Local Push Connectivity - Unreliable Connection
Hi! My project has the Local Push Connectivity entitlement for a feature we have requiring us to send low-latency critical notifications over a local, private Wi-Fi network. We have our NEAppPushProvider creating a SSE connection using the Network framework with our hardware running a server. The server sends a keep-alive message every second. On an iPhone 16 with iOS 18+, the connection is reliable and remains stable for hours, regardless of whether the iOS app is in the foreground, background, or killed. One of our QA engineers has been testing on an iPhone 13 running iOS 16, and has notice shortly after locking the phone, specifically when not connected to power the device seems to turn off the Wi-Fi radio. So when the server sends a notification, it is not received. About 30s later, it seems to be back on. This happens on regular intervals. When looking at our log data, the provider does seem to be getting stopped, then restarted shortly after. The reason code is NEProviderStopReasonNoNetworkAvailable, which further validates that the network is getting dropped by the device in regular intervals. My questions are: Were there possibly silent changes to the framework between iOS versions that could be the reason we're seeing inconsistent behavior? Is there a connection type we could use, instead of SSE, that would prevent the device from disconnecting and reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network? Is there an alternative approach to allow us to maintain a persistent network connection with the extension or app?

iOS 26 Crash: _xzm_xzone_malloc_freelist_outlined in com.apple.network.connections
Hello Apple Support Team, We are seeing a production crash on iOS 26 devices that appears to originate from Apple system frameworks rather than application code. Crash Summary Crash signature: _xzm_xzone_malloc_freelist_outlined Crashed thread: com.apple.network.connections Frameworks involved: CFNetwork, Security, libdispatch, libsystem_malloc Affected OS: iOS 26.x App built with: Xcode 16 Devices: Multiple models (not device-specific) Reproducibility: Intermittent, higher frequency during app launch / background networking Observed Stack Trace (top frames) _xzm_xzone_malloc_freelist_outlined dispatch_data_create_alloc xpc_data_deserialize SecTrustEvaluateIfNecessary CFNetwork HTTPProtocol / HTTP3Connection com.apple.network.connections App Context The app uses URLSession for networking. Multiple third-party SDKs are integrated (Firebase Analytics, Dynatrace, Appsflyer, and similar analytics/monitoring SDKs). These SDKs perform concurrent background network requests, especially during app launch and foreground transitions. No unsafe memory operations (manual malloc/free, unsafe pointers, or custom networking stacks) are used in the app code. Key Observations The crash is predominantly observed on iOS 26 and not on earlier iOS versions. Stack traces do not include application symbols. Disabling or delaying analytics SDK initialization significantly reduces the crash rate. Reducing concurrent network requests and limiting HTTP/3 usage also mitigates the issue. This suggests a potential regression in CFNetwork / Network.framework / HTTP/3 handling combined with the new memory allocator (xzone) on iOS 26. Impact Random app termination during background networking. Occurs without a clear deterministic repro path, making it difficult to fully mitigate at the app level. Request Could you please help investigate whether this is a known iOS 26 issue related to: HTTP/3 / QUIC networking XPC deserialization Memory allocation in the new xzone allocator High-concurrency network requests We would appreciate guidance on: Recommended mitigations Whether this issue is already tracked internally Any best practices for apps integrating multiple analytics SDKs on iOS 26 Crash logs and additional diagnostics can be provided if needed. Getting a basic URL Filter to work
I haven’t been able to get this to work at any level! I’m running into multiple issues, any light shed on any of these would be nice: I can’t implement a bloom filter that produces the same output as can be found in the SimpleURLFilter sample project, after following the textual description of it that’s available in the documentation. No clue what my implementation is doing wrong, and because of the nature of hashing, there is no way to know. Specifically: The web is full of implementations of FNV-1a and MurmurHash3, and they all produce different hashes for the same input. Can we get the proper hashes for some sample strings, so we know which is the “correct” one? Similarly, different implementations use different encodings for the strings to hash. Which should we use here? The formulas for numberOfBits and numberOfHashes give Doubles and assign them to Ints. It seems we should do this conversing by rounding them, is this correct? Can we get a sample correct value for the combined hash, so we can verify our implementations against it? Or ignoring all of the above, can we have the actual code instead of a textual description of it? 😓 I managed to get Settings to register my first attempt at this extension in beta 1. Now, in beta 2, any other project (including the sample code) will redirect to Settings, show the Allow/Deny message box, I tap Allow, and then nothing happens. This must be a bug, right? Whenever I try to enable the only extension that Settings accepted (by setting its isEnabled to true), its status goes to .stopped and the error is, of course, .unknown. How do I debug this? While the extension is .stopped, ALL URL LOADS are blocked on the device. Is this to be expected? (shouldFailClosed is set to false) Is there any way to manually reload the bloom filter? My app ships blocklist updates with background push, so it would be wasteful to fetch the filter at a fixed interval. If so, can we opt out of the periodic fetch altogether? I initially believed the API to be near useless because I didn’t know of its “fuzzy matching” capabilities, which I’ve discovered by accident in a forum post. It’d be nice if those were documented somewhere! Thanks!!

