CoreML GPU NaN bug with fused QKV attention on macOS Tahoe
Problem: CoreML produces NaN on GPU (works fine on CPU) when running transformer attention with fused QKV projection on macOS 26.2. Root cause: The common::fuse_transpose_matmul optimization pass triggers a Metal kernel bug when sliced tensors feed into matmul(transpose_y=True). recent JAX versions fail on Metal
Hi, I'm not sure whether this is the appropriate forum for this topic. I just followed a link from the JAX Metal plugin page https://developer.apple.com/metal/jax/ I'm writing a Python app with JAX, and recent JAX versions fail on Metal. E.g. v0.8.2 I have to downgrade JAX pretty hard to make it work: pip install jax==0.4.35 jaxlib==0.4.35 jax-metal==0.1.1 Can we get an updated release of jax-metal that would fix this issue? How to create updatable models using Create ML app
I've built a model using Create ML, but I can't make it, for the love of God, updatable. I can't find any checkbox or anything related. It's an Activity Classifier, if it matters. I want to continue training it on-device using MLUpdateTask, but the model, as exported from Create ML, fails with error: Domain=com.apple.CoreML Code=6 "Failed to unarchive update parameters. ANE Error with Statefu Model: "Unable to compute prediction" when State Tensor width is not 32-aligned
Hi everyone, I believe I’ve encountered a potential bug or a hardware alignment limitation in the Core ML Framework / ANE Runtime specifically affecting the new Stateful API (introduced in iOS 18/macOS 15). The Issue: A Stateful mlprogram fails to run on the Apple Neural Engine (ANE) if the state tensor dimensions (specifically the width) are not a multiple of 32. The model works perfectly on CPU and GPU, but fails on ANE both during runtime and when generating a Performance Report in Xcode. Error Message in Xcode UI: "There was an error creating the performance report Unable to compute the prediction using ML Program. It can be an invalid input data or broken/unsupported model." Observations: Case A (Fails): State shape = (1, 3, 480, 270). Prediction fails on ANE. Case B (Success): State shape = (1, 3, 480, 256). Prediction succeeds on ANE. This suggests an internal memory alignment or tiling issue within the ANE driver when handling Stateful buffers that don't meet the 32-pixel/element alignment. SoundAnalysis built-in classifier fails in background (SNErrorCode.operationFailed)
I’m seeing consistent failures using SoundAnalysis live classification when my app moves to the background. Setup iOS 17.x AVAudioEngine mic capture SNAudioStreamAnalyzer SNClassifySoundRequest(classifierIdentifier: .version1) UIBackgroundModes = audio AVAudioSession .record / .playAndRecord, active Audio capture + level metering continue working in background (mic indicator stays on) Issue As soon as the app enters background / screen locks: SoundAnalysis starts failing every second with domain:com.apple.SoundAnalysis, code:2(SNErrorCode.operationFailed) Audio capture itself continues normally When the app returns to foreground, classification immediately resumes without restarting the engine/analyzer Question Is live background sound classification with the built-in SoundAnalysis classifier officially unsupported or known to fail in background? If so, is a custom Core ML model the only supported approach for background detection? Or is there a required configuration I’m missing to keep SNClassifySoundRequest(.version1) running in background? Thanks for any clarification.

