Background timer
Hey everyone! I'm trying to develop an app that would need to send periodic notifications (every 20 minutes, for instance) to the user even when the app is not running (but only when the phone is being used). I've been reading through the prior comments and all about not being able to have a timer run in the background in the way I need it to, but I wanted to ask if there's any way around this, or is there truly no way? If there is no way to do this, I was just now considering another workaround, where I could try getting the time they open their phone, and from there, I schedule local notification for every 20 minutes or so for the entire day, and they keep sending until the phone is turned off, when the rest of the scheduled local notifications are cancelled. Is this possible? I would also appreciate any other suggests/workarounds for this. Happy to provide any additional details needed! Thanks!

LiveActivity start via APNs not working
I am trying to issue the "start" APNs push notification to start a live activity for my iOS app. The notification appears to send correctly, there is no error message, but the live activity never appears for any of my users (users are in TestFlight). In addition to issuing the APNs commands from my server, I have also tried using the CloudKit Push Notification Console to manually generate a "start" notification. It submits correctly but the live activity never starts. I have also checked the Console app to watch the device logs and see if iOS is rejecting/throttling the live activity but I don't see any activity related to the start message at all. Here are some details: App bundle ID: `com.penzu.moodmoji` APNs topic: `com.penzu.moodmoji.push-type.liveactivity` APNs push type: `liveactivity` Recent apns-id: `7b633309-b7fd-4163-b620-776efa04f315` APNs payload: { "aps": { "timestamp": 1742651625, "event": "start", "content-state": { "totalDays": 7, "currentDay": 2, "progress": 0.29, "status": "ACTIVE", "reportReady": false }, "attributes-type": "GoalActivityAttributes", "attributes": { "totalDays": 7, "currentDay": 2, "progress": 0.29, "status": "ACTIVE", "reportReady": false }, "alert": { "title": "It's day 2!", "body": "Don't forget to record every time you feel anxious today." } } } I can confirm that LiveActivities started by the iOS app with ActivityKit work correctly, and the app does appear to be receiving pushToStartTokenUpdates: struct GoalActivityAttributes: ActivityAttributes, Sendable { struct ContentState: Codable & Hashable, Sendable { let totalDays: Int let currentDay: Int let progress: Double let status: String let reportReady: Bool } let goal: SimpleGoal } for await nextStartToken in Activity<GoalActivityAttributes>.pushToStartTokenUpdates { // send nextStartToken to server... } The app I'm testing with is in TestFlight, using the production APNs environment.

Weather Notifications
I'm strugling about the way how to code notifications for my weather aplication. I use data from my server that receives weather changing values from my own weather station and want to notify user of my app when eg strong wind will blow or temperature go under eg 3℃ etc. The weather station has 8 sensors so there is sometimes a lot of data changing in particular minute that i set to parse data from server and notify user about it. But the notifications only works only when app is on and couple minutes after locking display. So please what could i use strategy for the app to works even when the app sleeps ?

Clarification on Timing for Critical Alerts Approval in iOS
We are currently planning the development of an iOS healthcare application that will require the use of Critical Alerts. I understand that these notifications bypass Do Not Disturb and Silent mode, and therefore require special entitlement from Apple. We understand that Critical Alerts require a special entitlement from Apple. Could you please clarify: Do we need to request and obtain Apple’s approval for Critical Alerts before we begin development of the app? Or can we apply for this entitlement after we have a working build or prototype ready? We want to ensure compliance and streamline our development process, so any guidance on the appropriate timing for the entitlement request would be greatly appreciated.

Device token not being extracted - iOS app registered for push notifications but callback methods not called
Background: The project was created in Xcode 5, then recreated in new Xcode. Before migration, push notifications worked without issues, after migration device token stopped being extracted. Problem: iOS app registers for push notifications, but didRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithDeviceToken or didFailToRegisterForRemoteNotificationsWithError methods are not being called. Current situation: App is registered for push notifications (isRegisteredForRemoteNotifications = true) Notification permissions are granted Entitlements are configured correctly (aps-environment: development) Bundle ID: com.autoserviceonline.app Team: BUSINESSVISION COMPANY, TOO (NS3FSG45V7) But callback methods are not being called What I've already tried: Deleted and recreated all App IDs in Apple Developer Portal Cleared Xcode cache and derived data Created new APNs certificates and provisioning profiles Removed "ghost" certificate from Keychain Access Problem persists Additional information: Also noticed that Push Notifications Console opens non-existent project "BV.TestSwiftData" with Personal Team instead of current corporate App ID com.autoserviceonline.app. These issues might be related to project migration from old Xcode. Request: Why iOS doesn't call callback methods for device token, although registration was successful?