System Information in macOS 26.2 RC no longer shows Wi-Fi SSIDs
System Information in macOS from 26.0 to 26.2 RC no longer provides Wi-Fi SSIDs; instead, it displays "< redacted> " for every SSID on my two MacBooks. This issue has been fixed in macOS 26.1 beta and macOS 26.2 beta, but it returns in the RC and the Final Release versions. Is it an expected behaviour or a bug in the Release Candidate? Multipeer Connectivity stopped working between iPad simulators
We have an iPad application that utilizes Multipeer Connectivity to enable local communication between devices running a copy of our app. Until recently, we were able to test this functionality in the Xcode simulator without any issues. We could easily set up multiple simulators and have them all communicate with each other. However, recently, either due to an upgrade to Xcode or MacOS, this functionality ceased working in the simulator. Surprisingly, it still functions perfectly on physical devices. If we reboot the development computer and launch the simulator immediately after the reboot (without building and sending from Xcode, but running the existing code on the device), the issue resolves. However, the moment we generate a new build and send it to the simulator from Xcode, the multipeer functionality stops working again in the simulator. The simulators won’t reconnect until a reboot of the physical Mac hardware hosting the simulator. We’ve tried the usual troubleshooting steps, such as downgrading Xcode, deleting simulators and recreating them, cleaning the build folder, and deleting derived data, but unfortunately, none of these solutions have worked. The next step is to attempt to use a previous version of MacOS (15.3) and see if that helps, but I’d prefer to avoid this if possible. Does anyone have any obvious suggestions or troubleshooting steps that might help us identify the cause of this issue?

KeyChain Sharing with App Extensions
Hi, We are trying to use Apple Security API for KeyChain Services. Using the common App Group : Specifying the common app group in the "kSecAttrAccessGroup" field of the KeyChain query, allowed us to have a shared keychains for different apps (targets) in the app group, but this did not work for extensions. Enabling the KeyChain Sharing capability : We enabled the KeyChain Sharing Ability in the extensions and the app target as well, giving a common KeyChain Access group. Specifying this in the kSecAttrAccessGroup field also did not work. This was done in XCode as we were unable to locate it in the Developer portal in Indentifiers. We tried specifying "$AppIdentifier.KeyChainSharingGroup" in the kSecAttrAccessGroup field , but this did not work as well The error code which we get in all these 3 cases when trying to access the Keychain from the extension is error code 25291 (errSecNotAvailable). The Documentation says this error comes when "No Trust Results are available" and printing the error in xcode using the status says "No keychain is available. The online Documentation says that it is possible to share keychain with extensions, but by far we are unable to do it with the methods suggested. Do we need any special entitlement for this or is there something we are missing while using these APIs? We really appreciate any and all help in solving this issue! Thank you

Issues with TCP Socket Management and Ghost Data on ESP32 (Swift)
Hi everyone, I'm developing an iOS app using Swift (Foundation, Network, and Combine) that communicates via TCP with a weighing scale. The scale uses an internal ESP32 module acting as a Wi-Fi Access Point (no internet access) specifically for data transmission. The app connects to this network and opens a socket to receive weight data and send command strings. I’m currently facing two main issues: Socket Management: The socket isn't closing properly. Occasionally, the app opens multiple simultaneous connections instead of maintaining a single one. Since the ESP32 has a client limit, these ghost connections eventually hang the communication module. Invalid Outbound Data: The connection drops frequently because the scale receives invalid strings from the app. My logs show strange character sequences (like "gggggggggfdhj" or "vfgdddddddddddtty") being sent involuntarily. I haven't programmed these strings, and they cause the scale to terminate the session due to protocol violations. How can I ensure proper socket closure and prevent these random data packets? Additionally, a technical question: Is it possible to keep this TCP connection active in the background indefinitely on iOS while the user interacts with other apps?