CreateML Training Object Detection Not using MPS
Hi everyone Im currently developing an object detection model that shall identify up to seven classes in an image. While im usually doing development with basic python and the ultralytics library, i thought i would like to give CreateML a shot. The experience is actually very nice, except for the fact that the model seem not to be using any ANE or GPU (MPS) for accelerated training. On https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/create-ml/ it states: "On-device training Train models blazingly fast right on your Mac while taking advantage of CPU and GPU." Am I doing something wrong? Im running the training on Apple M1 Pro 16GB MacOS 26.1 (Tahoe) Xcode 26.1 (Build version 17B55) It would be super nice to get some feedback or instructions. After a few attempts I end up at the same spot as categorized here by ChatGPT - I get why it feels that way, Rob — honestly, you’ve walked right into the worst possible moment in Apple’s Core ML toolchain evolution. What you’re running into isn’t your fault; Apple really did rip out the ONNX front-end without offering a clean replacement yet. So every tutorial, every script, and even coremltools itself contradicts what’s actually possible right now. Let’s be brutally clear about the state of things (late 2025): Goal Supported by Apple today Practical workaround Convert ONNX → Core ML using coremltools 9 No. The ONNX importer was removed. Use the legacy coremltools 6.x + onnx-coreml stack in a separate Python 3.9/3.10 env. Convert PyTorch → Core ML directly Yes, but only for simple or traced models. T5 still fails because of dynamic control flow. None reliable without rewriting the model. Run ONNX models directly on iOS Partially (via MLC LLM / Metal Performance Shaders). Works, but that’s an entirely different runtime. So: you’re not crazy, and this isn’t wasted effort—you’ve actually proven that your model exports cleanly and that the only missing piece is Apple’s converter. The ONNX file you built is solid. You just need something that can translate it to Core ML. If your goal is simply “get it running on-device”, you still have two viable moves that aren’t rabbit holes: 1. Use MLC LLM / Metal runtime Skip Core ML altogether. Apple’s mlc-llm (and the “MLCChat” pipeline) can execute your ONNX or quantized model directly on the GPU. You keep full fidelity and avoid all these broken converters. 2. Use the legacy Core ML 6.x toolchain in a sandboxed Python 3.10 VM It actually works. You don’t have to downgrade your whole system—just run that specific environment once to emit the .mlpackage, then never touch it again. Nothing else will silently fix itself until Apple re-adds ONNX ingestion in Core ML 10 or a new converter.

Is there an API to check if a Core ML compiled model is already cached?
Hello Apple Developer Community, I'm investigating Core ML model loading behavior and noticed that even when the compiled model path remains unchanged after an APP update, the first run still triggers an "uncached load" process. This seems to impact user experience with unnecessary delays. Question: Does Core ML provide any public API to check whether a compiled model (from a specific .mlmodelc path) is already cached in the system? If such API exists, we'd like to use it for pre-loading decision logic - only perform background pre-load when the model isn't cached. Building Real-Time Voice Input on macOS 26 with SpeechAnalyzer + ScreenCaptureKit
We built an open-source macOS menu bar app that turns speech into text and pastes it into the active app — using SpeechAnalyzer for on-device transcription, ScreenCaptureKit + Vision for screen-aware context, and FluidAudio for speaker diarization in meeting mode. Here's what we learned shipping it on macOS 26. GitHub: github.com/Marvinngg/ambient-voice Architecture The app has two modes: hotkey dictation (press to talk, release to inject) and meeting recording (continuous transcription with a floating panel). Dictation Mode Audio capture uses AVCaptureSession (more on why below). The captured audio feeds into SpeechAnalyzer via an AsyncStream: let transcriber = SpeechTranscriber( locale: locale, transcriptionOptions: [], reportingOptions: [.volatileResults, .alternativeTranscriptions], attributeOptions: [.audioTimeRange, .transcriptionConfidence] ) let analyzer = SpeechAnalyzer(modules: [transcriber]) let (inputSequence, inputBuilder) = AsyncStream.makeStream() try await analyzer.start(inputSequence: inputSequence) While recording, we capture a screenshot of the focused window using ScreenCaptureKit, run Vision OCR (VNRecognizeTextRequest), extract keywords, and inject them into SpeechAnalyzer as contextual bias: let context = AnalysisContext() context.contextualStrings[.general] = ocrKeywords try await analyzer.setContext(context) This improves accuracy for technical terms and proper nouns visible on screen. If your screen shows "SpeechAnalyzer", saying it out loud is more likely to be transcribed correctly. After transcription, an optional L2 step sends the text through a local LLM (ollama) for spoken-to-written cleanup, then CGEvent simulates Cmd+V to paste into the active app. Meeting Mode Meeting mode forks the same audio stream to two consumers: SpeechAnalyzer — real-time streaming transcription, displayed in a floating NSPanel FluidAudio buffer — accumulates 16kHz Float32 mono samples for batch speaker diarization after recording stops When the user ends the meeting, FluidAudio's performCompleteDiarization() runs on the accumulated audio. We align transcription segments with speaker segments using audioTimeRange overlap matching — each transcription segment gets assigned the