Inconsistent grouping of notifications
I'm sending push notifications to a notification extension, and within the extension setting the threadIdentifier to be the same. But I'm observing inconsistent grouping behaviour, and behaviour that changes over time. The general iPhone settings are to display notifications as a Stack, and the app settings are to show on lock screen, notification center and banners and the notification grouping is set to by app (changing it to automatic doesn't affect the behaviour below). Pushes are displayed on the lock screen grouped together, then if the device is roused and the screen swiped down to reveal the notification center then they are still grouped. So far so good. If the iphone is active then the notifications appear at the top of the screen, one by one, but in this case if there is a swipe down to reveal the notification center then the notifications are not grouped when displayed, but shown individually. But then if one waits a few minutes and then displays the notification center for a 2nd time, sometimes now they will be grouped, but sometimes not. Why are they not (always) being displayed as grouped in the notification center?

Problem receiving Remote Notification in the background after Review Rejected
I created an app. One if its functionalities is receive Remote Notification in the background, while app is monitoring Significant Location Changes (SLC). This functionality worked fine. I was receiving these notifications correctly. Sometimes instantly, sometime with small or large delay. And then I send the app for review. It was rejected with 3 remarks: The app or metadata includes information about third-party platforms that may not be relevant for App Store users, who are focused on experiences offered by the app itself (I wrote that app communication works both for iOS and Android.) The app declares support for audio in the UIBackgroundModes key in your Info.plist but we are unable to locate any features that require persistent audio. EULA (End User License Agreement) is missing for in-app purchases. After the rejection the app is no longer receiving these notifications. They are there, since the app receives them, when I open app, or significant location change is detected. It also works, when I run the app directly from Xcode (in debug mode), not from TestFlight nor in Sandbox. It seem to me like Apple somehow spoiled my background capabilities on purpose or accidentally. Is it possible? What can I do with it? Is it the case that I should just fix the review remarks and send the app back to review, and once the app passes it, it will work again? Or should I not count on it? Any suggestions? I asked Apple using: https://developer.apple.com/contact/topic/#!/topic/select but so far no response.

How can notification action buttons' text be center aligned?
The iOS documentation shows notification actions buttons with the text center aligned: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/usernotifications/declaring-your-actionable-notification-types But there's no apparent way for an app to control this. The buttons are controlled and rendered by the system and the text is always left aligned. Is there some way to get the text center aligned?

Push Notification don't wake up my app
Hi everyone, We're experiencing an issue with our Flutter app that uses PushKit, CallKit, and Janus for handling VoIP calls. Everything works fine when the app is in the foreground, but when the app is in the background or completely closed (terminated state), the behavior is inconsistent: Sometimes, incoming calls are received as expected. Other times, the app does nothing, and the call is not delivered at all. Upon checking the console logs, we noticed that our app is being canceled (terminated by the system), which seems to be the reason why calls are not coming through. This happens randomly, making it difficult to reproduce consistently. Additional Details: The app is configured to handle VoIP notifications correctly. We are using PushKit to wake up the app and trigger CallKit for the incoming call UI. When the app is active, calls are handled correctly via Janus WebRTC signaling. We have verified that background modes for VoIP are enabled in the Info.plist. We suspect that iOS may be aggressively killing the app in the background, preventing incoming call notifications from reaching it. Questions: Has anyone experienced similar behavior with PushKit + CallKit on recent iOS versions? Could iOS be terminating the app due to background execution policies? Are there recommended best practices to ensure reliable delivery of VoIP notifications when the app is closed? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! Carplay not read incoming chat message like whats app.
We have implemented Carplay in our voip based project and in this we have implemented Incoming call and chat notification feature for Carplay. For Carplay we implemented siri. Siri Object donated Successfully in Notification service Extension when notification didreceive method called. Donation Code :- func donateIncomingMessageIntent(sender: String, senderId: String, message: String, messageId: String, userInfo: [AnyHashable: Any],destination:String) { // Create proper name components clearAllinteraction() var nameComponents = PersonNameComponents() nameComponents.givenName = sender //unknown let senderPerson = INPerson( personHandle: INPersonHandle(value: senderId, type: .unknown), nameComponents: nameComponents, displayName: sender, image: nil, contactIdentifier: senderId, customIdentifier: "sender_\(senderId)" ) let recipientPerson = INPerson( personHandle: INPersonHandle(value: "me@example.com", type: .emailAddress), nameComponents: nil, displayName: "Me", image: nil, contactIdentifier: "me_id", customIdentifier: "user_id" ) let inMessage = INMessage( identifier: messageId, conversationIdentifier: "conversation_\(senderId)", content: message, dateSent: Date(), sender: senderPerson, recipients: [recipientPerson], groupName: nil, messageType: .text ) let intent = INSearchForMessagesIntent( recipients: [recipientPerson], senders: [senderPerson], searchTerms: [message], attributes: .unread, dateTime: nil, identifiers: [messageId], notificationIdentifiers: [messageId], groupNames: ["Messages"] ) let interaction = INInteraction(intent: intent, response: nil) interaction.identifier = "message_\(messageId)" interaction.direction = .incoming // Add direction DispatchQueue.global(qos: .userInitiated).async { interaction.donate { error in if let error = error { print("❌ Failed to donate INSearchForMessagesIntent: \(error.localizedDescription)") } else { print("✅ Donated INSearchForMessagesIntent successfully!") let intentData: [String: Any] = [ "senderName": sender, "senderId": senderId, "message": message, "messageId": messageId, "timestamp": Date().timeIntervalSince1970, "conversationId": "conversation_\(senderId)", // Add conversationId "destination":destination ] let defaults = UserDefaults(suiteName: "group.com.chatapp") // 🔁 Use your App Group ID defaults?.removeObject(forKey: "lastCarPlayIntentData") defaults?.set(intentData, forKey: "lastCarPlayIntentData") defaults?.synchronize() } } } } Here SenderID is like 3000@abc,2000@abc etc. In siri ,When we handle INSearchForMessagesIntent at that time all data getting from Userdefaults because without Userdefaults INSearchForMessagesIntent value nil. Even we enabled announcement using .allowAnnouncement. We also tried to save same sender in contact Book because sometime siri search contact and not found then may be raise this type of issue. So we need code level support for read incoming message in carplay when notification comes. Thank you.