NEFilterDataProvider + NEFilterControlProvider not catching in-app requests
Goal : Block all outbound connections to a static list of hosts (both In-app requests and WKWebView/Safari). App & both extensions have Network Extension entitlement with content-filter-provider and filter-control-provider What’s working: Safari and WKWebView requests matching the block list are dropped. What’s broken: In-app traffic never reaches the Data Provider—those requests always succeed. Setup: • NEFilterProviderConfiguration with both Data & Control providers, filterBrowsers = true, filterSockets = true • Data Provider implements handleNewFlow for socket/browser flows • Control Provider implements handleNewFlow for browser flows • Enabled via saveToPreferences() and toggled ON in Settings

Wi-Fi Aware using QUIC

how to store secret key in/for system extension
Hi. I have a private cryptographic key that I want to generate and store for use by the system extension only (a network extension NETransparentProxyProvider). The ideal properties I want is: only accessible by extension never leave extension not be accessible by root user or other apps Here is what I have tried so far (by/within the system extension): app data container / local storage: this works, but is accessible by root user app data shared container (storage): this works, but also acccessible by root user system keyring: works, but also accesible by root user System extension by itself does not seem to be able to store/load secrets in app protected keyring. The host application however can store in app protected keyring.... So I though, let's use an app group (as access group) and have it like this shared between host and (system) extension... but nop... (system) extension cannot access the secret... Ok... so than I thought: manual low-level XPC calls.... Also that doesn't work, got something almost to work but seemed to require an entire 3rd (launchd/daemon) service.... way to complex for what I want... also seems that as a root user I can use debug tools to also access it There is however the SendMessage/HandleMessage thing available for TransparentProxy.... that does work... but (1) also doesn't seem the most secure (2) the docs clearly state cannot rely on that for this state as the system extension can be started while the host app is not active.... (e.g. at startup) So that is not a solution either.... I went in so many different directions and rabbit holes in the last days.... this feels like a lot harder than it should be? How do other VPN/Proxy like solutions store secrets that are unique to an extension???? I am hoping there is something available here that I am simply missing despite all my effort... any guidance greatly appreciated...

macOS DNS Proxy system extension makes device stop processing MDM commands until reboot
Hi, I see an interaction issue between a DNS Proxy system extension and MDM on macOS: after some time the device stops processing MDM commands until reboot, while DNS filtering continues to work. Environment: macOS: 15.x / 26.x (reproduced on multiple minor versions) App: /Applications/MyMacProxy.app System extension: NEDNSProxyProvider as system extension Bundle id: com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy Deployment: MDM (SimpleMDM) DNS proxy config via com.apple.dnsProxy.managed Devices: supervised Macs Steps to reproduce: Enrol Mac into MDM. Install MyMacProxy app + DNS proxy system extension via pkg and apply com.apple.dnsProxy.managed profile. DNS proxy starts, DNS is filtered correctly, user network works normally. After some hours, try to manage the device from MDM: push a new configuration profile, remove an existing profile, or install / remove an app. 5.MDM server shows commands as pending / not completed. On the Mac, DNS is still filtered via our DNS proxy, and general network access (Safari etc.) continues to work. After reboot, pending MDM commands are processed and we can remove the app, profile and system extension normally. This is reproducible on our test machines. What I see on the Mac in the “stuck” state apsd is running: sudo launchctl print system/com.apple.apsd # job state = running com.apple.mdmclient.daemon exists as a job but is not running: sudo launchctl print system/com.apple.mdmclient.daemon Abbreviated output: system/com.apple.mdmclient.daemon = { ... state = not running job state = exited runs = 5 last exit code = 0 ... } So the MDM client daemon has exited cleanly (exit code 0) and is currently not running; its APS endpoints are configured. Our DNS proxy system extension is still processing flows: we see continuous logging from our NEDNSProxyProvider, and DNS filtering is clearly active (requests go through our upstream). systemextensionsctl list still shows our DNS proxy system extension as active. From the user’s perspective, everything works (with filtered DNS). From the MDM server’s perspective, commands stay pending until the next reboot. After reboot, MDM behaviour is normal again. Uninstall / cleanup (current approach, simplified) We currently use an MDM‑delivered shell script that: disables our DNS proxy configuration for the console user by editing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.plist and setting Enabled = false for our DNSProxyConfigurations entries; flushes DNS cache and restarts mDNSResponder; unloads our LaunchDaemon / LaunchAgent for the host app; kills the system extension process using pgrep -f "com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy" | xargs kill -9; removes the extension binary from /Library/SystemExtensions/.../com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy.systemextension; removes /Applications/MyMacProxy.app and related support files. We currently do not call systemextensionsctl uninstall <TEAMID> com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy from MDM, mainly because of SIP and because we understand that fully silent system extension uninstall is constrained. The MDM responsiveness issue, however, can appear even if we don’t run this aggressive uninstall script and just let the extension run for some hours. Questions Is it expected that a DNS Proxy system extension (managed via com.apple.dnsProxy.managed) can leave a device in a state where: apsd is running, com.apple.mdmclient.daemon is not running (last exit code 0), DNS proxy continues to filter traffic, but MDM commands remain pending until reboot? Are there known best practices or pitfalls when combining: DNS Proxy system extensions (NEDNSProxyProvider), MDM‑distributed com.apple.dnsProxy.managed profiles, and MDM app / profile management on recent macOS versions? For uninstall in an MDM environment, what pattern do you recommend? For example, is it better to: disable / remove the DNS proxy profile, stop the NE configuration via NEDNSProxyManager from the app, avoid killing the system extension or removing files from /Library/SystemExtensions immediately, and instead require a reboot for full removal? I can provide a sysdiagnose and unified logs (including nesessionmanager, mdmclient and our logs) from an affected machine if that would be helpful.

