Does Foundation Models ever do off-device computation?
I want to use Foundation Models in a project, but I know my users will want to avoid environmentally intensive AI work in data centers. Does Foundation Models ever use Private Compute Cloud or any other kind of cloud-based AI system? I'd like to be able to assure my users that the LLM usage is relatively environmentally friendly. It would be great to be able to cite a specific Apple page explaining that Foundation Models work is always done locally. If there's any chance that work can be done in the cloud, is there a way to opt out of that?

NLTagger.requestAssets hangs indefinitely
When calling NLTagger.requestAssets with some languages, it hangs indefinitely both in the simulator and a device. This happens consistently for some languages like greek. An example call is NLTagger.requestAssets(for: .greek, tagScheme: .lemma). Other languages like french return immediately. I captured some logs from Console and found what looks like the repeated attempts to download the asset. I would expect the call to eventually terminate, either loading the asset or failing with an error.

Visual Intelligence API SemanticContentDescriptor labels are empty
I'm trying to use Apple's new Visual Intelligence API for recommending content through screenshot image search. The problem I encountered is that the SemanticContentDescriptor labels are either completely empty or super misleading, making it impossible to query for similar content on my app. Even the closest matching example was inaccurate, returning a single label ["cardigan"] for a Supreme T-Shirt. I see other apps using this API like Etsy for example, and I'm wondering if they're using the input pixel buffer to query for similar content rather than using the labels? If anyone has a similar experience or something that wasn't called out in the documentation please lmk! Thanks.

Siri 2.0 (suggests and future updates)
Hey dear developers! This post should be available for the future Siri updates and improvements but also for wishes in this forum so that everyone can share their opinion and idea please stay friendly. have fun! I had already thought about developing a demo app to demonstrate my idea for a better Siri. My change of many: Wish Update: Siri's language recognition capabilities have been significantly enhanced. Instead of manually setting the language, Siri can now automatically recognize the language you intend to use, making language switching much more efficient. Simply speak the language you want to communicate in, and Siri will automatically recognize it and respond accordingly. Whether you speak English, German, or Japanese, Siri will respond in the language you choose.

Foundation model sandbox restriction error
I'm seeing this error a lot in my console log of my iPhone 15 Pro (Apple Intelligence enabled): com.apple.modelcatalog.catalog sync: connection error during call: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 "The connection to service named com.apple.modelcatalog.catalog was invalidated: failed at lookup with error 159 - Sandbox restriction." UserInfo={NSDebugDescription=The connection to service named com.apple.modelcatalog.catalog was invalidated: failed at lookup with error 159 - Sandbox restriction.} reached max num connection attempts: 1 Are there entitlements / permissions I need to enable in Xcode that I forgot to do? Code example Here's how I'm initializing the language model session: private func setupLanguageModelSession() { if #available(iOS 26.0, *) { let instructions = """ my instructions """ do { languageModelSession = try LanguageModelSession(instructions: instructions) print("Foundation Models language model session initialized") } catch { print("Error creating language model session: \(error)") languageModelSession = nil } } else { print("Device does not support Foundation Models (requires iOS 26.0+)") languageModelSession = nil } }

Data used for MLX fine-tuning
The WWDC25: Explore large language models on Apple silicon with MLX video talks about using your own data to fine-tune a large language model. But the video doesn't explain what kind of data can be used. The video just shows the command to use and how to point to the data folder. Can I use PDFs, Word documents, Markdown files to train the model? Are there any code examples on GitHub that demonstrate how to do this?

Dynamically Create Tool Argument Type
According to the Tool documentation, the arguments to the tool are specified as a static struct type T, which is given to tool.call(argument: T) However, if the arguments are not known until runtime, is it possible to still create a Tool object with the proper parameters? Let's say a JSON-style dictionary is passed into the Tool init function to specify T, is this achievable?

Core ML Model Performance report shows prediction speed much faster than actual app runs
Hi all, I'm tuning my app prediction speed with Core ML model. I watched and tried the methods in video: Improve Core ML integration with async prediction and Optimize your Core ML usage. I also use instruments to look what's the bottleneck that my prediction speed cannot be faster. Below is the instruments result with my app. its prediction duration is 10.29ms And below is performance report shows the average speed of prediction is 5.55ms, that is about half time of my app prediction! Below is part of my instruments records. I think the prediction should be considered quite frequent. Could it be faster? How to be the same prediction speed as performance report? The prediction speed on macbook Pro M2 is nearly the same as macbook Air M1!