CarPlay notifications unsupported for Driving Task apps in iOS 18.6
I have my app configured as a Driving Task app with the entitlement and provisioning profile correctly set up. I am also requesting the ".carPlay" notification authorization option and setting up the carplay notification category with the ".allowInCarPlay" category, both without error. When testing with the iPhone and carplay simulators the user notifications I send are appearing on the phone but not in carplay. When I check the notification settings with UNUserNotificationCenter.current().getNotificationSettings() I see that carplay is shown to be not supported ("carPlaySetting: NotSupported"). The CarPlay Developer Guide 2025-06-09 (which is the version currently referenced in the Apple docs) states that "Starting in iOS 18.4, notifications are also supported in CarPlay driving task apps". Has this discrepancy been addressed anywhere, or is this an open issue? My software versions: MacOS: Sequoia 15.6 XCode: 16.4 iPhone Simulator: iPhone 16 with iOS 18.6

Push payload is not present on notification tap
I am checking if the user taps on the firebase push notification and get the payload. override func userNotificationCenter(_ center: UNUserNotificationCenter, didReceive response: UNNotificationResponse, withCompletionHandler completionHandler: @escaping () -> Void) { let userInfo = response.notification.request.content.userInfo os_log("notification tapped %{public}@", log: OSLog.push, type: .info, userInfo) handleNotificationPayload(userInfo as! [String: AnyObject]) setFlutterLinkClickedVariable() } My use case is in app terminated state when push notification is tapped, get the link from payload and navigate to corresponding screen based on the link. This is working when there is only one push notification. When there are multiple push notifications with different links in the payload, only the first notification I tap works. Rest of the notifications just launches the app and does not navigate because the link is not set. I am getting the link from the payload and invoking flutter code which sets the link in the user defaults (shared preferences) and when the app launches in the home screen it checks for this variable and navigates accordingly. func handleNotificationPayload(_ payload: [String: AnyObject]) { if let link = payload["link"] as? String { setFlutterLinkVariable(link) } } override func application(_ application: UIApplication, didReceiveRemoteNotification userInfo: [AnyHashable : Any], fetchCompletionHandler completionHandler: @escaping (UIBackgroundFetchResult) -> Void) { os_log("app did receive remote notification %{public}@", log: OSLog.push, type: .info, userInfo) handleNotificationPayload(userInfo as! [String : AnyObject]) completionHandler(.newData) } Currently when there is only one push notification it works because the link is set from the above method. The click delegate is not calling. I did set the delegate in application(:didFinishLaunchingWithOptions). UNUserNotificationCenter.current().delegate = self application.registerForRemoteNotifications() How to solve this issue? Thanks.