URLSessionDownloadTaskDelegate functions not called when using URLSession.download(for:), but works when using URLSession.downloadTask(with:)
I'm struggling to understand why the async-await version of URLSession download task APIs do not call the delegate functions, whereas the old non-async version that returns a reference to the download task works just fine. NEURLFilter production build fails with _NSURLErrorPrivacyProxyFailureKey — how to provision OHTTP privacy proxy for bundle?
Summary I'm implementing NEURLFilter with the com.apple.developer.networking.networkextension.url-filter-provider entitlement for a system-wide URL filtering feature. The feature works perfectly in development-signed builds (connecting successfully to my PIR server over extended testing) but every production-signed build fails before any network call is made. NEURLFilterManager reports .serverSetupIncomplete (code 9). After installing the NetworkExtension debug profile, the unredacted com.apple.CipherML logs reveal the cause: no privacy proxy is provisioned for this bundle identifier, and the connection is configured proxy fail closed. Environment iOS 26 Entitlement: com.apple.developer.networking.networkextension.url-filter-provider Extension point: com.apple.networkextension.url-filter-control PIR server configured via NEURLFilterManager.setConfiguration(...) The entire failure happens in approximately 18 ms, far too fast for any network round-trip, confirming no traffic ever leaves the device. What I've Verified The entitlement is present in the distribution build The NEURLFilterControlProvider extension loads and returns a valid Bloom filter prefilter (with a tag that round-trips correctly between extension and framework) NEURLFilterManager.setConfiguration(pirServerURL:pirPrivacyPassIssuerURL:pirAuthenticationToken:controlProviderBundleIdentifier:) accepts all four parameters without error Development-signed builds of the same bundle identifier connect successfully to the same PIR server On production-signed builds, zero requests reach the PIR server — failure is purely client-side, before any network activity The Question How does the OHTTP privacy proxy get provisioned for a bundle identifier so that production builds can successfully use NEURLFilter? Specifically: Is there a Capability Request form I need to submit for url-filter-provider? I cannot find one in the Capability Requests section of my developer portal. Should I be running my own OHTTP gateway (for example using swift-nio-oblivious-http), and if so, does Apple then need to provision routing from their OHTTP relay to my gateway URL? Is the OHTTP relay path meant to be automatic once the entitlement is active, and if so, is there a specific activation step I'm missing? Is there any way to verify the current provisioning state for a specific bundle identifier from the developer portal? I can provide the full sysdiagnose and unredacted bundle/server details privately to an Apple engineer if that would help diagnose. I'd prefer to keep them out of a public post. Thanks!

Kernel panics on M5 devices with network extension
Hello, We have a security solution which intercepts network traffic for inspection using a combination of Transparent Proxy Provider and Content filter. Lately we are seeing reports from the market that on M5 Macbooks and A18 Neos the system will kernel panic using our solution, even though it never happens on M1-M4 and no significant code changes were made in the mean time. Uninstalling the network protection features seem to largely fix the issues, even though we have heard of crashes happening even in safe mode or with our network extension disabled from system settings. We weren't able to reproduce internally and it seems to happen completely random on client machines, but often enough to be disrupting. Can you tell us please if this is a known problem and if there's a workaround or what can we do to narrow it down? Thanks.