speaker ID with the most time overlap. Results export to Markdown. Pitfalls We Hit on macOS 26 1. AVAudioEngine installTap doesn't fire with Bluetooth devices We started with AVAudioEngine.inputNode.installTap() for audio capture. It worked fine with built-in mics but the tap callback never fired with Bluetooth devices (tested with vivo TWS 4 Hi-Fi). Fix: switched to AVCaptureSession. The delegate callback captureOutput(_:didOutput:from:) fires reliably regardless of audio device. The tradeoff is you get CMSampleBuffer instead of AVAudioPCMBuffer, so you need a conversion step. 2. NSEvent addGlobalMonitorForEvents crashes Our global hotkey listener used NSEvent.addGlobalMonitorForEvents. On macOS 26, this crashes with a Bus error inside GlobalObserverHandler — appears to be a Swift actor runtime issue. Fix: switched to CGEventTap. Works reliably, but the callback runs on a CFRunLoop context, which Swift doesn't recognize as MainActor. 3. CGEventTap callbacks aren't on MainActor If your CGEventTap callback touches any @MainActor state, you'll get concurrency violations. The callback runs on whatever thread owns the CFRunLoop. Fix: bridge with DispatchQueue.main.async {} inside the tap callback before touching any MainActor state. 4. CGPreflightScreenCaptureAccess doesn't request permission We used CGPreflightScreenCaptureAccess() as a guard before calling ScreenCaptureKit. If it returned false, we'd bail out. The problem: this function only checks — it never triggers macOS to add your app to the Screen Recording permission list. Chicken-and-egg: you can't get permission because you never ask for it. Fix: call CGRequestScreenCaptureAccess() at app startup. This adds your app to System Settings → Screen Recording. Then let ScreenCaptureKit calls proceed without the preflight guard — SCShareableContent will also trigger the permission prompt on first use. 5. Ad-hoc signing breaks TCC permissions on every rebuild During development, codesign --sign - (ad-hoc) generates a different code directory hash on every build. macOS TCC tracks permissions by this hash, so every rebuild = new app identity = all permissions reset. Fix: sign with a stable certificate. If you have an Apple Development certificate, use that. The TeamIdentifier stays constant across rebuilds, so TCC permissions persist. We also discovered that launching via open WE.app (LaunchServices) instead of directly executing the binary is required — otherwise macOS attributes TCC permissions to Terminal, not your app. Benchmarks We ran end-to-end benchmarks on public datasets (Mac Mini M4 16GB, macOS 26): Transcription (SpeechAnalyzer, AliMeeting Chinese): • Near-field CER 34% (excluding outliers ~25%) • Far-field CER 40% (single channel, no beamforming, >30% overlap) • Processing speed 74-89x real-time Speaker diarization (FluidAudio offline): • AMI English 16 meetings: avg DER 23.2% (collar=0.25s, ignoreOverlap=True) • AliMeeting Chinese 8 meetings: DER 48.5% (including overlap regions) • Memory: RSS ~500MB, peak 730-930MB Full evaluation methodology, scripts, and raw results are in the repo. ANE Performance for on-device Foundation model
I'm running MacOs 26 Beta 5. I noticed that I can no longer achieve 100% usage on the ANE as I could before with Apple Foundations on-device model. Has Apple activated some kind of throttling or power limiting of the ANE? I cannot get above 3w or 40% usage now since upgrading. I'm on the high power energy mode. I there an API rate limit being applied? I kave a M4 Pro mini with 64 GB of memory.

SpeechTranscriber time indexes - detect pauses?
I'm experimenting with the new SpeechTranscriber in macOS/iOS 26, transcribing speech from a prerecorded mp4 file. Speed and quality are amazing! I've told the transcriber to include time indexes. Each run is always exactly one word, which can be very useful. When I look at the indexes the end of one run is always identical to the start of the next run, even if there's a pause. I'd like to identify pauses, perhaps to generate something like phrases for subtitling. With each run of text going into the next I can't do this, other than using punctuation - which might be rather rough. Any suggestions on detecting pauses, or getting that kind of metadata from the transcriber? Is it possible to pass the streaming output of Foundation Models down a function chain
I am writing a custom package wrapping Foundation Models which provides a chain-of-thought with intermittent self-evaluation among other things. At first I was designing this package with the command line in mind, but after seeing how well it augments the models and makes them more intelligent I wanted to try and build a SwiftUI wrapper around the package. When I started I was using synchronous generation rather than streaming, but to give the best user experience (as I've seen in the WWDC sessions) it is necessary to provide constant feedback to the user that something is happening. I have created a super simplified example of my setup so it's easier to understand. I want the users of the orchestrator to receive partially generated reasoning items as they are being generated by the generator. Later, when they finish, if the evaluation passes, the item is kept, but if it fails, the reasoning item should be removed from the stream before a new one is generated. So in-flight reasoning items should be outputted aggresively. I really am having trouble figuring this out so if someone with more knowledge about asynchronous stuff in Swift, or- even better- someone who has worked on the Foundation Models framework could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

“Accelerate Transformer Training on Apple Devices from Months to Hours!”
