Disable recording of Screentime for WKWebView with STWebpageController?
Hi, it seems that with iOS26 the system displays two entries in the screentime report for apps that use a WKWebView: one for the app itself and one for the website that was displayed in the app. We don't see this behaviour in iOS18.7. I'm reseaching how to disable the recording for the webviews in one of our apps (written in Swift with UIKit). The STWebpageController looked promising, especially the field suppressUsageRecording, but the whole class is poorly documented. We initialized it with the bundle identifier of the app and set the url of the wkwebview as the url in STWebpageController. It looks a bit like this: webView = WKWebView(frame: .zero, configuration: config) view.addSubview(webView) //setup STWebpageController webpageController = STWebpageController() do { try webpageController!.setBundleIdentifier(bundleIdentifier) } catch{ } webpageController!.suppressUsageRecording = true addChild(webpageController!) view.addSubview(webpageController!.view) webpageController!.view.frame = view.frame webpageController!.didMove(toParent: self) //load url in webView let request = URLRequest(url: url, cachePolicy: .reloadIgnoringLocalCacheData) webview.load(request) webpageController?.url = request.url This has no effect on the recorded screentime for the webview inside our app - we still see the same time for the container app and the included webview. Any suggestions? Thanks, Heiko

WebKit HTML Anchor download attribute ignored by PDF files
When trying to create an anchor with the download attribute it does not work for PDF files, it displays the files inline. Also when the download attribute is set the target attribute is ignored too. The tag: ... The behavior: It displaies the file in line. The correct behavior: The file should be downloaded and not displayed or at least displayed but with the "_blank" target (new tab). This is an issue when working with WebSockets which is closed when the file is opened inline.

-webkit-touch-callout: none; not working in Safari on iOS 26.1
Hi everyone, I want users not to see the system context menu when long-pressing text on a page in Safari on iOS. I found on MDN that the CSS property -webkit-touch-callout: none; can achieve this. But in reality, it doesn't really work. MDN documents URL: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/Reference/Properties/-webkit-touch-callout Here’s a minimal example: function preventIOSSafariContextMenu() { if (document.getElementById(STYLE_ELEMENT_ID)) return; if (!IS_TOUCH_DEVICE) return; const style = document.createElement("style"); style.id = STYLE_ELEMENT_ID; style.textContent = ` html, body { -webkit-touch-callout: none !important; } `; (document.head || document.documentElement).appendChild(style); } The context menu persists. Has anyone else encountered this? Is this an intentional change in WebKit, or could it be a regression? If it’s intentional, is there a recommended alternative? Thanks in advance for any insights!

WKWebView and WebAuthN question
After reading several posts I see that I need to add the "com.apple.developer.web-browser.public-key-credential" capability to my macOS app in order to get it to work. So my noob question is where do I request this capability? Can I as a developer request it or does the Account owner need to request it? Once approved, how do I add it to my app's capabilities? Thanks for your patience

Suggestions for OAuth2 in Swift
Hello! I have a few questions about integrating an OAuth2 API into my Swift application. I am using this API to access user data from the website (users will authenticate themselves within the app). I have seen other apps use this API in the way that I am describing it so I know that it is possible. However, I am not sure how to implement it. Are there any recommended ways to use an OAuth2 API in my application? The API that I am using does not specifically say that it supports PKCE. However, I have heard from some sources that it does. If it does not support PKCE, how do I still create a secure app infrastructure that will pass App Store Review? At a more basic level, what is the difference between OAuth2 and PKCE? What should I use in my app? Are there any resources to learn a little bit more about these protocols so that I understand them better? Thanks!