5G Network Slicing and NetworkExtension
Hello, I am writing a NetworkExtension VPN using custom protocol and our client would like to able to use 5G network slice on the VPN, is this possible at all? From Apple's documentation, I found the following statement: If both network slicing and VPN are configured for an app or device, the VPN connection takes precedence over the network slice, rendering the network slice unused. Is it possible to assign a network slice on a NetworkExtension-based VPN and let the VPN traffic uses the assign network slice? Many thanks

Local Push Connectivity - Unreliable Connection
Hi! My project has the Local Push Connectivity entitlement for a feature we have requiring us to send low-latency critical notifications over a local, private Wi-Fi network. We have our NEAppPushProvider creating a SSE connection using the Network framework with our hardware running a server. The server sends a keep-alive message every second. On an iPhone 16 with iOS 18+, the connection is reliable and remains stable for hours, regardless of whether the iOS app is in the foreground, background, or killed. One of our QA engineers has been testing on an iPhone 13 running iOS 16, and has notice shortly after locking the phone, specifically when not connected to power the device seems to turn off the Wi-Fi radio. So when the server sends a notification, it is not received. About 30s later, it seems to be back on. This happens on regular intervals. When looking at our log data, the provider does seem to be getting stopped, then restarted shortly after. The reason code is NEProviderStopReasonNoNetworkAvailable, which further validates that the network is getting dropped by the device in regular intervals. My questions are: Were there possibly silent changes to the framework between iOS versions that could be the reason we're seeing inconsistent behavior? Is there a connection type we could use, instead of SSE, that would prevent the device from disconnecting and reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network? Is there an alternative approach to allow us to maintain a persistent network connection with the extension or app?

iOS 26 Crash: _xzm_xzone_malloc_freelist_outlined in com.apple.network.connections
Hello Apple Support Team, We are seeing a production crash on iOS 26 devices that appears to originate from Apple system frameworks rather than application code. Crash Summary Crash signature: _xzm_xzone_malloc_freelist_outlined Crashed thread: com.apple.network.connections Frameworks involved: CFNetwork, Security, libdispatch, libsystem_malloc Affected OS: iOS 26.x App built with: Xcode 16 Devices: Multiple models (not device-specific) Reproducibility: Intermittent, higher frequency during app launch / background networking Observed Stack Trace (top frames) _xzm_xzone_malloc_freelist_outlined dispatch_data_create_alloc xpc_data_deserialize SecTrustEvaluateIfNecessary CFNetwork HTTPProtocol / HTTP3Connection com.apple.network.connections App Context The app uses URLSession for networking. Multiple third-party SDKs are integrated (Firebase Analytics, Dynatrace, Appsflyer, and similar analytics/monitoring SDKs). These SDKs perform concurrent background network requests, especially during app launch and foreground transitions. No unsafe memory operations (manual malloc/free, unsafe pointers, or custom networking stacks) are used in the app code. Key Observations The crash is predominantly observed on iOS 26 and not on earlier iOS versions. Stack traces do not include application symbols. Disabling or delaying analytics SDK initialization significantly reduces the crash rate. Reducing concurrent network requests and limiting HTTP/3 usage also mitigates the issue. This suggests a potential regression in CFNetwork / Network.framework / HTTP/3 handling combined with the new memory allocator (xzone) on iOS 26. Impact Random app termination during background networking. Occurs without a clear deterministic repro path, making it difficult to fully mitigate at the app level. Getting a basic URL Filter to work
I haven’t been able to get this to work at any level! I’m running into multiple issues, any light shed on any of these would be nice: I can’t implement a bloom filter that produces the same output as can be found in the SimpleURLFilter sample project, after following the textual description of it that’s available in the documentation. No clue what my implementation is doing wrong, and because of the nature of hashing, there is no way to know. Specifically: The web is full of implementations of FNV-1a and MurmurHash3, and they all produce different hashes for the same input. Can we get the proper hashes for some sample strings, so we know which is the “correct” one? Similarly, different implementations use different encodings for the strings to hash. Which should we use here? The formulas for numberOfBits and numberOfHashes give Doubles and assign them to Ints. It seems we should do this conversing by rounding them, is this correct? Can we get a sample correct value for the combined hash, so we can verify our implementations against it? Or ignoring all of the above, can we have the actual code instead of a textual description of it? 😓 I managed to get Settings to register my first attempt at this extension in beta 1. Now, in beta 2, any other project (including the sample code) will redirect to Settings, show the Allow/Deny message box, I tap Allow, and then nothing happens. This must be a bug, right? Whenever I try to enable the only extension that Settings accepted (by setting its isEnabled to true), its status goes to .stopped and the error is, of course, .unknown. How do I debug this? While the extension is .stopped, ALL URL LOADS are blocked on the device. Is this to be expected? (shouldFailClosed is set to false) Is there any way to manually reload the bloom filter? My app ships blocklist updates with background push, so it would be wasteful to fetch the filter at a fixed interval. If so, can we opt out of the periodic fetch altogether? I initially believed the API to be near useless because I didn’t know of its “fuzzy matching” capabilities, which I’ve discovered by accident in a forum post. It’d be nice if those were documented somewhere! Thanks!!