I am excited to share that I have developed a Metal kernel for Flash Attention that eliminates race conditions and fully leverages Apple Silicon’s shared memory and registers. This kernel can dramatically accelerate training of transformer-based models. Early benchmarks suggest that models which previously required months to train could see reductions to just a few hours on Apple hardware, while maintaining numerical stability and accuracy. I plan to make the code publicly available to enable the broader community to benefit. I would be happy to keep you updated on the latest developments and improvements as I continue testing and optimizing the kernel. I believe this work could provide valuable insights for Apple’s machine learning research and products.

Hardware Support for Low Precision Data Types?
Hi all, I'm trying to find out if/when we can expect mxfp8/mxfp4 support on Apple Silicon. I've noticed that mlx now has casting data types, but all computation is still done in bf16. Would be great to reduce power consumption with support for these lower precision data types since edge inference is already typically done at a lower precision! Thanks in advance.

Vision Framework VNTrackObjectRequest: Minimum Valid Bounding Box Size Causing Internal Error (Code=9)
I'm developing a tennis ball tracking feature using Vision Framework in Swift, specifically utilizing VNDetectedObjectObservation and VNTrackObjectRequest. Occasionally (but not always), I receive the following runtime error: Failed to perform SequenceRequest: Error Domain=com.apple.Vision Code=9 "Internal error: unexpected tracked object bounding box size" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Internal error: unexpected tracked object bounding box size} From my investigation, I suspect the issue arises when the bounding box from the initial observation (VNDetectedObjectObservation) is too small. However, Apple's documentation doesn't clearly define the minimum bounding box size that's considered valid by VNTrackObjectRequest. Could someone clarify: What is the minimum acceptable bounding box width and height (normalized) that Vision Framework's VNTrackObjectRequest expects? Is there any recommended practice or official guidance for bounding box size validation before creating a tracking request? How to test for VisualIntelligence available on device?
I'm adding Visual Intelligence support to my app, and now want to add a Tip using TipKit to guide users to this feature from within my app. I want to add a Rule to my Tip which will only show this Tip on devices where Visual Intelligence is supported (ex. not iPhone 14 Pro Max). What is the best way for me to determine availability to set this TipKit rule? CoreML GPU NaN bug with fused QKV attention on macOS Tahoe
Problem: CoreML produces NaN on GPU (works fine on CPU) when running transformer attention with fused QKV projection on macOS 26.2. Root cause: The common::fuse_transpose_matmul optimization pass triggers a Metal kernel bug when sliced tensors feed into matmul(transpose_y=True). recent JAX versions fail on Metal

I've built a model using Create ML, but I can't make it, for the love of God, updatable. I can't find any checkbox or anything related. It's an Activity Classifier, if it matters. ANE Error with Statefu Model: "Unable to compute prediction" when State Tensor width is not 32-aligned
Hi everyone, I believe I’ve encountered a potential bug or a hardware alignment limitation in the Core ML Framework / ANE Runtime specifically affecting the new Stateful API (introduced in iOS 18/macOS 15). The Issue: A Stateful mlprogram fails to run on the Apple Neural Engine (ANE) if the state tensor dimensions (specifically the width) are not a multiple of 32. The model works perfectly on CPU and GPU, but fails on ANE both during runtime and when generating a Performance Report in Xcode. Error Message in Xcode UI: "There was an error creating the performance report Unable to compute the prediction using ML Program. It can be an invalid input data or broken/unsupported model." Observations: Case A (Fails): State shape = (1, 3, 480, 270). Prediction fails on ANE. Case B (Success): State shape = (1, 3, 480, 256). Prediction succeeds on ANE. This suggests an internal memory alignment or tiling issue within the ANE driver when handling Stateful buffers that don't meet the 32-pixel/element alignment. SoundAnalysis built-in classifier fails in background (SNErrorCode.operationFailed)