WKWebView ignores upgradeKnownHostsToHTTPS = false on iOS 18.x (Xcode 16.x) but works on iOS 17.x (Xcode 15.x)
Hello, We are experiencing a behavior change with WKWebView related to upgradeKnownHostsToHTTPS. Current application, we explicitly disable automatic HTTPS upgrades: let config = WKWebViewConfiguration() config.upgradeKnownHostsToHTTPS = false Observed behavior iOS 17.5 (built with Xcode 15.3) http:// image URLs are not automatically upgraded to https://, and the behavior works as expected. iOS 18.5 / 18.6.x (built with Xcode 16.4) http:// image URLs appear to be automatically upgraded to https:// by WebKit, even when upgradeKnownHostsToHTTPS is explicitly set to false. This behavior occurs for subresource requests such as <img src="http://..."> inside a WKWebView. Question Has the behavior of upgradeKnownHostsToHTTPS changed in iOS 18 / Xcode 16? Is this property now ignored for certain types of subresource requests (e.g. images), or overridden by new WebKit security policies such as mixed-content HTTPS upgrades? Any clarification or official guidance would be greatly appreciated!.

Handling POST-based Authentication Flow with ASWebAuthenticationSession and MDM Client Certificate
Hello, I have an authentication flow where my app communicates with a backend protected by F5 client certificate validation. The client certificate is distributed via MDM and is available in the device keychain, but not accessible directly from the app. When using ASWebAuthenticationSession (or SFSafariViewController) Safari can successfully pick up and present the certificate during authentication, so that part works fine. However, the backend’s authenticate endpoint only supports a POST request with an Authorization header, whereas ASWebAuthenticationSession only accepts a GET URL when starting the session. My questions are: How is this type of flow typically implemented in iOS? Should the backend provide a GET-based endpoint that redirects into the POST, or is there a recommended iOS pattern (e.g., an intermediate HTML page that does the POST after certificate validation)? Are there Apple guidelines on handling certificate-based auth with ASWebAuthenticationSession when the API requires POST, especially for In-House distributed apps? Any guidance or best practices would be very helpful.

Repeated Camera Permission Prompts in Web App on Safari (iOS)
Hi everyone, We're building a web application using Next.js that captures around 40 images across different routes as part of a guided user flow. At the beginning of the process, we explicitly request camera permission using navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia(...), and the user grants it successfully. However, as users proceed through the flow (navigating between routes), Safari on iOS intermittently re-prompts for camera access—despite the initial permission already being granted and the origin (domain) remaining unchanged. This repeated prompting interrupts the user experience significantly. What we’ve tried: Ensuring camera access is requested only once and reused where possible. Using persistent media stream across routes (where feasible). Testing across different iOS versions to confirm consistency. Questions: Is there a known workaround or best practice to persist camera access across route transitions in a SPA/PWA context on iOS? Are there any Safari-specific behaviors or restrictions related to WebRTC / getUserMedia we should be aware of? Would embedding the camera view in an iframe or maintaining a persistent component help avoid re-prompting? Any guidance or shared experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

JavaScript to externally automate Webpage operation
I am a newby to JavaScript, suggested to me to use to automate the task of opening of a Web page, selecting three internal buttons in sequence to download the underlying chart data. I have created the App via Automator on macOS, to run the Script, successfully open the Web Page, but cannot find a way to select and click() on the buttons. Can someone please help me. Robert. This is the code suggested by Grok 3 Beta, but I see this error: Error: First parameter passed to Document Constructor must be an object. function run(input, parameters) { var Safari = Application('Safari'); Safari.activate(); // Open the AEMO data dashboard (Grok 3 Beta recomendation opens the web page correctly) Safari.Document().make(); Safari.windows[0].currentTab.url = 'https://www.aemo.com.au/energy-systems/electricity/national-electricity-market-nem/data-nem/data-dashboard-nem'; delay(10); // Wait for page to load // Click the Fuel Mix tab (target the active in the tabs) Safari.Document(0).doJavaScript("document.querySelector('.tabs .active').click()"); delay(5); // Wait for tab content to load // Select 48 hrs from the dropdown Safari.Document(0).doJavaScript("document.querySelector('#interval').value = '48H'; document.querySelector('#interval').dispatchEvent(new Event('change'))"); delay(5); // Wait for selection to take effect // Click the download button Safari.Document(0).doJavaScript("document.querySelector('.visualisation-icon-button').click()"); return input; }