System Information in macOS 26.2 RC no longer shows Wi-Fi SSIDs
System Information in macOS from 26.0 to 26.2 RC no longer provides Wi-Fi SSIDs; instead, it displays "< redacted> " for every SSID on my two MacBooks. This issue has been fixed in macOS 26.1 beta and macOS 26.2 beta, but it returns in the RC and the Final Release versions. Is it an expected behaviour or a bug in the Release Candidate? Multipeer Connectivity stopped working between iPad simulators
We have an iPad application that utilizes Multipeer Connectivity to enable local communication between devices running a copy of our app. Until recently, we were able to test this functionality in the Xcode simulator without any issues. We could easily set up multiple simulators and have them all communicate with each other. However, recently, either due to an upgrade to Xcode or MacOS, this functionality ceased working in the simulator. Surprisingly, it still functions perfectly on physical devices. If we reboot the development computer and launch the simulator immediately after the reboot (without building and sending from Xcode, but running the existing code on the device), the issue resolves. However, the moment we generate a new build and send it to the simulator from Xcode, the multipeer functionality stops working again in the simulator. The simulators won’t reconnect until a reboot of the physical Mac hardware hosting the simulator. We’ve tried the usual troubleshooting steps, such as downgrading Xcode, deleting simulators and recreating them, cleaning the build folder, and deleting derived data, but unfortunately, none of these solutions have worked. The next step is to attempt to use a previous version of MacOS (15.3) and see if that helps, but I’d prefer to avoid this if possible. Does anyone have any obvious suggestions or troubleshooting steps that might help us identify the cause of this issue?

KeyChain Sharing with App Extensions
Hi, We are trying to use Apple Security API for KeyChain Services. Using the common App Group : Specifying the common app group in the "kSecAttrAccessGroup" field of the KeyChain query, allowed us to have a shared keychains for different apps (targets) in the app group, but this did not work for extensions. Enabling the KeyChain Sharing capability : We enabled the KeyChain Sharing Ability in the extensions and the app target as well, giving a common KeyChain Access group. Specifying this in the kSecAttrAccessGroup field also did not work. This was done in XCode as we were unable to locate it in the Developer portal in Indentifiers. We tried specifying "$AppIdentifier.KeyChainSharingGroup" in the kSecAttrAccessGroup field , but this did not work as well The error code which we get in all these 3 cases when trying to access the Keychain from the extension is error code 25291 (errSecNotAvailable). The Documentation says this error comes when "No Trust Results are available" and printing the error in xcode using the status says "No keychain is available. The online Documentation says that it is possible to share keychain with extensions, but by far we are unable to do it with the methods suggested. Do we need any special entitlement for this or is there something we are missing while using these APIs? We really appreciate any and all help in solving this issue! Thank you

Issues with TCP Socket Management and Ghost Data on ESP32 (Swift)
Hi everyone, I'm developing an iOS app using Swift (Foundation, Network, and Combine) that communicates via TCP with a weighing scale. The scale uses an internal ESP32 module acting as a Wi-Fi Access Point (no internet access) specifically for data transmission. The app connects to this network and opens a socket to receive weight data and send command strings. I’m currently facing two main issues: Socket Management: The socket isn't closing properly. Occasionally, the app opens multiple simultaneous connections instead of maintaining a single one. Since the ESP32 has a client limit, these ghost connections eventually hang the communication module. Invalid Outbound Data: The connection drops frequently because the scale receives invalid strings from the app. My logs show strange character sequences (like "gggggggggfdhj" or "vfgdddddddddddtty") being sent involuntarily. I haven't programmed these strings, and they cause the scale to terminate the session due to protocol violations. How can I ensure proper socket closure and prevent these random data packets? Additionally, a technical question: Is it possible to keep this TCP connection active in the background indefinitely on iOS while the user interacts with other apps?

