URLSession download task APIs do not call the delegate functions, whereas the old non-async version that returns a reference to the download task works just fine. URLSession download looping indefinitely until it times out
Hi, I’m trying to download a remote file in the background, but I keep getting a strange behaviour where URLSession download my file indefinitely during a few minutes, without calling urlSession(_:downloadTask:didFinishDownloadingTo:) until the download eventually times out. To find out that it’s looping, I’ve observed the total bytes written on disk by implementing urlSession(_:downloadTask:didWriteData:totalBytesWritten:totalBytesExpectedToWrite:). Note that I can't know the size of the file. The server is not able to calculate the size. Below is my implementation. My code used to work a couple of weeks before, so I expect something has changed on the server side, but I can’t find what, and I don’t get much help from the guys on the server side. Has anyone an idea of what’s going on?

How to Keep Cellular Data Active While Connected to a Local Hotspot for File Transfer?
Hi all, I’m developing a companion iOS app that connects to a device-created Wi-Fi hotspot to transfer videos or other files WebSocket. The challenge is: once the iPhone connects to this hotspot, it loses internet access because iOS routes all traffic through Wi-Fi. However, I’d like to keep the iPhone’s cellular data active and usable while staying connected to the local hotspot — so the app can access cloud APIs, or the user can continue using other apps that require internet access. I understand that iOS prioritizes Wi-Fi over cellular, but are there any supported workarounds or patterns (e.g., MFi programs, local-only Wi-Fi access, NEHotspotConfiguration behavior, etc.) that : • Using Wi-Fi only for local communication; • cellular to remain active for internet access. Any insights or Apple-recommended best practices would be greatly appreciated — especially any official references regarding MFi Accessory setup or NEHotspotConfiguration behavior in this context. 5G Network Slicing and NetworkExtension
Hello, I am writing a NetworkExtension VPN using custom protocol and our client would like to able to use 5G network slice on the VPN, is this possible at all? From Apple's documentation, I found the following statement: If both network slicing and VPN are configured for an app or device, the VPN connection takes precedence over the network slice, rendering the network slice unused. Is it possible to assign a network slice on a NetworkExtension-based VPN and let the VPN traffic uses the assign network slice? Many thanks

I'm trying to use NEHotspotNetwork to configure an IoT. I've read all the issues that have plagued other developers when using this framework, and I was under the impression that bugs were filed and fixed. Ok, but about 50% of the time, the call to NEHotspotNetwork.fetchCurrent gives me this error: NEHotspotNetwork nehelper sent invalid result code [1] for Wi-Fi information request Well, there is a workaround for that randomness too. At some point before calling this code, one can: let locationManager = CLLocationManager() locationManager.requestWhenInUseAuthorization() That eliminates the NEHotspotNetwork nehelper sent invalid result code [1] for Wi-Fi information request BUT... three issues. The user is presented with an authorization alert: Allow "Kini" to use your location? This app needs access to you Wi-Fi name to connect to your Kini device. Along with a map with a location pin on it. This gives my users a completely wrong impression, especially for a device/app where we promise users not to track their location. They actually see a map with their location pinned on it, implying something that would freak out anyone who was expecting no tracking. I understand why an authorization is normally required, but since all we are getting is our own IoT's SSID, there should be no need for an authorization for this, and no map associated with the request. Again, they are accessing my IoT's network, NOT their home/location Wi-Fi SSID. My app already knows and specifies that network, and all I am trying to do is to work around a bug that makes it look like I have a successful return from NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.apply() when in fact the network I was looking for wasn't even on. Not only do I get instances where the network doesn't connect, and result codes show no errors, but I also get instances where I get an alert that says that the network is unreachable, yet my IoT shows that the app is connected to its Wi-Fi. On the iOS device, I go to the Wi-Fi settings, and see that I am on the IoT's network. So basically, sometimes I connect, but the frameworks says that there is no connection, and sometimes it reports a connection when there is none. As you can see in the code, I call cleanupHotspot() to make the iOS device get off of my temp Wi-Fi SSID. This is the code: func cleanupHotspot() { NEHotspotConfigurationManager.shared.removeConfiguration(forSSID: ssid) } That code gets called by the above code when things aren't as I expect and need to cleanup. And I also call it when the user dismisses the viewcontroller that is attempting to make the connection. It doesn't always work. I get stuck on the tempo SSID, unless I go through this whole thing again: try to make the connection again, this time it succeeds quickly, and then I can disconnect. Any ideas? I'm on iOS18.5, and have tried this on multiple iPhones including 11, 13 and 16.