I’m seeing consistent failures using SoundAnalysis live classification when my app moves to the background. Setup iOS 17.x AVAudioEngine mic capture SNAudioStreamAnalyzer SNClassifySoundRequest(classifierIdentifier: .version1) UIBackgroundModes = audio AVAudioSession .record / .playAndRecord, active Audio capture + level metering continue working in background (mic indicator stays on) Issue As soon as the app enters background / screen locks: SoundAnalysis starts failing every second with domain:com.apple.SoundAnalysis, code:2(SNErrorCode.operationFailed) Audio capture itself continues normally When the app returns to foreground, classification immediately resumes without restarting the engine/analyzer Question Is live background sound classification with the built-in SoundAnalysis classifier officially unsupported or known to fail in background? If so, is a custom Core ML model the only supported approach for background detection? CreateML Training Object Detection Not using MPS
Hi everyone Im currently developing an object detection model that shall identify up to seven classes in an image. While im usually doing development with basic python and the ultralytics library, i thought i would like to give CreateML a shot. The experience is actually very nice, except for the fact that the model seem not to be using any ANE or GPU (MPS) for accelerated training. On https://developer.apple.com/machine-learning/create-ml/ it states: "On-device training Train models blazingly fast right on your Mac while taking advantage of CPU and GPU." Am I doing something wrong? Im running the training on Apple M1 Pro 16GB MacOS 26.1 (Tahoe) Xcode 26.1 (Build version 17B55) It would be super nice to get some feedback or instructions. I have tried to search latest papers but they all have very complex structure, and I don't think I can convert them to mlmodel. So can anyone give me any recommandation for such models? After a few attempts I end up at the same spot as categorized here by ChatGPT - I get why it feels that way, Rob — honestly, you’ve walked right into the worst possible moment in Apple’s Core ML toolchain evolution. What you’re running into isn’t your fault; Apple really did rip out the ONNX front-end without offering a clean replacement yet. So every tutorial, every script, and even coremltools itself contradicts what’s actually possible right now. Let’s be brutally clear about the state of things (late 2025): Goal Supported by Apple today Practical workaround Convert ONNX → Core ML using coremltools 9 No. The ONNX importer was removed. Use the legacy coremltools 6.x + onnx-coreml stack in a separate Python 3.9/3.10 env. Convert PyTorch → Core ML directly Yes, but only for simple or traced models. T5 still fails because of dynamic control flow. None reliable without rewriting the model. Run ONNX models directly on iOS Partially (via MLC LLM / Metal Performance Shaders). Works, but that’s an entirely different runtime. So: you’re not crazy, and this isn’t wasted effort—you’ve actually proven that your model exports cleanly and that the only missing piece is Apple’s converter. The ONNX file you built is solid. You just need something that can translate it to Core ML. If your goal is simply “get it running on-device”, you still have two viable moves that aren’t rabbit holes: 1. Use MLC LLM / Metal runtime Skip Core ML altogether. Apple’s mlc-llm (and the “MLCChat” pipeline) can execute your ONNX or quantized model directly on the GPU. You keep full fidelity and avoid all these broken converters. 2. Use the legacy Core ML 6.x toolchain in a sandboxed Python 3.10 VM It actually works. You don’t have to downgrade your whole system—just run that specific environment once to emit the .mlpackage, then never touch it again. Is there an API to check if a Core ML compiled model is already cached?