Unable to send a message from website to Safari web extension
I've been unable to successfully get a webpage to send a message to a Safari web extension, no matter what I try doing. I've added the following to my manifest.json file, and it's running manifest v3 { "externally_connectable": { "matches": [ "*://mywebsite.com/*", "*://localhost:3000/*" ] } } My web page executes the following code snippet. I've tried this both while running my site locally (on localhost) and pushed to production. let safariExtensionId = "co.companyname.productname.Extension (ABCD1234)" browser.runtime.sendMessage(safariExtensionId, { greeting: "hello"}, function(response) { console.log("Received response from background page"); console.log(response.farewell); } ); In the Safari web extension's background.js file, I've added the following onMessageExternal listener: browser.runtime.onMessageExternal.addListener((message, sender, sendResponse) => { console.log("Received message from the sender."); console.log(message.greeting); sendResponse({ farewell: "Goodbye!" }); }); This is directly copied from the instructions in this WWDC video: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/safariservices/messaging-between-a-webpage-and-your-safari-web-extension It's also extremely difficult to debug what's happening since the extensions service working frequently does not appear in the Web Extension Background Content menu Is there something I'm doing wrong, or a bug I'm not aware of?

I have a question about Safari running in the background on iOS and iPadOS.
I coded two demo websites as follows (both written in NextJS): Website 1: I coded an interval counter that increments every 1 second. Website 2: I used the MediaRecorder API (described in the WebKit documentation: https://webkit.org/blog/11353/mediarecorder-api/). In the ondataavailable function, I periodically send a blob (once every 1 second) to my server. In the backend, I coded a POST API to upload this blob. I noticed that with website 1, the interval doesn't work when I run Safari in the background, even on iOS and iPadOS. However, website 2 works, meaning it still calls my API normally (I tried running Safari in the background for about 1-2 hours and it worked). So, does this mean Apple allows native APIs like MediaRecorder and its callbacks to run in the background?

ProofPoint has blocked our IP for a year - am at wits end
Hello all, As you may know, the company ProofPoint is an Apple partner, and is engaged (I think) to reduce misuse of icloud emails. We have two servers solely set up for our web-app, which is a specialised forum for apartment owners. The new servers were established about the same time, with the same provider, with clean new IP addresses - and as mentioned above, are only used for this web-app. During a testing phase a YEAR ago, we became aware that our in-house icloud emails weren't receiving notifications via the app, and further investigations revealed that the cause was that ProofPoint had placed a block on that server's IP. We immediately, via their website form initiated a Support Ticket, which, the site indicated was lodged, BUT we have never received any response to that Ticket, nor have we received any response to four subsequent Tickets we initiated - nothing. In over a year!! Yesterday, we contacted Apple support, but the devices area of support is the main section and they said it wasn't an issue they could assist with. Some relevant matters: SPF: DKIM: DMARC: are, I believe all configured correctly (and Gmail gives a PASS to all of them). The IP is not blacklisted by any list we are aware of. Our other server's IP isn't blocked by ProofPoint. So, literally at wits end, I'm reaching out to the developer subscribers here to see if they have any suggestions for us. We currently are unable to accept any new subscriber that is using an icloud email address, and that's an absurd situation to be in. Surely we don't have to go to the trouble and inconvenience of obtaining a new IP because of this!!! But when we can't get ANY response to the Support Tickets, it's really hard. Thanks