On FTP
Questions about FTP crop up from time-to-time here on DevForums. In most cases I write a general “don’t use FTP” response, but I don’t have time to go into all the details. I’ve created this post as a place to collect all of those details, so I can reference them in other threads. IMPORTANT Apple’s official position on FTP is: All our FTP APIs have been deprecated, and you should avoid using deprecated APIs. Apple has been slowly removing FTP support from the user-facing parts of our system. The most recent example of this is that we removed the ftp command-line tool in macOS 10.13. You should avoid the FTP protocol and look to adopt more modern alternatives. The rest of this post is an informational explanation of the overall FTP picture. This post is locked so I can keep it focused. If you have questions or comments, please do create a new thread in the App & System Services > Networking subtopic and I’ll respond there. Don’t Use FTP FTP is a very old and very crufty protocol. Certain things that seem obvious to us now — like being able to create a GUI client that reliably shows a directory listing in a platform-independent manner — aren’t possible to do in FTP. However, by far the biggest problem with FTP is that it provides no security [1]. Specifically, the FTP protocol: Provides no on-the-wire privacy, so anyone can see the data you transfer Provides no client-authenticates-server authentication, so you have no idea whether you’re talking to the right server Provides no data integrity, allowing an attacker to munge your data in transit Transfers user names and passwords in the clear Using FTP for anonymous downloads may be acceptable (see the explanation below) but most other uses of FTP are completely inappropriate for the modern Internet. IMPORTANT You should only use FTP for anonymous downloads if you have an independent way to check the integrity of the data you’ve downloaded. For example, if you’re downloading a software update, you could use code signing to check its integrity. If you don’t check the integrity of the data you’ve downloaded, an attacker could substitute a malicious download instead. This would be especially bad in, say, the software update case. These fundamental problems with the FTP protocol mean that it’s not a priority for Apple. This is reflected in the available APIs, which is the subject of the next section. FTP APIs Apple provides two FTP APIs: All Apple platforms provide FTP downloads via URLSession. Most Apple platforms (everything except watchOS) support CFFTPStream, which allows for directory listings, downloads, uploads, and directory creation. All of these FTP APIs are now deprecated: URLSession was deprecated for the purposes of FTP in the 2022 SDKs (macOS 13, iOS 16, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16, watchOS 9) [2]. CFFTPStream was deprecated in the 2016 SDKs (macOS 10.11, iOS 9, iPadOS 9, tvOS 9). CFFTPStream still works about as well as it ever did, which is not particularly well. Specifically: There is at least one known crashing bug (r. 35745763), albeit one that occurs quite infrequently. There are clear implementation limitations — like the fact that CFFTPCreateParsedResourceListing assumes a MacRoman text encoding (r. 7420589) — that won’t be fixed. If you’re looking for an example of how to use these APIs, check out SimpleFTPSample. Note This sample hasn’t been updated since 2013 and is unlikely to ever be updated given Apple’s position on FTP. The FTP support in URLSession has significant limitations: It only supports FTP downloads; there’s no support for uploads or any other FTP operations. It doesn’t support resumable FTP downloads [3]. It doesn’t work in background sessions. That prevents it from running FTP downloads in the background on iOS. It’s only supported in classic loading mode. See the usesClassicLoadingMode property and the doc comments in <Foundation/NSURLSession.h>. If Apple’s FTP APIs are insufficient for your needs, you’ll need to write or acquire your own FTP library. Before you do that, however, consider switching to an alternative protocol. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of importing a large FTP library into your code base, you might as well import a library for a better protocol. The next section discusses some options in this space. Alternative Protocols There are numerous better alternatives to FTP: HTTPS is by far the best alternative to FTP, offering good security, good APIs on Apple platforms, good server support, and good network compatibility. Implementing traditional FTP operations over HTTPS can be a bit tricky. One possible way forward is to enable DAV extensions on the server. FTPS is FTP over TLS (aka SSL). While FTPS adds security to the protocol, which is very important, it still inherits many of FTP’s other problems. Personally I try to avoid this protocol. SFTP is a file transfer protocol that’s completely unrelated to FTP. It runs over SSH, making it a great alternative in many of the ad hoc setups that traditionally use FTP. Apple doesn’t have an API for either FTPS or SFTP, although on macOS you may be able to make some headway by invoking the sftp command-line tool. One of FTP’s implicit design goals was to provide cross-platform support that exposes the target platform. You can think of FTP as being kinda like telnet. When you telnet from Unix to VMS, it doesn’t aim to abstract away VMS commands, so that you can type Unix commands at the VMS prompt. Rather, you’re expected to run VMS commands. FTP is (a bit) like that. This choice made sense back when the FTP protocol was invented. Folks were expecting to use FTP via a command-line client, so there was a human in the loop. If they ran a command and it produced VMS-like output, that was fine because they knew that they were FTPing into a VMS machine. However, most users today are using GUI clients, and this design choice makes it very hard to create a general GUI client for FTP. Let’s consider the simple problem of getting the contents of a directory. When you send an FTP LIST command, the server would historically run the platform native directory list command and pipe the results back to you. To create a GUI client you have to parse that data to extract the file names. Doing that is a serious challenge. Indeed, just the first step, working out the text encoding, is a challenge. Many FTP servers use UTF-8, but some use ISO-Latin-1, some use other standard encodings, some use Windows code pages, and so on. I say “historically” above because there have been various efforts to standardise this stuff, both in the RFCs and in individual server implementations. However, if you’re building a general client you can’t rely on these efforts. After all, the reason why folks continue to use FTP is because of it widespread support. IOS App tcp connect and local network permission
Recently, my application was having trouble connecting socket using TCP protocol after it was reinstalled. The cause of the problem was initially that I did not grant local network permissions when I reinstalled, I was aware of the problem, so socket connect interface worked fine after I granted permissions. However, the next time I repeat the previous operation, I also do not grant local network permissions, and then turn it back on in the Settings, and socket connect interfcae does not work properly (connect interface return errno 65, the system version and code have not changed). Fortunately, socket connect success after rebooting the phone, and more importantly, I was able to repeat the problem many times. So I want to know if the process between when I re-uninstall the app and deny local network permissions, and when I turn it back on in Settings, is that permissions have been granted normally, and not fake, and not required a reboot to reset something for socket coonnect to take effect.