Model Rate Limits?
Trying the Foundation Model framework and when I try to run several sessions in a loop, I'm getting a thrown error that I'm hitting a rate limit. Are these rate limits documented? What's the best practice here? I'm trying to run the models against new content downloaded from a web service where I might get ~200 items in a given download. They're relatively small but there can be that many that want to be processed in a loop.

Unavailable error is wrong?
This is my code: witch SystemLanguageModel.default.availability { case .available: ContentView() .popover(isPresented: $showSettings) { SettingsView().presentationCompactAdaptation(.popover) } case .unavailable(.modelNotReady): ContentUnavailableView("Apple Intelligence is unavailable", systemImage: "apple.intelligence.badge.xmark", description: Text("Please come back later.")) case .unavailable(.appleIntelligenceNotEnabled): ContentUnavailableView("Apple Intelligence is unavailable", systemImage: "apple.intelligence.badge.xmark", description: Text("Please turn on Apple Intelligence.")) case .unavailable(.deviceNotEligible): ContentUnavailableView("Apple Intelligence is unavailable", systemImage: "apple.intelligence.badge.xmark", description: Text("This device is not eligible for Apple Intelligence.")) case .unavailable: ContentUnavailableView("Apple Intelligence is unavailable", systemImage: "apple.intelligence.badge.xmark") } When I switch off Apple Intelligence, I expected "Please turn on Apple Intelligence.", but instead I get "Please come back later." This seems to be wrong error?

VNDetectTextRectanglesRequest not detecting text rectangles (includes image)
Hi everyone, I'm trying to use VNDetectTextRectanglesRequest to detect text rectangles in an image. Here's my current code: guard let cgImage = image.cgImage(forProposedRect: nil, context: nil, hints: nil) else { return } let textDetectionRequest = VNDetectTextRectanglesRequest { request, error in if let error = error { print("Text detection error: \(error)") return } guard let observations = request.results as? [VNTextObservation] else { print("No text rectangles detected.") return } print("Detected \(observations.count) text rectangles.") for observation in observations { print(observation.boundingBox) } } textDetectionRequest.revision = VNDetectTextRectanglesRequestRevision1 textDetectionRequest.reportCharacterBoxes = true let handler = VNImageRequestHandler(cgImage: cgImage, orientation: .up, options: [:]) do { try handler.perform([textDetectionRequest]) } catch { print("Vision request error: \(error)") } The request completes without error, but no text rectangles are detected — the observations array is empty (count = 0). Here's a sample image I'm testing with: I expected VNTextObservation results, but I'm not getting any. Is there something I'm missing in how this API works? Or could it be a limitation of this request or revision? Thanks for any help!

Is there an API to check if a Core ML compiled model is already cached?
Hello Apple Developer Community, I'm investigating Core ML model loading behavior and noticed that even when the compiled model path remains unchanged after an APP update, the first run still triggers an "uncached load" process. This seems to impact user experience with unnecessary delays. Question: Does Core ML provide any public API to check whether a compiled model (from a specific .mlmodelc path) is already cached in the system? If such API exists, we'd like to use it for pre-loading decision logic - only perform background pre-load when the model isn't cached. Has anyone encountered similar scenarios or found official solutions? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

LanguageModelStream and collecting the final output
I have a Generable type with many elements. I am using a stream() to incrementally process the output (Generable.PartiallyGenerated?) content. Am I missing some functionality in the APIs?

Will mps support metal 4 new features for machine learning?
In WWDC25 Metal 4 released quite excited new features for machine learning optimization, but as we all know the pytorch based on metal shader performance (mps) is the one of most important tools for Mac machine learning area.but on mps introduced website we cannot see any support information for metal4.

How to Estimate Token Count Before Passing Context to Apple’s Foundation Model?
In working with Apple's foundation models, we often want to provide as much context as possible. However, since the model has a context size limit of 4096 tokens, is there a way to estimate the number of tokens beforehand?

FoundationModels tool calling doesn't get triggered
In the play ground I'm trying to bias my LanguageModel to use a tool I registered, but I don't see it actually calling the tool. I'm following the developer video on landmarks itinerary generation tutorial almost verbatim. Is this a prompt engineering thing I'm missing? Or is it possible that I'm injecting my tool wrong?

Determining which new features use AI/ML under the hood
iOS26 is supported by a wider range of devices than are able to run AI, e.g iPhone 12 runs iOS26, but does not support AI. How do we determine in code if AI is supported on a device ? How do we determine what features use AI under the hood ? Thanks, Steve.