Hello Apple Developer Community, I'm investigating Core ML model loading behavior and noticed that even when the compiled model path remains unchanged after an APP update, the first run still triggers an "uncached load" process. This seems to impact user experience with unnecessary delays. Building Real-Time Voice Input on macOS 26 with SpeechAnalyzer + ScreenCaptureKit
We built an open-source macOS menu bar app that turns speech into text and pastes it into the active app — using SpeechAnalyzer for on-device transcription, ScreenCaptureKit + Vision for screen-aware context, and FluidAudio for speaker diarization in meeting mode. Here's what we learned shipping it on macOS 26. GitHub: github.com/Marvinngg/ambient-voice Architecture The app has two modes: hotkey dictation (press to talk, release to inject) and meeting recording (continuous transcription with a floating panel). Dictation Mode Audio capture uses AVCaptureSession (more on why below). The captured audio feeds into SpeechAnalyzer via an AsyncStream: let transcriber = SpeechTranscriber( locale: locale, transcriptionOptions: [], reportingOptions: [.volatileResults, .alternativeTranscriptions], attributeOptions: [.audioTimeRange, .transcriptionConfidence] ) let analyzer = SpeechAnalyzer(modules: [transcriber]) let (inputSequence, inputBuilder) = AsyncStream.makeStream() try await analyzer.start(inputSequence: inputSequence) While recording, we capture a screenshot of the focused window using ScreenCaptureKit, run Vision OCR (VNRecognizeTextRequest), extract keywords, and inject them into SpeechAnalyzer as contextual bias: let context = AnalysisContext() context.contextualStrings[.general] = ocrKeywords try await analyzer.setContext(context) This improves accuracy for technical terms and proper nouns visible on screen. If your screen shows "SpeechAnalyzer", saying it out loud is more likely to be transcribed correctly. After transcription, an optional L2 step sends the text through a local LLM (ollama) for spoken-to-written cleanup, then CGEvent simulates Cmd+V to paste into the active app. Meeting Mode Meeting mode forks the same audio stream to two consumers: SpeechAnalyzer — real-time streaming transcription, displayed in a floating NSPanel FluidAudio buffer — accumulates 16kHz Float32 mono samples for batch speaker diarization after recording stops When the user ends the meeting, FluidAudio's performCompleteDiarization() runs on the accumulated audio. We align transcription segments with speaker segments using audioTimeRange overlap matching — each transcription segment gets assigned the speaker ID with the most time overlap. Results export to Markdown. Pitfalls We Hit on macOS 26 1. AVAudioEngine installTap doesn't fire with Bluetooth devices We started with AVAudioEngine.inputNode.installTap() for audio capture. It worked fine with built-in mics but the tap callback never fired with Bluetooth devices (tested with vivo TWS 4 Hi-Fi). Fix: switched to AVCaptureSession. The delegate callback captureOutput(_:didOutput:from:) fires reliably regardless of audio device. The tradeoff is you get CMSampleBuffer instead of AVAudioPCMBuffer, so you need a conversion step. 2. NSEvent addGlobalMonitorForEvents crashes Our global hotkey listener used NSEvent.addGlobalMonitorForEvents. On macOS 26, this crashes with a Bus error inside GlobalObserverHandler — appears to be a Swift actor runtime issue. Fix: switched to CGEventTap. Works reliably, but the callback runs on a CFRunLoop context, which Swift doesn't recognize as MainActor. 3. CGEventTap callbacks aren't on MainActor If your CGEventTap callback touches any @MainActor state, you'll get concurrency violations. The callback runs on whatever thread owns the CFRunLoop. Fix: bridge with DispatchQueue.main.async {} inside the tap callback before touching any MainActor state. 4. CGPreflightScreenCaptureAccess doesn't request permission We used CGPreflightScreenCaptureAccess() as a guard before calling ScreenCaptureKit. If it returned false, we'd bail out. The problem: this function only checks — it never triggers macOS to add your app to the Screen Recording permission list. Chicken-and-egg: you can't get permission because you never ask for it. Fix: call CGRequestScreenCaptureAccess() at app startup. This adds your app to System Settings → Screen Recording. Then let ScreenCaptureKit calls proceed without the preflight guard — SCShareableContent will also trigger the permission prompt on first use. 5. Ad-hoc signing breaks TCC permissions on every rebuild During development, codesign --sign - (ad-hoc) generates a different code directory hash on every build. macOS TCC tracks permissions by this hash, so every rebuild = new app identity = all permissions reset. Fix: sign with a stable certificate. If you have an Apple Development certificate, use that. The TeamIdentifier stays constant across rebuilds, so TCC permissions persist. We also discovered that launching via open WE.app (LaunchServices) instead of directly executing the binary is required — otherwise macOS attributes TCC permissions to Terminal, not your app. Benchmarks We ran end-to-end benchmarks on public datasets (Mac Mini M4 16GB, macOS 26): Transcription (SpeechAnalyzer, AliMeeting Chinese): • Near-field CER 34% (excluding outliers ~25%) • Far-field CER 40% (single channel, no beamforming, >30% overlap) • Processing speed 74-89x real-time Speaker diarization (FluidAudio offline): • AMI English 16 meetings: avg DER 23.2% (collar=0.25s, ignoreOverlap=True) • AliMeeting Chinese 8 meetings: DER 48.5% (including overlap regions) • Memory: RSS ~500MB, peak 730-930MB Full evaluation methodology, scripts, and raw results are in the repo. ANE Performance for on-device Foundation model
I'm running MacOs 26 Beta 5. I noticed that I can no longer achieve 100% usage on the ANE as I could before with Apple Foundations on-device model. Has Apple activated some kind of throttling or power limiting of the ANE? I cannot get above 3w or 40% usage now since upgrading. I'm on the high power energy mode. I there an API rate limit being applied? I kave a M4 Pro mini with 64 GB of memory.