How to clean useless NetworkExtension
Question 1: After NetworkExtension is installed, when the software receives a pushed uninstall command, it needs to download the entire software but fails to uninstall this NetworkExtension. Are there any solutions? Question 2: How can residual, uninstalled NetworkExtensions be cleaned up when SIP (System Integrity Protection) is enabled?

Could not delete cookies on IOS18
Hello, I have encountered an issue with an iPhone 15PM with iOS 18.5. The NSHTTPCookieStorage failed to clear cookies, after clearing them, I was still able to retrieve them. Missing flows for content filter on macOS 15 Sequoia
We use as content filter in our app to monitor flows, we gather data about the flow and block flows deemed suspicious. Our content filter is activated/deactivated by a UI app but the flows are reported via XPC to a separate daemon process for analysis. As of macOS 15, we are seeing cases where flows are missing or flows are not received at all by the content filter. The behaviour is not consistent, some devices seem to receive flows normally but others don't. It appears Intel devices are much less prone to showing the problem, whereas Arm devices routinely exhibit missing flows. On macOS 14 or earlier, there is no sign of missing flows. Testing on earlier beta versions of macOS 15 did not appear to show the problem, however I can't rule out if issue was present but it wasn't spotted. Experimenting with simple examples of using a content filter (e.g. QNE2FilterMac) does not appear to reproduce the issue. Questions, What has changed between macOS 14 and 15 that could be the cause of the lack of flows? Is our approach to using an app activated content filter reporting to a daemon connected via XPC unsupported?

Extracting IP with swift on visionOS
Hey everyone, I’m developing an app for visionOS where I need to display the Apple Vision Pro’s current IP address. For this I’m using the following code, which works for iOS, macOS, and visionOS in the simulator. Only on a real Apple Vision Pro it’s unable to extract an IP. Could it be that visionOS currently doesn’t allow this? adhoc ipa, installed on iOS 18 devices, udp and tcp cannot access the local network, such as 17.25.11.128
I have read all the information and forum posts about local network, such as TN3179, etc., and have added NSLocalNetworkUsageDescription, but it does not solve my problem. The problem I encountered is described as follows: Device: iOS18.1.1 Signing method: automatic Xcode debug directly runs, and the app can access 17.25.11.128 normally. However, relase run or packaged into adhoc installation, this IP cannot be accessed. There is a phenomenon that the app package of the App Store can also be used. Our test team has few iOS18+ devices, and internal testing is not possible. Unable to Intercept Inbound Traffic on macOS Using Network Extensions
Hi all, I have a requirement to intercept and modify inbound connections on macOS. For example, if I’m running a server on TCP port 8080 on macOS, I want to intercept all traffic to and from this port. I’m open to working at the level of TCP flows or even raw Ethernet packets, depending on what’s feasible. I’m already successfully using NETransparentProxy to intercept outbound traffic, but I haven’t found a way to handle inbound connections using any of the Network Extension APIs. Is there any supported or alternative approach for intercepting inbound traffic (via NE, NKEs, PF, or something else)? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Ping without CFSockets
All of our uses of CFSockets have started causing crashes in iOS 16. They seem to be deprecated so we are trying to transition over to using the Network framework and NWConnection to try to fix the crashes. One of our uses of them is to ping a device on the local network to make sure it is there and online and provide a heartbeat status in logs as well as put the application into a disabled state if it is not available as it is critical to the functionality of the app. I know it is discouraged to disable any functionality based on the reachability of a resource but this is in an enterprise environment where the reachability of this device is mission critical. I've seen other people ask about the ability to ping with the Network framework and the answers I've found have said that this is not possible and pointed people to the SimplePing sample code but it turns out our existing ping code is already using this technique and it is crashing just like our other CFSocket usages, inside CFSocketInvalidate with the error BUG IN CLIENT OF LIBPLATFORM: Trying to recursively lock an os_unfair_lock. Is there any updated way to perform a ping without using the CFSocket APIs that now seem to be broken/unsupported on iOS 16?