Crash in Swift 6 when using UNUserNotification
After porting code to Swift 6 (Xcode 16.4), I get a consistent crash (on simulator) when using UNUserNotificationServiceConnection It seems (searching on the web) that others have met the same issue. Is it a known Swift6 bug ? Or am I misusing UNUserNotification ? I do not have the crash when compiling on Xcode 26 ß5, which hints at an issue in Xcode 16.4. Crash log: Thread 10 Queue : com.apple.usernotifications.UNUserNotificationServiceConnection.call-out (serial) As far as I can tell, it seems error is when calling nonisolated func userNotificationCenter(_ center: UNUserNotificationCenter, willPresent notification: UNNotification, withCompletionHandler completionHandler: @escaping (UNNotificationPresentationOptions) -> Void) I had to declare non isolated to solve a compiler error. Main actor-isolated instance method 'userNotificationCenter(_:didReceive:withCompletionHandler:)' cannot be used to satisfy nonisolated requirement from protocol 'UNUserNotificationCenterDelegate' I was advised to: Add 'nonisolated' to 'userNotificationCenter(_:didReceive:withCompletionHandler:)' to make this instance method not isolated to the actor I filed a bug report: Aug 10, 2025 at 2:43 PM – FB19519575

Questions for AlarmKit
We are so interested in AlarmKit which is presented at WWDC25. While we planning our app using AlarmKit, We had a few questions come to mind and were hoping you could provide some clarity. Please excuse the rather long list of questions, as we don't currently have a device available to test these features ourselves. System Actions Related Is there a limit to the number of alarms that can be scheduled using AlarmKit? Are alarms scheduled with AlarmKit persistent across device reboots? When an alarm is dismissed (either by swiping or pressing the power button), can our app detect this action and execute code in response? Can we control the behavior of the physical Lock Screen buttons when an AlarmKit alarm is active, for instance, to trigger a snooze action? Does AlarmKit function correctly during Do Not Disturb or Low Power Mode? What is the expected behavior when an alarm from our app (using AlarmKit) overlaps with an alarm from another app that also uses AlarmKit? Which one is going to get its priority? Thank you for your help. Sincerely

Critical Messages Allow messages to
I am creating an app that uses critical messages, I have been granted this entitlement and I am adding the certificate and in the info.plist. In the app I request authorization to send messages to specific numbers. When I try the app in production from Xcode this works fine and I can send the critical messages. However, when I am using the app in the test flight the authorization does not seem to be remembered on the background. Moreover, I go to security/privacy settings and I grant permission to the selected number (I see that it only shows one number even when I have to granted, its like it removes the previous one) however when I exit the setting page the permission is reset (and therefore denied), I think this is a bug. Can you look into that. Both this removing granted permission (HIGH PRIORITY, this message can only be sent in the background, therefore the user can not grant it and why the maximum telephone number to be granted to send messages is reset also to a single one LOWER PRIORITY). Thanks

AlarmKit FAQ
Here are some questions we received and answers: Q1: Is there a limit to the number of alarms that can be scheduled using AlarmKit? There is no set number as a limit, but this does not mean you can schedule a limitless number of alarms. Depending on device state, available resources, etc., the device may impose a limit, and restrict an app trying to schedule too many alarms simultaneously. When you hit a limit and not able to schedule more alarms, you will receive the maximumLimitReached error. Q2: Will the scheduled alarms persist after system or app events that may terminate an app, for example, a reboot, force quit, or app crash? Yes, all alarms are expected to persist regardless of app or device state changes, once they are successfully scheduled. Q3: Will alarms work if scheduled by an app that is hidden, or requires a passcode or Touch ID/Face ID to launch? Hidden or passcode required apps do not work with AlarmKit. Currently, any scheduled alarms by such apps will silently fail. Q4: When an alarm is dismissed (either by swiping or pressing the power button), can an app detect this action and execute code in response? What about force closed apps? When an alarm is dismissed, the stopIntent set in the AlarmConfiguration is called. Any code in the perform method of this AppIntent would execute. Q5: Is there a focus mode that AlarmKit cannot break through? No. AlarmKit alarms can break through all focus modes. Q6: What is the expected behavior when alarms from multiple apps overlap? Which one gets priority? Which alarm would get activated when multiple alarms are scheduled for the same time is non-deterministic. There is no way to guarantee which app or which alarm will "win". Q7: What do pressing the physical buttons do when an AlarmKit alarm is active? Any physical button that causes a reaction from AlarmKit will stop the currently alerting alarm. Q8: If there are multiple alarms active at one time, which ones do physical buttons interact with? Pressing a physical button will dismiss all currently alerting alarms Argun Tekant /  DTS Engineer / Core Technologies Change History: 2025-08-15: First posted