NEFilterDataProvider + NEFilterControlProvider not catching in-app requests
Goal : Block all outbound connections to a static list of hosts (both In-app requests and WKWebView/Safari). App & both extensions have Network Extension entitlement with content-filter-provider and filter-control-provider What’s working: Safari and WKWebView requests matching the block list are dropped. What’s broken: In-app traffic never reaches the Data Provider—those requests always succeed. Setup: • NEFilterProviderConfiguration with both Data & Control providers, filterBrowsers = true, filterSockets = true • Data Provider implements handleNewFlow for socket/browser flows • Control Provider implements handleNewFlow for browser flows • Enabled via saveToPreferences() and toggled ON in Settings

how to store secret key in/for system extension
Hi. I have a private cryptographic key that I want to generate and store for use by the system extension only (a network extension NETransparentProxyProvider). The ideal properties I want is: only accessible by extension never leave extension not be accessible by root user or other apps Here is what I have tried so far (by/within the system extension): app data container / local storage: this works, but is accessible by root user app data shared container (storage): this works, but also acccessible by root user system keyring: works, but also accesible by root user System extension by itself does not seem to be able to store/load secrets in app protected keyring. The host application however can store in app protected keyring.... So I though, let's use an app group (as access group) and have it like this shared between host and (system) extension... but nop... (system) extension cannot access the secret... Ok... so than I thought: manual low-level XPC calls.... Also that doesn't work, got something almost to work but seemed to require an entire 3rd (launchd/daemon) service.... way to complex for what I want... also seems that as a root user I can use debug tools to also access it There is however the SendMessage/HandleMessage thing available for TransparentProxy.... that does work... but (1) also doesn't seem the most secure (2) the docs clearly state cannot rely on that for this state as the system extension can be started while the host app is not active.... (e.g. at startup) So that is not a solution either.... I went in so many different directions and rabbit holes in the last days.... this feels like a lot harder than it should be? How do other VPN/Proxy like solutions store secrets that are unique to an extension???? I am hoping there is something available here that I am simply missing despite all my effort... any guidance greatly appreciated...

macOS DNS Proxy system extension makes device stop processing MDM commands until reboot
Hi, I see an interaction issue between a DNS Proxy system extension and MDM on macOS: after some time the device stops processing MDM commands until reboot, while DNS filtering continues to work. Environment: macOS: 15.x / 26.x (reproduced on multiple minor versions) App: /Applications/MyMacProxy.app System extension: NEDNSProxyProvider as system extension Bundle id: com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy Deployment: MDM (SimpleMDM) DNS proxy config via com.apple.dnsProxy.managed Devices: supervised Macs Steps to reproduce: Enrol Mac into MDM. Install MyMacProxy app + DNS proxy system extension via pkg and apply com.apple.dnsProxy.managed profile. DNS proxy starts, DNS is filtered correctly, user network works normally. After some hours, try to manage the device from MDM: push a new configuration profile, remove an existing profile, or install / remove an app. 5.MDM server shows commands as pending / not completed. On the Mac, DNS is still filtered via our DNS proxy, and general network access (Safari etc.) continues to work. After reboot, pending MDM commands are processed and we can remove the app, profile and system extension normally. This is reproducible on our test machines. What I see on the Mac in the “stuck” state apsd is running: sudo launchctl print system/com.apple.apsd # job state = running com.apple.mdmclient.daemon exists as a job but is not running: sudo launchctl print system/com.apple.mdmclient.daemon Abbreviated output: system/com.apple.mdmclient.daemon = { ... state = not running job state = exited runs = 5 last exit code = 0 ... } So the MDM client daemon has exited cleanly (exit code 0) and is currently not running; its APS endpoints are configured. Our DNS proxy system extension is still processing flows: we see continuous logging from our NEDNSProxyProvider, and DNS filtering is clearly active (requests go through our upstream). systemextensionsctl list still shows our DNS proxy system extension as active. From the user’s perspective, everything works (with filtered DNS). From the MDM server’s perspective, commands stay pending until the next reboot. After reboot, MDM behaviour is normal again. Uninstall / cleanup (current approach, simplified) We currently use an MDM‑delivered shell script that: disables our DNS proxy configuration for the console user by editing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.networkextension.plist and setting Enabled = false for our DNSProxyConfigurations entries; flushes DNS cache and restarts mDNSResponder; unloads our LaunchDaemon / LaunchAgent for the host app; kills the system extension process using pgrep -f "com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy" | xargs kill -9; removes the extension binary from /Library/SystemExtensions/.../com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy.systemextension; removes /Applications/MyMacProxy.app and related support files. We currently do not call systemextensionsctl uninstall <TEAMID> com.company.agent.MyMacProxy.dnsProxy from MDM, mainly because of SIP and because we understand that fully silent system extension uninstall is constrained. The MDM responsiveness issue, however, can appear even if we don’t run this aggressive uninstall script and just let the extension run for some hours. Questions Is it expected that a DNS Proxy system extension (managed via com.apple.dnsProxy.managed) can leave a device in a state where: apsd is running, com.apple.mdmclient.daemon is not running (last exit code 0), DNS proxy continues to filter traffic, but MDM commands remain pending until reboot? Are there known best practices or pitfalls when combining: DNS Proxy system extensions (NEDNSProxyProvider), MDM‑distributed com.apple.dnsProxy.managed profiles, and MDM app / profile management on recent macOS versions? For uninstall in an MDM environment, what pattern do you recommend? For example, is it better to: disable / remove the DNS proxy profile, stop the NE configuration via NEDNSProxyManager from the app, avoid killing the system extension or removing files from /Library/SystemExtensions immediately, and instead require a reboot for full removal? I can provide a sysdiagnose and unified logs (including nesessionmanager, mdmclient and our logs) from an affected machine if that would be helpful.