SpeechTranscriber time indexes - detect pauses?
I'm experimenting with the new SpeechTranscriber in macOS/iOS 26, transcribing speech from a prerecorded mp4 file. Speed and quality are amazing! I've told the transcriber to include time indexes. Each run is always exactly one word, which can be very useful. When I look at the indexes the end of one run is always identical to the start of the next run, even if there's a pause. I'd like to identify pauses, perhaps to generate something like phrases for subtitling. With each run of text going into the next I can't do this, other than using punctuation - which might be rather rough. Any suggestions on detecting pauses, or getting that kind of metadata from the transcriber? Is it possible to pass the streaming output of Foundation Models down a function chain
I am writing a custom package wrapping Foundation Models which provides a chain-of-thought with intermittent self-evaluation among other things. At first I was designing this package with the command line in mind, but after seeing how well it augments the models and makes them more intelligent I wanted to try and build a SwiftUI wrapper around the package. When I started I was using synchronous generation rather than streaming, but to give the best user experience (as I've seen in the WWDC sessions) it is necessary to provide constant feedback to the user that something is happening. I have created a super simplified example of my setup so it's easier to understand. Then there is the orchestrator, which I can't figure out. It receives the streamed ConversationReasoningItems from the Generator and is responsible for streaming those to SwiftUI later and also for evaluating each reasoning item after it is complete to see if it needs to be regenerated (to keep the model on-track). I want the users of the orchestrator to receive partially generated reasoning items as they are being generated by the generator. Later, when they finish, if the evaluation passes, the item is kept, but if it fails, the reasoning item should be removed from the stream before a new one is generated. So in-flight reasoning items should be outputted aggresively. I really am having trouble figuring this out so if someone with more knowledge about asynchronous stuff in Swift, or- even better- someone who has worked on the Foundation Models framework could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

“Accelerate Transformer Training on Apple Devices from Months to Hours!”
I am excited to share that I have developed a Metal kernel for Flash Attention that eliminates race conditions and fully leverages Apple Silicon’s shared memory and registers. This kernel can dramatically accelerate training of transformer-based models. Early benchmarks suggest that models which previously required months to train could see reductions to just a few hours on Apple hardware, while maintaining numerical stability and accuracy. I plan to make the code publicly available to enable the broader community to benefit. I would be happy to keep you updated on the latest developments and improvements as I continue testing and optimizing the kernel. I believe this work could provide valuable insights for Apple’s machine learning research and products.

Hardware Support for Low Precision Data Types?
Hi all, I'm trying to find out if/when we can expect mxfp8/mxfp4 support on Apple Silicon. I've noticed that mlx now has casting data types, but all computation is still done in bf16. Would be great to reduce power consumption with support for these lower precision data types since edge inference is already typically done at a lower precision! Thanks in advance.

Vision Framework VNTrackObjectRequest: Minimum Valid Bounding Box Size Causing Internal Error (Code=9)
I'm developing a tennis ball tracking feature using Vision Framework in Swift, specifically utilizing VNDetectedObjectObservation and VNTrackObjectRequest. Occasionally (but not always), I receive the following runtime error: Failed to perform SequenceRequest: Error Domain=com.apple.Vision Code=9 "Internal error: unexpected tracked object bounding box size" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Internal error: unexpected tracked object bounding box size} From my investigation, I suspect the issue arises when the bounding box from the initial observation (VNDetectedObjectObservation) is too small. However, Apple's documentation doesn't clearly define the minimum bounding box size that's considered valid by VNTrackObjectRequest. Could someone clarify: What is the minimum acceptable bounding box width and height (normalized) that Vision Framework's VNTrackObjectRequest expects? Is there any recommended practice or official guidance for bounding box size validation before creating a tracking request? This information would be extremely helpful to reliably avoid this internal error. Thank you!

How to test for VisualIntelligence available on device?
I'm adding Visual Intelligence support to my app, and now want to add a Tip using TipKit to guide users to this feature from within my app. I want to add a Rule to my Tip which will only show this Tip on devices where Visual Intelligence is supported (ex. not iPhone 14 Pro Max). What is the best way for me to determine availability to set this TipKit rule?