WKNavigationDelegate methods not getting called even though
Hi everyone, We work on a macOS plugin which then gets loaded into another application. I'm trying to load a webpage in that application through our plugin using a WKWebView & I set my class as the navigationDelegate for the same. I do not receive any callbacks for the WKNavigationDelegate methods. I have debugged & made sure that the navigationDelegate is actually set to my class. Here is a sample code of what I'm doing : [[NSApplication sharedApplication] runModalForWindow:self.mWindowController.window]; - (void)windowDidLoad { [super windowDidLoad]; [self.window makeKeyAndOrderFront:self]; [self.window orderFrontRegardless]; if (self.mLoadingView == nil) { self.mLoadingView = [[LoadingView alloc] initWithFrame:[[self.window contentView] frame]]; } [[self.window contentView] addSubview:self.mLoadingView]; [self.mLoadingView showLoadingView]; [self.window setLevel:NSMainMenuWindowLevel]; [self loadWebPage]; } -(void)loadWebPage { [self.mWKWebView setUIDelegate:self]; [self.mWKWebView setNavigationDelegate:self]; [self.mWKWebView stopLoading]; NSURL *lURL = [self samplePageURL]; WKNavigation *lNavigation = [self.mWKWebView loadRequest:[NSURLRequest requestWithURL:lURL]]; } - (void)webView:(WKWebView *)pWKWebView didFinishNavigation:(WKNavigation *)pNavigation { [self removeLoadingview]; [self.mWKWebView evaluateJavaScript:@"document.body.setAttribute('oncontextmenu', 'event.preventDefault();');" completionHandler:nil]; } I do not get any calls in the webView:didFinishNavigation: & I also tried other methods like webView:didStartProvisionalNavigation, webView:didFailProvisionalNavigation:withError: etc but did not receive any call in those either. Instead of runModalForWindow: if I use showWindow: on the mWindowController the webpage somehow loads but I still don't get any callbacks & so the loadingview subview is also present. The WKWebView is placed in a storyboard, and I have an IBOutlet connected to it in my class. Has anyone faced a similar issue or can point me to something I might be missing? All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

iOS 18 Safari and WKWebview, "NotSupportedError" issue when playing videos
WKWebview of iOS 18 includes Safari browser. When playing videos, some videos show "NotSupportedError: The operation is not supported.", but it is normal on iOS15 devices. The video link is as follows. Even if it is downloaded and referenced locally in HTML, it cannot be played, so it is ruled out that it is a network problem. https://ydtj-adas.oss-cn-shanghai.aliyuncs.com/e6yun.com/exam/exam/a35447b496b94e5e9a6aab27d62c867e.mp4 cannot be played https://ydtj-adas.oss-cn-shanghai.aliyuncs.com/e6yun.com/exam/exam/82d970957a7d4e8d88c13cd101143005.mp4 can be played

Displaying spatial photos and videos on web pages in Safari
Cross posting from Spatial Computing, apologies if this is not the appropriate forum. The purpose is to create a simple web-based gallery of spatial photos and videos using static html files. I have successfully displayed spatial photos using the img tag and IMG.heic files. I can tap and hold the image to bring up the contextual menu and from there select View Spatial Photo. Is there any way to add a control to the image, like a link or overlay on the image itself, that a user can simply tap to show the image in 3D? And how to host a (small!) video file on a web page without going through a CDN/streaming service? Sample html would be much appreciated.

Cannot Play mp3 File via AudioContext in iOS 18 Safari
I have a Safari extension that plays audio via the javascript AudioContext API. It was working fine under iOS 17 and is now broken under iOS 18. It does not play audio at all. I've tried in both the iOS 18 public beta and the iOS 18.1 developer beta. It is broken in both of them. I've also created Feedback item FB15170620 which has a url attached to a page I created which demonstrates the issue.

Repeated Camera Permission Prompts in Web App on Safari (iOS)

I noticed that with website 1, the interval doesn't work when I run Safari in the background, even on iOS and iPadOS. However, website 2 works, meaning it still calls my API normally (I tried running Safari in the background for about 1-2 hours and it worked). So, does this mean Apple allows native APIs like MediaRecorder and its callbacks to run in the background?

WKWebView auto reloading upon app resume
I recently noticed that putting the app on background for some time, then switching back to it again causes the WKWebView to reload the current page, same with just hitting f5 on it. How do we disable this behavior?

WKWebView + Cookie
Description: In our app, we have login page which displayed in WKWebView. In that page, there is an Remember my Device cookie option which user can select, so next time it OTP page will not be displayed. Problem Statement: Recently we found that some issue happened with this cookie. Especially, when users upgraded their OS versions to 18.6 or 26.1 or 26.2. Need to understand, any changes related to Cookie part in latest OS Versions?