URLSessionDownloadTaskDelegate functions not called when using URLSession.download(for:), but works when using URLSession.downloadTask(with:)
I'm struggling to understand why the async-await version of URLSession download task APIs do not call the delegate functions, whereas the old non-async version that returns a reference to the download task works just fine. NEURLFilter production build fails with _NSURLErrorPrivacyProxyFailureKey — how to provision OHTTP privacy proxy for bundle?
Summary I'm implementing NEURLFilter with the com.apple.developer.networking.networkextension.url-filter-provider entitlement for a system-wide URL filtering feature. The feature works perfectly in development-signed builds (connecting successfully to my PIR server over extended testing) but every production-signed build fails before any network call is made. NEURLFilterManager reports .serverSetupIncomplete (code 9). After installing the NetworkExtension debug profile, the unredacted com.apple.CipherML logs reveal the cause: no privacy proxy is provisioned for this bundle identifier, and the connection is configured proxy fail closed. Environment iOS 26 Entitlement: com.apple.developer.networking.networkextension.url-filter-provider Extension point: com.apple.networkextension.url-filter-control PIR server configured via NEURLFilterManager.setConfiguration(...) What I've Verified The entitlement is present in the distribution build The NEURLFilterControlProvider extension loads and returns a valid Bloom filter prefilter (with a tag that round-trips correctly between extension and framework) NEURLFilterManager.setConfiguration(pirServerURL:pirPrivacyPassIssuerURL:pirAuthenticationToken:controlProviderBundleIdentifier:) accepts all four parameters without error Development-signed builds of the same bundle identifier connect successfully to the same PIR server On production-signed builds, zero requests reach the PIR server — failure is purely client-side, before any network activity The Question How does the OHTTP privacy proxy get provisioned for a bundle identifier so that production builds can successfully use NEURLFilter? Specifically: Is there a Capability Request form I need to submit for url-filter-provider? I cannot find one in the Capability Requests section of my developer portal. Should I be running my own OHTTP gateway (for example using swift-nio-oblivious-http), and if so, does Apple then need to provision routing from their OHTTP relay to my gateway URL? Is the OHTTP relay path meant to be automatic once the entitlement is active, and if so, is there a specific activation step I'm missing? Is there any way to verify the current provisioning state for a specific bundle identifier from the developer portal? I can provide the full sysdiagnose and unredacted bundle/server details privately to an Apple engineer if that would help diagnose. I'd prefer to keep them out of a public post. Thanks!

Kernel panics on M5 devices with network extension
Hello, We have a security solution which intercepts network traffic for inspection using a combination of Transparent Proxy Provider and Content filter. Lately we are seeing reports from the market that on M5 Macbooks and A18 Neos the system will kernel panic using our solution, even though it never happens on M1-M4 and no significant code changes were made in the mean time. Uninstalling the network protection features seem to largely fix the issues, even though we have heard of crashes happening even in safe mode or with our network extension disabled from system settings. We weren't able to reproduce internally and it seems to happen completely random on client machines, but often enough to be disrupting. Can you tell us please if this is a known problem and if there's a workaround or what can we do to narrow it down? Thanks.

5G Network Slicing and NetworkExtension
Hello, I am writing a NetworkExtension VPN using custom protocol and our client would like to able to use 5G network slice on the VPN, is this possible at all? From Apple's documentation, I found the following statement: If both network slicing and VPN are configured for an app or device, the VPN connection takes precedence over the network slice, rendering the network slice unused. Is it possible to assign a network slice on a NetworkExtension-based VPN and let the VPN traffic uses the assign network slice? Many thanks
